Acadia and the No Nap Niece

This sounds like it should be the title of a cute juvenile fiction book instead of the living hell that is my life on Mondays. My niece is 6 weeks older than my daughter and I watch her for my sister every Monday. However, she won't take a nap. When I first started watching her my sister told me that she wouldn't take a nap during the day. I know that babies need these day naps so I couldn't believe it. She did take a 3 hour nap the first two weeks I watched her, like my daughter does. But two more weeks went by that I didn't have her and suddenly she will not sleep, just like my sister said. My personal opinion is that my sister keeps it too loud at her house so she can't sleep and maybe she has gotten into the habit now? This would be fine if she didn't get overtired and then scream. She'll fall asleep for 15 min or so, jerk awake and scream. She is 4 months y'all and she screams at a pitch I've never experienced before. I mean it's a full blown tantrum!!! This makes it impossible for my daughter to take a nap who will then fight taking a nap for a few days afterward. We get her straightened out just in time to repeat the cycle the following Monday. Something has to give, I'm at my wits end. Help! What should I do?

Four month sleep regression probably. It sucked with my oldest (who only ever napped for 45 minutes at a time his entire infancy). Sorry I don't have a solution!

Probably not not your sisters fault though, at least not entirely. All baby's are different and it's best not to judge parents by their kids behavior.

I agree with @AmberLiz99 that it is likely the 4 month sleep regression. Is it possible to put your kiddo and your neice in separate places so that her screaming doesn't interrupt your daughter's naps? Not always easy to do, I know...we live in a condo so there is no escaping noise. Or maybe there is something that will at least calm your neice down to keep the screaming at bay, like a bath or massage? Do you know her bedtime routine? If you haven't tried mimicking that, it could maybe help? I'm not really sure to be homest, just throwing out ideas.
  • My three month old son does not like to nap during the day either, but he usually sleeps 8 to 10 hours in a row at night now, followed by another 2 or 3 after his early morning feed. I might be able to get him to sleep for 20 minutes on my chest or in my arms, but if I set him down, forget it, wakes up angry and shouty. Don't know how I'm going to get anything accomplished when I go back to work in 2 weeks. Wish I had advice instead of comiseration, good luck!

  • Have you tried white noise? Usually if Natalie is over tired I'll take her somewhere in a dark room with no stimulate or if we are out I'll put her in her car seat with a paci and a white noise app set on hairdryer pull the sun shade down where she can see anything. Sometimes I have to jiggle the car seat a little. She likes her naps and she needs at least minimal noise or she will be inconsolable. The white noise is soothing and it town out other noise for them.
