Gestational Diabetes

I know we have a thread going for the early glucose test but I didn't see a thread for those people with Gestational Diabetes or with questions about it. If I missed it please let me know.

I had my early glucose test on Tuesday and failed with a 170 (should have been under 150). Went in today for my 3 hour test and failed the fasting blood draw with a 95(needs to be below 95). My second draw was a 160 (should be below 180) so that was good. My 3rd was 172 (should be below 155). Not sure what my 4th draw was but since I failed two draws I am diagnosed with gestational diabetes.I am having a really hard time with this. It's still new I know, and I also rationally know that it's not the end of the world and it's very controllable. But, that rational part of me is losing and I've been crying since I found out. I can't bring myself to read the paperwork that they sent home because I know it will just make everything more real. The diabetes education center is going to be calling to sign me up for a class and I have to call my insurance company to get more information on coverage of different supplies.

Having a rough time, and hoping to find others that can share some of their experiences either with prior pregnancies or current. I know my test was an early one so a lot of you won't be having your test for another few weeks at a minimum. I normally deal with this type of news very well, dive in, figure out what I need to know and move forward, don't dwell on what I can't change. Not so much so far. I know hormones are playing a big role in this.

Re: Gestational Diabetes

  • Hey Hun.... I got by my 1st 3hr test by the skin of my teeth. The whole weekend before finding out I was in such a panic. I have to repeat it in 6-8 weeks, so I'm not out of the woods yet. I wanted to offer creepy Internet hugs since I don't have any experience to give. I just know from working w/ patients newly diagnosed w/ diabetes, they are so overwhelmed but once they see a nutritionist, get the hang of dieting/meds, they tell me it's not such a huge deal anymore.  And just know, it's not you. The MFM doctor told me I have risk factors but it has to do with the placenta ultimately. I found there's soooooo many GD friendly snacks and recipes on Pinterest - that I'm actually going off of now for the future and I went back to a few previous BMBs and creeped on their GD check in threads to see if they had any ideas of go to meals/snacks; ideas of what worked for them (which I know will not work for everyone). Hang in there  <3 ask to see a nutritionist if they already haven't referred you to one.

  • @EISG918 Thanks for the info. I will have to look at some of the previous BMB's to get some tips too. I know I will figure it out. My dad is T2 and I know there are a lot of similarities to the diet control with that. My nephew is T1 which is not near as similar but it helps me to understand the numbers and checks and stuff. I will take a class on Tuesday and then figure out what the next steps are for nutritionists and stuff at that point. That's when I get my meter too.

  • I had gestational diabetes wit my first pregnancy...  Not sure about this pregnant yet.  At first I was very upset - I felt like I did something and was scared to stick myself to take my numbers.  However, I got used to everything and it became my routine.  I never ate so healthy.  Cause of GD, I looked great after delivery... Didn't have to much weight to lose.  In all honestly, I looked better right after I delivered than three months later!
  • I failed the 1 hour test and was sent for the 2 hour one. Got results on Wed that I have gestational diabetes. I'm 28 weeks. I'm trying to process the results. I was proud of myself for not having gained weight yet, In fact had lost a bit. Haven't been overeating, thought I was doing well since I am overweight.

I went to a GD clinic today at the Hospital and they reassured the Mom's that it's not our fault, it's pregnancy hormones messing with our system. We were given blood sugar monitors and taught how to log 4x/day for the next 2 weeks where we then meet (individually) with the endocrinologist to see how our levels are and if insulin is going to be required.

I learned that I'm likely eating too much fruit and not at the right time of day. Apparently fruit in the morning isn't great for GD. I need to eat more veggies and stop the white bread and switch to whole grain. It does mean adjusting my diet somewhat. While I will miss bagels the changes aren't all that extreme.I think the biggest thing for me is going to be actually eating 3 meals a day and 3 snacks. I tend to not eat until afternoon and mostly snack instead of full meals because the pregnancy has made me feel like I have no room for full meals.

Sometime after delivery I will be mailed a requisition to get another test done and see if the diabetes went away.

@carly79 I failed fasting with my second pregnancy. I know  how scary the diagnosis of GD can be! Please know that it is overwhelming at first but it is very realistic to eat properly and control your blood sugar without insulin. Checking your blood glucose levels frequently can seem like a daunting task but it becomes routine! Carb and protein control is the key! I thought I was going to be hungry all the time. That definitely wans't the case. I did have to train myself to eat as frequent as the dietician requested.  I had to be prompt and eat every 2-3 hours and not go past. I was still able to enjoy foods that I love (ice cream, desserts) within the proper carb range. I was allotted particular carb amounts per meal/snack. I am sure once you have meetings they will discuss the expectations of diet control. Proteins are essential!  I was told to not eat cold cereals or fruit for breakfast but could have the appropriate portion at other times of the day. Once you find food that works best for you it becomes habit. I kept a food journal/glucose level that allowed me to see what I was eating and what worked best for me. I know that each situation is different. :) I wanted to share my personal experience because I have been there. Like I said, it is extremely overwhelming but doable! I also learned that stress can also contribute to higher blood glucose levels. I discovered that while rushing around in the mornings for work. I was able to learn a lot about food and my body during my experience. I continued eating properly after my second pregnancy and was successful with weight loss and felt healthier!  I hope you receive comfort in my words. It made me feel better discussing individually with my provider and dietician. I tested 6 weeks post partum and passed! I go next week for my 3 hour test for this pregnancy. I am not nervous because I know what to expect. Us Mamas are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure we are doing our part (that we have control of) for a healthy baby! Hugs!!
  • @JessyH I'm sorry you have to join this club. I am doing a weekly check-in for those that are diagnosed. I've been at it for 5 weeks now and things are going well. I've definitely learned a lot and ultimately feel better since I'm eating better.

  •  I was diagnosed at 18 weeks. They tested me early because of family history of diabetes and I had elevated sugars before pregnancy. I've been terrified and blamed myself for this but in all reality it has not been that bad. The nutritionist visit was useless. You will basically have to figure out what works for you by trial and error. I am extremely carb sensitive so the meal plan they gave me didn't work. I found I only hit my numbers if eat pretty much low carb/no carb exept for lunch. I can eat whatever for lunch and my body seems to be happy. I am still having issues with my fasting numbers so they have put me on medication so we will see how that goes. The worst part of all of this is pricking your finger 4x a day. On the good side of things.....My weight gain has been minimal at only 3.5 lbs and I am 23 weeks now. Less to loose after the baby! Good luck with everything. Its not as overwhelming as we all thought.
  • @heatherbunn24 I was diagnosed at 21 weeks, we are definitely in it for the long haul. If you are up for it, join us for the weekly check-in. There isn't a lot of activity there yet because most people on the board are just starting to have their tests (and I really hope more people don't have to join us). I'm actually waiting for the doctors to say something about my weight loss. The first month I lost 5lbs. I'm hoping it was just my body adjusting to things. I hope the meds help keep your numbers good.

  • Yeah they commented on my weight loss too! I told them if I could eat we wouldn't have this problem! :) I'm down about 5ish too in the first month. We got this though!
