Activity Level of Baby

I am curious to know how active or not everyone thinks their baby is at this stage.  I'm a FTM so I have no idea if mine is normal or not.  My little guy is pretty calm and I feel him on average 4-5 times a day.  My doctor said not to worry about any perceived lack of movement until after 28 weeks but going for hours on end feeling no movement makes me nervous.  So, for second time moms is it usually the same for all babies or, in hindsight, does it depend on the personality of the child?

Re: Activity Level of Baby

  • For mine it has depended on the child. L was pretty laid back, with 1-2 really hard kicks every 2-3 hrs. E so far has dance parties usually once a day. That being said, at this stage - anything under 30-32weeks- even if LO is super active I don't/can't notice it when I am up or moving. Example: I was rocking L and talking to my dad in the kitchen and he asked how I could stand E going crazy like that. I started to pay attention, and she was indeed kicking up a storm, and I had had no idea.

  • I was reading in What to Expect When Your Expecting last night that when you are moving baby gets lulled to sleep so during the times you are moving around you would feel him less. My little guy moves more in the mornings before I  get up and when I lay down in the evenings.

  • Mine seems to be on a schedule - active early in the morning, super active in the late morning, really chill during the afternoon, and then he starts moving around in the evening. Just like @ErikandAfton, my little guy seems to move a lot more when I'm lying down.
  • FTM here, as well. I really only feel him when I am sitting on the couch at night and especially in the mornings when I'm waking up. Weekends are usually when I feel him the most, waking and then after I eat and sit on the couch to relax. Some days I feel him more than others.

I also currently have an anterior placenta, so I know that makes it harder to feel him too. Although, at the last U/S (24 weeks, needed to get the spine measured again), he was face planted into the placenta... so he was facing front and obviously the punches and kicks would be felt through it all.

  • My first seemed to be on a schedule throughout the day. This one is kicking and punching whenever, all day long! She's super feisty and they are completely different!
  • It's like a constant dance party in my belly... I used to get like 2 hrs after gym time of calm and today I got in my car and she was dancin again! She comes by it honestly :)
  • FTM with an anterior placenta here too. I feel my little guy kicking around probably...4-6 times a day? Maybe more? But each of those sessions don't usually last more than five or ten minutes at a time. I miss it when he's not kicking, but honestly, it doesn't make me too anxious. I'm sure I'll get to the point soon where he's all up in my ribs and bladder and I'll miss these days of gentle flutters!

  • Feel like bubba must be a pretty wild guy. I feel him most anytime I'm sitting still. Stronger at night. And I have an anterior placenta.
  • This little one is slightly more tame than my last baby, which is nice. She would wiggle all night long to the point Id start to cry because I was so tired and she'd keep me awake. I would have to get up and "Rock her to sleep" by walking around. I swore she was going to be fussy like my other wiggly baby... But she has been amazing chill, good sleeper and totally amiable in every way!
So... The moral of the story... Sometimes it's not a reflection of their personality... She was just a wiggly baby at night.

This one wakes up for about a half hour when I lay and rest my back in the afternoon, and for about an hour when I lay down at night. It seems to stay in one position too... Right side, head down.
Ive had others who would flip flop all over in different positions.

My 1st was insanely active, I thought she was going to be super fussy because she hardly ever stopped moving/kicking/scraping. She was actually super chill, just liked to move a lot. Everytime she saw me she started kicking  and waving like mad. She was so amiable though, and still is at almost 10 yrs old.
My 2nd had one 20 minute active session around 9:00 each night. Other than that, she hardly moved at all. I worried so much because she hardly moved, so I would literally move my belly around to wake her up and make sure she was ok. When she was born, she was a challenging baby. Then she was a challenging toddler. She always wants me around her, I guess she was just super happy in my belly surrounded by mama.  Now she is a super smart, and still a challenging kid.
This one moves more like my first, but when I'm up walking around or moving at all, he's super still (napping). I also have an anterior placenta, but I'm a small person. As soon as I sit down or lie down, he's all over the place.
Each one is different, in utero and out. It's always a surprise ;)

  • DD was active I guess you would say..but she had a routine...it was usually getting close to me goin to bed and she would wake up and wiggle and kick. During the day she might kick me in the ribs on occasion. Now Lil Man he is all the time..he loves to play kick ball with my bladder and he gets really excited when mommy eats food. HENCE me eating like I have lost my mind...I swear he is ravenous compared to DD.

DD omg her energy level is insane. SHE NEVER STOPS. But she was a really happy baby she only cried when something was really wrong and was super friendly. As toddlers years progress..well she can have an attitude. I would say she is her mothers daughter lol. This one fingers crossed for DH laid back observer personality. I am not sure the world needs another one of my attirbutes..lol.

  • As a FTM who is considered high risk, I've been practicing how to kick count already and believe his most active times are in the early mornings and evenings. He is wiggly in the early mornings (like now) when I am sitting still before getting ready. Mostly thumps and bumps up around my belly button area. Just in the last week (weeks 26 & 27) I've been able to actually SEE my belly move with him. I have an AP too so I may have been a little later to that game! I sometimes feel him during the day but I'm usually moving around too much to fully notice unless he stomps my bladder or something haha. Then I feel him a lot at night once I've settled down again.

