When to establish prenantal OB care after previous miscarriage?

I found out today I am pregnant for a second time, through a positive home test, after having a miscarriage last year in may. I had my miscarriage at 9 weeks but when i went to the ER, I was told my baby seemed to about 5 weeks and had stopped growing. It was really hard on my boyfriend and I to hear those news, we where devastated, but now we have been granted with a rainbow baby! I have been feeling the typical symptoms of the first weeks, I am a week late (on my very regular cycle) , and according to (several) Due Date Calculators I am 5 weeks along in my pregnancy. I don't know if i should see a doctor right away because of my history with a miscarriage or if i should see a doctor after the regular 8 weeks? Any suggestions?

  • Call to set up your first appointment. Most OB still won't see you until about 8 weeks or so. Once they know your history, they might want to see you earlier. Only your OB will be able to tell you for sure.

    02.2013 - loss at 6 wks

    06.2014 - DS2

    10.2015 - loss at 12 wks

    03.2017 - DD

A lot of times women go on to have healthy pregnancies after a MC and have the typical OB care. I went back to my OB and did not have any different treatment after my loss (multiple). However, having said that I think in retrospect I would want to have more attention early on after my first few CPs. Also age is a huge factor. Not sure how old you are but if you are in your mid to late 30s then it's better to see a specialist if your insurance allows for it.

    Congratulations on your BFP!
  • I personally called right away, both times they have had me come in for blood work. I know I will also get an early ultra sound, but I've had two miscarriages now. My second pregnancy they had me make the normal 8 week apt. The moment I had spotting at 6w last time they immediately had me in for an ultra sound. I would call and get things rolling personally.

Congrats, wishing you have a healthy rainbow baby
  • First off, sorry about your previous loss. Second, congrats! I had an early MC myself earlier this year so I will at least be getting blood work done. They can make sure your numbers are where they should be and that it's rising appropriately. The least you can do is give your OB a call and mention your history and let them know you would like to do that if they don't suggest it otherwise.

  • You should call your OB and also tell them of your history because they'll likely see you sooner.

  • You could definitely call. I had a very similar thing happen, but when I called yesterday, they offered to get me in but didn't feel it completely necessary. It depends on what happened to cause a miscarriage. For me, I found out in an ultrasound at almost 9 weeks that my baby never grew a placenta and stopped growing before 6 weeks. No special OB care or drugs could have fixed that. It was a random occurrence, and for that reason there's no reason to assume this pregnancy will have a problem. If your loss occurred due to a hormonal imbalance, then you will want medications ASAP to correct it. Good luck! I hope we both have healthy babies this time around.
  • I had an early miscarriage 3 years ago. My Drs office was the same way no appt until 8 weeks, with my son I called right away and since I had a history they had me go in for beta blood work to check my numbers. I was seen earlier than 8 weeks, I don't quite remember how early. This pregnancy I have to switch drs thanks to insurance, they do a confirmation of pregnancy appt which I will be 5 weeks 5 days. I'm going to let them know my concerns and see if they will also let me do blood work to keep my mind at ease.
  • Call your OB and let them know that you had a loss and that you need a first appointment. They will most likely see you early or at least order some lab work. I've had a loss after each of my kids. After my daughter, I tried to approach the pregnancy normally without going in early and that just resulted in a loss. Just like you, it stopped developing in the 5th week. Had I had gotten betas done early, we probably would have been able to figure out that the pregnancy wasn't advancing normally.

I've had 2 previous losses, so when I was pregnant with my now son, they had me come right away and they even put me on progesterone.

With my current pregnancy, I found out last Wednesday via a home test, and I went in Thursday for blood work and a f/u just on Tuesday to make sure my levels were increasing.

I'd call to see if they can get you in for blood work at least.

  • I had my latest loss 2 months ago (3 total) and I'm still working with an RE so I got seen the day of my BFP.

I am also high risk with APS and MTHFR, a history of low progesterone, and a hypothyroidism.
