Re: Exercise/Fitness Check-in 9/8

  • 1.  What are your fitness and/or nutrition goals this week?  Keep on keepin' on - I got up both yesterday and today for early morning workouts/yoga so I'll count this week as a moderate success.  Plus I think I'm slowly being successful in finding healthier snacks that actually sound good to me for the workday!

    2.  Any challenges to meeting your goals this past week?  Family staying with us last Thursday thru Tuesday morning.  Also being tired all the time.

    3.  Rants/Raves/Questions:  Man! I thought of one this morning but I forgot.  I'll edit if I think of it!

    4.  GTKY: What piece of exercise equipment (could be something at the gym, something you wear, whatever!) could you not live without? Probably my foam rollers. I have this goofy looking one called "The Worm"  that has been a lifesaver when I've had lower back pain (I just lay on it and roll back and forth slowly), and I also have this TriggerPoint roller from my running days that helps with sore and tired calves, hamstrings, quads, etc.

    1.  What are your fitness and/or nutrition goals this week?
try to do 2-3 days of strength training and 2 days of running.  I'm also trying to eat lower carb.  I had GD last time and would like to avoid it this time around.

    2.  Any challenges to meeting your goals this past week?  Just time.  I normally work out on my lunch but work has been busy lately so it's been tough and then I have no energy at night!

    3.  Rants/Raves/Questions:  I hate when people don't rerack their weights at the gym.  So inconsiderate!

    4.  GTKY: What piece of exercise equipment (could be something at the gym, something you wear, whatever!) could you not live without?  My asics sneakers with appropriate arch support.  I've been dealing with Plantar fasciitis and these sneakers are a godsend

    1.  What are your fitness and/or nutrition goals this week?  Trying to get in at least 30 mins of activity on most days. I've been walking for 40 mins at lunch time, and got to yoga on Monday. I'll run with my friends tomorrow before work.

    2.  Any challenges to meeting your goals this past week?  TIRED!

    3.  Rants/Raves/Questions:  I haven't done yoga in a while, I'm really sore in my hamstrings even 3 days later!

    4.  GTKY: What piece of exercise equipment (could be something at the gym, something you wear, whatever!) could you not live without? Good shoes!

@schef070911 I also LOVE LOVE my foam roller, it's been helping with my hamstrings.

  • 1.  What are your fitness and/or nutrition goals this week?
Same as last week. Another 5 days of running.
    2.  Any challenges to meeting your goals this past week?
We had to travel out of town for the holiday weekend, and it's been so hot this week that I have been forced to run on the treadmill, which I hate, but I got it in. I also teach high school and this was the first week with students so the exhaustion was tough to overcome.
    3.  Rants/Raves/Questions:
Very excited about next weeks weather forecast. It's supposed to actually be more fall like.
    4.  GTKY: What piece of exercise equipment (could be something at the gym, something you wear, whatever!) could you not live without?

my Fitbit surge. I love that it tracks my runs with gps so I know my exact distance.
  • 1.  What are your fitness and/or nutrition goals this week?
Get back in the swing of things with working out and not eating like a 6ft tall man. Morning sickness kicked my ass and I ate shitty foods to make it feel better. Now I'm feeling mostly normal so I'm trying to get back on track. I've already gained 6 pounds and I'm only 10 wks.
    2.  Any challenges to meeting your goals this past week?
    feeling shitty from the above
    3.  Rants/Raves/Questions:
Anyone else have mild soreness in their lower back? It started yesterday. It feels like how my back feels before my period which is making me nervous.

I need to be more consistent...my exhaustion has made it hard to get up and workout before work in the mornings...but I have found that the mornings that I get 20-30 mins of cardio in I feel MUCH better the rest of the day.

    2.  Any challenges to meeting your goals this past week?
Exhaustion and we got new carpet this week so my treadmill was disassembled and hanging out in the living room until just yesterday. It's too dark in the morning for me to get out and run...and WAY too hot after work.

    3.  Rants/Raves/Questions:
I am still getting used to this new normal...my heart-rate raises really quickly and I run out of breath very easily. I was running 20-25 miles per week before getting pregnant and I am lucky if I run/walk 10 a week now. I know it's just part of adapting and doing what is best for my body, but running is my stress reliever and being a teacher this time of year is particularly stressful ;) Hoping second trimester brings some relief!

    4.  GTKY: What piece of exercise equipment (could be something at the gym, something you wear, whatever!) could you not live without?

My treadmill! Living in the Midwest with unpredictable weather makes this piece of equipment VERY valuable to me! It will also be nice to have once baby is here!

  • @chelle087 The treadmill is my nemesis/savior...I would much rather get my miles in on the road, but it's nice to have the treadmill option when needed!

I have been a runner for several years and I am used to running 20-25 miles a week and right now I am struggling to get in 5-10...how far are you running each time? Have you noticed a HUGE decrease in your pace and endurance? I find myself walking more than running anymore!

  • @elgie I am running about 25 miles a week, between 4 and 6 miles each time, which is my normal if I am not training for a race. I do have a 10k scheduled for late this month, but I know I won't be breaking any records, so I am not a ping up my training. I have slowed down about 30 sec per mile in terms of pace, which is about where I was at this point in my last pregnancy. I was very lucky to be able to keep running through the entire time, but I know a lot of women, some of them excellent runners, that just couldn't do it. You might find that it's a little easier in the second tri, but even walking and jogging will be good for you and the baby.
    Good luck!
  • @chelle087 that's impressive! I've been so tired and nauseous the last few weeks...paired with the heat...makes running the last thing I want to do. I've been walking as much as possible and hoping for a more successful second tri! Thanks!!

  • Sigh... Doctor told me no running this pregnancy due to rupture in last pregnancy, though it didn't happen from running... :( Doctor said low impact, (elliptical or bike only)... I am very sad... I was a seasoned runner at about ~10min/mile on average (Short legs!) and its going to be like completely starting over.... I am mourning a bit.

  • @LyssaChap That stinks, I'm so sorry!! :/  I used to be a decent runner but stopped after tendonitis in my ankles and calves that I couldn't shake, then a run-in with hip bursitis. I'm hoping to get back to it after baby because I find it so relaxing and I miss it. (I'm right there in the 10 min/mile club with you too!)

My sister-in-law didn't run seriously before pregnancy but trained for and successfully ran a half marathon after her 1st kiddo, so I know I can get back to it and be stronger than ever and you can too!