  • Every baby is different. With DD1 I had an AP and, even though I felt regular movement much later, she was still relatively chill... But had the hiccups constantly! With this one I don't have an AP but I've definitely noticed 2.0 is more active. Having a toddler definitely distracts me from focusing on this little one's movements, but if there's a concern maybe ask your doctor when they would like you to start practicing kick counts.

My DS never stopped moving.  He was constantly wiggling to the point where like @maamawaabangiI would almost cry!  This LO has more of a rhythm of movement and he/she is usually more active after I eat and at night when I lie (lay-whichever is grammatically correct) down to go to bed.  I wouldn't worry too much about it you'll likely see a pattern as the weeks progress.

ETA: the bump ate half of my post!

  • My son has movement patterns very similar to those already mentioned.

Mornings is when he is the most active, and he's active for what seems to be a long time. He usually kicks me awake around 8-8:30am, and just moves and moves until like 10am--belly jumping kind of movements. Then he sleeps (I assume) until after I eat lunch, then he kicks and flips for about 30 minutes to an hour. Then I don't really feel him that much until after dinner, and it's more belly jumping movements until I go to sleep. It seems he is more active after eating. :)

I definitely know he's there (he's jumping right now!) but sometimes it feels like he moves all day, even though I have read that they sleep the majority of the day. Maybe he's dreaming he's a Ninja?

This kiddo is so different from his sister. DD seemed to be on a schedule, so to say, and I'd feel her a few times throughout the day. She never got crazy active. Michael is opposite, and kicks me just about every time I sit down. It's like he doesn't want me resting any. I hope this isn't a look into what he's going to be like once he's here. He gets crazy active at night when I'm trying to go to sleep.

Edited because spelling /typing is apparently hard.
  • @AMack1216 FTM, and twins. I feel the same as you. Sometimes they never stop, and then other times it'll be hours before I feel them move. And then which one is moving exactly??? ugh.

  • Rhett hardly moves at all. I'll feel him maybe 1-3x a day. That doesn't necessarily mean that he's not moving, just that I can't feel it. I'm not too worried about it yet.
  • Cassidy is very very very active! Haven't done the kick count in a bit (waiting until tomorrow to start when I'll be 28 weeks) but it's not uncommon for me to get my 10 kicks in less than 2 minutes when she's really active. She usually sits very low tho so I can really feel them because she hits my bladder so often. She moves around all day but She's on a bit of a schedule where she has her "dance parties" at around 5 am, 8 am, 12:30 pm, and 5 pm. A bit more activity also right after dinner but Not as much as a dance party would entail. She also moves around lots when I'm in the bath for some reason

  • This kid is crazy. Some days I can't get Squish to move (either that or I'm just not feeling it). Other days, like today, Squish won't stop squirming! I was never told the position of my placenta, but because I started feeling movement at 16 weeks I'm assuming it's not anterior. I try not to worry too much on slow days because I remember I have days like today and am grateful for a break. Don't get me wrong, I love feeling Squish move, but it's like come on baby, give mommy a break for a minute!

With My first DS other expecting moms would literally gasp and stair at my stomach from across the room in our parenting / BFing classes because my son would move so much. If I was talking or its loud in the room he would go nuts. Sure enough DS number two is the exact same way. I had to stand in church because the singing made him want to go wild last Sunday. My DHs family was all in town last weekend for the long weekend and I would have to stand up when everyone was sitting around the table talking. It made most of the men super uncomfortable when I wouldn't except their chair, but my LO wouldn't stop moving around in a load room full of people. I'm pretty sure this is uncommon from what so have heard from my other mom friends and family members, but my boys like to move!
  • So I talked about this with my doctor this week. LO is super active most days. Mostly in the mornings and at night. However there are some days she's quiet. My doctor said they don't get into a cycle till week 30-32. Also to start kick counting now(I'm 28 weeks). They said pick the most active time and count ten. It's really easy to get her to do that in the morning. Also they go through growth cycles so when that happens they are a little bit quiet. If you're ever super nervous try to drink some ice cold water or juice and lay down and see if they move. OR lay on your left side. If the baby doesn't move and you're concerned call your dr.

  • Is there such a thing as TOO active? My first kiddo never moved this much. Silly question, I know.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • FTM with an AP and I'm experiencing similar movement to what others have mentioned.  Baby seems to move a ton when I'm relaxing on the couch in the evening & laying down for bed.  I also get some pretty good kicks at work when I'm leaning forward more to type at my desk....I think s/he is trying to tell me they're being squished!!  I still have good periods of the day when I feel nothing, and any time I'm with my BF's family the baby refuses to move, they're waiting patiently to feel it and this kid is a tease!!

  • Like most people here, my girl is most active in the early mornings and evenings.  She likes to start around 4am.  Once I finally get out of bed and start doing things, she seems to quiet down, but as soon as I take a longer break and relax on the couch, I'll get a few good jabs every now and them.  Then, around 8pm or so, when my FI and I are relaxing on the couch together to unwind before bed, she'll start going crazy again and it will last for a few hours.  My favorite is when I am resting my e-reader on my belly and she kicks so hard she makes it jump.  Way to give me eye strain kid.  LOL.
  • I really think it's personality two. For example I am pregnant with twins. I feel my girl way more then I feel my boy. He is way more gentle and soft. She is very aggressive and kicks super hard. She has the anterior placenta so you would think I feel her less but it's the other way around for me. I also do feel them more when I am resting or just sitting on couch.
