I came across a few apps but is anyone actually writing theirs down? Seems like a lot of work.
Also I have no idea how kick counting really works, can't tell hiccups from movements so tracking wouldn't be accurate anyways. Wiki how-to doesn't help, and who wrote those wiki guides - first thing wiki lists as cause for inactivity is your baby died? Geez thx wiki
It's very important to keep track if your babys movements have declined I'd at least pick your babys most active time during the day and count 10 kicks with in an hour.
I'm at 28 weeks and my doc hasn't told me to start. My 28 week appointment is tomorrow so maybe she'll mention it then. I try to stay congnizant of making sure I feel movement throughout the day but I don't actually count or write anything down.

This. My doctor said I should check after eating for ten kicks in one hour twice a day. But baby is always most active when I first wake up and before bed so that's when I'm "counting".
My doctor hasn't mentioned it yet (my last appt was 26 weeks), but I plan to ask her about it this week (29 week appt). I started trying to count with an app just to see how hard it was. This kid has a dance party after dinner every night, so I got to 10 in under 10 minutes. I have no idea if I was counting the right way though.
No - she's moving regularly so that's what I'm focusing on. Should she stop moving, then I'd pay attention and count, but as far as keeping an ongoing log, no.
I had my 28 week appointment Monday and it was the first time a Dr had asked about movement. I said I feel it several times per day and can feel when he is most active but that is about it. She said that sounded great and as long as I feel him moving around a few times per day that is good. Didn't tell me to count kicks or anything that I've read online. I also laugh because when she was checking his HR she felt him move like 3 times and I didn't feel him at all so that tells me he's moving even when I can't feel it
My doctor told me to start them at 28 weeks. She said at roughly the same time everyday, I should sit/lay down and count movements and make sure I get 10 in an hour. She said to choose a time that I know baby is active. It's honestly been more stressful than I expected. I started doing them at night and one night it took 1.5 hours and even though I felt baby moving all day, I was then worried and drank 3 glasses of ice water trying to get baby to move more and then was up all night worrying and going to the bathroom. Does the baby actually keep a sleep/active schedule that is the same day to day? I've started counting kicks when I feel the baby moving, but not at the same time every day, and that has been a lot better and less stressful. Sometimes I use an app, sometimes I just sit down and count 10 quickly and don't record it.

To the bolded my doctor said that the baby often creates a schedule. Because I mentioned how I first felt movement when I'd lay down at night but now I dont feel it as often then. She said the baby probably has adjusted his schedule and that is his sleep time too and as long as I feel it at other times during the day (I do) then it is fine.
I have my appointment next week, but at prior appointments I just get asked if there is consistent movement. There is of course, that I notice. I feel him around 11-12pm (lunch time) around 6-7 (dinner time) before bed, anywhere between 10:30 on, and he graces me with movement at about 3-4am. I realize these are the times when I am less active. There are inconsistencies here and there like the weekends when I am moving most the day I hardly feel him, or feel him more when I decide I want a lazy day. I know this will most likely change as he keeps growing. I will ask my doctor about counting kicks in the future or of anything changes, but she hasn't mentioned it herself.
None of my doctors with previous pregnancies had me do real counts. But this is my first OB. She said we'd talk about it at my next appt. I have always just paid attention to baby's movement, and if things seemed different one day I'd sit and try a cold drink and see if I could get her to move.
My doctor just told me to count once a day, and that's only if I don't feel normal movement. When we're up and walking around, our movement usually rocks the baby to sleep... So she said only if I notice that she's not moving as normal (for example, right after dinner since that's usually when she is most active for me), then sit back and drink cold water and count 10 movements in 2 hours. Usually the cold water will get her to move that much in about 10 min so then I'm done. Most days I don't even count since she is active pretty regularly.
My OB said not to get to worked up about it as long as I'm feeling consistent movements throughout the day. She said if I feel like movement has been slower than normal then I need count. If I count less than 10 kicks(any movements count as kicks) in 2 hours that's a red flag. So far I have been feeling plenty of activity(babyfish is kicking me as I type this) so I have done a couple of luck counts just to get an idea what I should do if I need to but I haven't consistently recorded them since baby is pretty active most of the time.
I had my 29 week appointment and asked my doctor about it. She told me just to sort of pay attention once a day and make sure the movement is about the same. She said if I was ever concerned to just drink a cold glass of juice and lay down for 30 minutes. If the activity didn't pick up, to give them a call.
I kind of like the idea of doing something more quantitative on a daily basis, but don't want to stress myself out over nothing either. So I'm going to try this more laid back approach and see how it goes. At this point, he moves so much and so dramatically that a laid back approach seems just fine.
My OB gave me a kick count card at my last appointment to begin at 28 weeks. I'm tracking my BP everyday too, so it seems like no big deal to me to also add in the kick count.
