Early Morning Wake Ups

LO usually goes to sleep between 7-8PM and wakes between 7-7:45 AM. The past few days though she's been waking anywhere from 4AM-6AM. She's obviously still tired and grumpy. If left in her crib to go back to sleep she will cry or play for awhile (maybe 30 minutes) and then cry. I've tried feeding her and she just inhales her bottle so I'm sure that she is actually hungry... Of course I don't mind getting up to feed her, but the problem is after eating she will not go back down in her crib. If I set her down awake she will immediately bawl. If I put her down asleep she will wake up immediately and begin frantically crying and reaching for me. That made me think that maybe she is lonely and wants to snuggle so I've even brought her back to bed with me, but that didn't work either. She has been up since 4 and I've been rocking her since 5. It's now almost 7. I'm exhausted. Is this just a stage? I sleep trained her and now I feel like she is training me! Any advice or words of comfort would be very much appreciated.

Re: Early Morning Wake Ups

  • My LO usually wakes up between 5 am and 6 am everyday. Occasionally he will wake up around 4 am and I will nurse him then put him back in bed. Most of the time he plays around for about 30 mins then will start to fuss and sometimes cry. I just have to let him cry it out for about 10 mins and he will fall asleep. I don't want LO to think its okay to wake up that early so I always try to get him back to sleep. Not sure if that's helpful but you are not alone!

DS has a similar schedule to your baby.  He's down between 7&8 pm and up by 7:30 - 8am.  For the past 2 days, he's been up around 6.  I also let him play in his crib.  I turn the mobile on from my phone so he won't see me.  Within 20 min, he's crying and calling me (says mamama mamama!).  I give him his bottle.  He will drink 1 oz and will start crying hysterically for about 15 min (meanwhile, I am trying to comfort him).  30 min later, he will drink the rest.  During this week, he's only taken 1 2 to 3 hour nap a day (around 10 or 11 am).
Maybe he's going through a phase???
Our pediatrician said at DS's 9 month check up that babies around his age sleep an average of 13 hours a day.  Maybe she's gotten enough sleep and is getting used to getting up early?  My little one has been up and ready to go.  What has helped a ton is that we go for a stroll after his morning bottle.

  • 13 hours a day? I've still been going off of the 14 hour schedule. 13 would make sense. Thanks for the advice, ladies!
  • Our LO was sleeping from 7:30 until 6:30 everyday until this past week. He started waking up at 4:30-ish and not going back to sleep after I fed him. I looked it up online and apparently there's another sleep regression that happens between 8 and 10 months. At 4 months, the sleep regression is due to changing sleep patterns. This one is apparently because all the cognitive development puts the baby in overdrive and they have trouble sleeping because of it. It should only last a few more weeks. The good news is that the next one isn't until 18 months!
