Worried **Update**

Need a place to safely vent my worries. I had my NT scan yesterday and the biggest measurement came back at 2.7mm. I wasn't worried about it since I know that some doctors are only concerned with 3mm and above. There were some measurements that were smaller, so again, I wasn't too concerned. I had blood work done as well and I got a call earlier that said that the blood work came back being positive for Down's. Since I work in the hospital, I'm able to get into my chart, which is a lot more detailed than the website where you're able to view all of your medical info. It said that I have a Papp A of 0.39, which is low and a 1:71 chance of baby having Down's. A low Papp A can be a sign of placental issues so I now have to see a perinatologist to determine whether or not the positive result was a false positive and I also have to do further genetic testing. I can't lie and say that I'm not worried. I have to wait for the specialist to call me and go from there and I'm hoping he doesn't make me wait 3 weeks or something stupid to see him. I just want to go home and cry.

**Update**
First of all, thank you all for reading this and letting me vent. I appreciate this board much more than you know! So I'm starting to feel better because after doing some research on the blood screen, it looks like the cutoff for a negative vs positive result is 1:270, so if I had a 1:269 chance it would've came back as positive.. Since I'm 35 my odds started off at 1:350. Add that to a low Papp-A of .39 (just looked at the results from when I was 32 and pregnant with my son it was .35, so it looks like I just normally have a low Papp-A) and a nuchal fold of 2.7mm, my odds increased to 1:71. I do realize that 1:71 is still ok and that does not mean that it's a diagnosis. The doctor's office called and they're actually getting me in tomorrow at 1:45, thank god! They're going to do a more thorough US, so at least I get to see my little peanut again. I'll keep you all posted. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.  <3

**Second update**
I had the level 2 US yesterday and the specialist said that everything looks fine. Nasal bone is present, heart looks good so far, and there were no soft markers for Down's. He explained how there's only a 1.5% chance of baby having Down's but still recommended the Harmony test for peace of mind. My regular doctor's office gave me the Materni21 kit, but the specialist said he doesn't like that one due to some literature that he read about it (didn't elaborate on what he didn't like) and that he likes the Harmony better so we went with that one. The results will be in by next Friday, so I have to wait for a little while. It does look like the odds are in our favor and I think that things should be fine, but I won't stop completely worrying until we get the Harmony results. I don't want to know the gender since we're team green so I'll have to be upfront about that when they call. I'll keep my hopes up for a good result and that I can rest easy for the rest of the pregnancy. I'm really wishing that I would've skipped the NT scan since false positives aren't uncommon and should've just gone straight to the Harmony test, but oh well. I'll update when I get the results.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that you're stressing! I tell you what things like pregnancy have to be so much more difficult for a medical professional - but also much more helpful to be me informed. Best luck getting set up and talking to someone for the next appointment.

  • This sounds like such a stressful time and I would have reacted the exact same way(which doesn't make it right or wrong, just saying I empathize!) I am glad that they are getting you in tomorrow and hopefully you can get some more relief! We are praying for you and will be anxiously awaiting to hear how it goes tomorrow! You are not alone in this.
  • Sorry @kiyamurph I'm late to this thread but I'm keeping you in my thoughts tomorrow!  <3 I'm glad you're feeling more positive though, and I hope the next u/s brings some peace of mind.
  • I have a similar issue going on. My NT scan was higher than yours at 3.3 mm and the nurse called me yesterday and said the Dr. wanted me to come in and discuss my results. I went in today and I have a 1 out of 91 chance of having a baby with DS. I'm only 27 so the normal chances for someone my age are 1 out of 684. So yes I'm very worried and concerned. We are keeping the baby regardless and will love him or her just the same. They suggested I do a level 2 US and an amnio test. Hubs and I decided that we will do the US, but probably not the amnio. The risk of miscarriage worries me with the test and I'm also thinking maybe I don't want to know. I'm a mess too, I just don't know what we should do!

  • Prayers for tomorrow @kiyamurph !!

Praying for you too @brobertson13.  You and your husband will make the right decision for your family, whatever that decision is.  Is there any additional blood work they can do before deciding to do the amnio?

@brobertson13 sorry to hear you're going through this stressful situation too. To me nothing is worse then a 'what if' situation. Good luck with whatever you decide in terms of testing!

  • @brobertson13 Hugs to you. I very much understand the worry this brings. Were you able to see your blood results? From my understanding, they calculate your odds based off of your age, NT measurement, Papp-A, and HCG. They want your Papp-A and HCG to be as close to 1 as possible since that's the median. Of course I learned all of this from spending a crap ton of time researching since the medical assistant I spoke with on the phone wasn't very informative. Anyway, whatever you and your husband decide to do will be the best decision for the two of you. 1:91 are still great odds.
