TTC After a Loss

pregnancy after miscarriage?

I had a miscarriage about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I took a pregnancy test shortly after I had stopped bleeding to track my hcg levels and it came back negative so I assumed my levels had gone down to near 0. Fast forward about 2 weeks later I started feeling really nauseous in the morning, my fingers were swelling, and also very tired. My boobs also started getting really heavy and I started getting cravings again. I went in to my doctor and got a blood test done and they said my hcg blood work came back negative. I read somewhere that if they do a qualitative hcg it can come back negative if you are only 3-5 weeks pregnant which I would definitely fall into considering I only had my miscarriage 3 1/2 weeks ago. Should I ask to get a quantitative blood test just to be sure or keep doing home tests every few days? I'm just nervous because I am pretty sure negligence from my previous doctor played a factor in my miscarriage so I am a bit on edge now. Any advice would be great!

Re: pregnancy after miscarriage?

  • I'm sorry for your loss. It's not unusual for the body to do lots of weird things as you recover from a MC including cravings, tender breasts, mood swings, and other typical pregnancy symptoms.

A negative HCG beta quant (the blood test your Dr uses to determine if you are pregnant) means not pregnant at this time. It can take many weeks to ovulate again after a MC. I had a 10 week cycle following my miscarriage. I recommend finding a new OB if you don't like your current one, but there's not a lot even the worst Dr can do to mess up a blood test. These are usually run by independent labs and the Dr just reports the results.

  • But I had a qualitative that's my concern. I know a quantitative one is pretty much foolproof. I had no symptoms right after my miscarriage (after bleeding stopped) but like a week ago I started getting my pregnancy symptoms back again.

Huh. I've never heard of a qualitative HCG blood test. My Dr would do urine tests in their office to confirm pregnancy. I'd ask for a quantitative blood test if you're concerned. How far along were you? Did you miscarry naturally or have a D&C? Either way I would definitely find a new Dr if you don't like your current one.
  • It was a quantitative apparently just from the results they gave me it sounded like they did a qualitative because they didn't give me a number. Mine was less than two though. With my miscarriage I felt symptoms at 3-4 weeks though. Still going to keep an eye on these symptoms. Still no period and my hcg has been low for a while. Home pregnancy test came out negative about 3 weeks ago.

  • Also I have trust issues with doctors. My old doctor told me my progesterone was low a week after they got the results back. I still question whether or not if I had been on progesterone earlier if the baby would have survived.

  • @allie92089 unfortunately low progesterone is usually a sign of a bad egg so if your progesterone Levels are low, there's not much to be done. If you had known luteal phase defect, progesterone supplementation could help. I was on progesterone supplementation after a low reading for my last pregnancy. It was a bad decision- all it did was continue a pregnancy 13 weeks that would have ended at 7 or 8 weeks.
