Mystery rash?

ok, so I'm gonna start out with no, I'm not at all comfortable with this situation and I just don't know how to react... I've been baby sitting my friends daughter for quite some time on and off. I spoke with them Sunday night and they said she wasn't feeling well and had a fever and that if she wasn't better they would call me and let me know if they were staying home with her... I didn't receive an update so I assumed she was ok and went to pick her up, we put her in my car and she was a little warm but I didn't notice anything alarming. I got the girls home and noticed that she was hot again and had a weird rash all over, worst on her feet. I told her mom and asked if it could be chicken pox, she has apparently had that vaccine. The whole family went to a fair Saturday so she was trying to think of an animal that would give her a rash... I've had farm animals my whole life and I have never seen one cause a full body rash 2 days later that doesn't itch... Hives yes, rash? Not so much... So I nursed her all day yesterday and got her fever down and she seemed like she was feeling a lot better towards the end of the day. I picked her up today and she still has the rash. Can a yeast diaper rash spread all over or could this be hand foot and mouth? I'm so angry they let her go into day two of this with no improvement without warning me or taking her to get checked out, I have no idea what my daughter and I are being exposed to but I don't feel like it's my place to tell them they need to take the kid in... I'm hoping for heat rash, it looks like one but I don't know how long those typically last? At this point both my daughter and I have been pretty well exposed to it fml... Any ideas guys?

Re: Mystery rash?

  • I should add that the fever is gone and she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, but she isn't eating quite as voraciously as usual...

Heat rashes usually clear up fairly quickly. My son got them a lot when I first started baby wearing. He's get them on his chest and cheek where he was pressed against me. They were almost always gone within hours. Yeast rash- that one I can't say for sure but LO has had several and even the absolute worst one we ever had did not spread passed the area that his diaper covered.

honestly, if you're watching their kid for them- I don't see how you could be in the wrong for being concerned and recommending they take her in. It kind of baffles me that they wouldn't take the initiative to do that themselves.

  • She doesn't seem all that concerned... It doesn't seem to bother her at all I'm just really worried about what I'm exposing myself and my DD to at this point, no sign of it on either of us yet, this is why you should never work for friends, they have a way more laid back parenting style than me and I spend a lot of time biting my tounge and worrying that im mommy shaming, but at the same time I feel like it's a bit rude to not even warn me what I'm walking into, but I need the money as well so it's a rock and a hard place for me
  • Wow that erased half of my post, anyway her opinion on the Doctor was that she googled rashes and pretty much everything said to let it run its course so it would be a waste of a trip... I just wish I knew what the heck I was dealing with here...
  • For what it's worth (just to maybe offer an alternative), heat rash can stick around for AGES. My son is very prone to them, even now at almost a year old, and we actually just went to the doctor last month about one that was sticking around and wasn't clearing up (doc confirmed heat rash, recommended cotton onesies at night, cool baths, and keeping sweat off him as much as possible). Without seeing the rash I can't weigh in too much, since I can't see it, but for what it's worth, my son's stuck around in various levels of angry red bumps all over his chest, back, neck, and thighs, for a little over three weeks, despite my best efforts.

  • For reference - this is a super old picture (like, 10 months ago old), but this is what his heat rash always looks like when it flares up, and it's all over his body, not just on his face.

Now, that said, if it's NOT heat rash (and that should be determined by a doctor), then you have every right in the world to tel your friend that, in the interest of protecting your daughter, you will not watch her child anymore unless she has this checked out. They may be friends, but your first priority has to be your daughter. You are her first advocate, and it's honestly pretty inconsiderate of your friend to be sending a child that may be sick to your house if she has something contagious. As a caregiver, you are well within your rights to set terms for your continued services.

  • It did look like heat rash, it's mostly gone now and I hopefully won't have her again for a while, but I had a talk with her (mom) last night about how uncomfortable and on he spot this made me feel and in the future if she is sick she will be either seeing a doctor or finding alternate care... I really just felt blindsided to begin with because they really made it sound like she just had a little normal teething fever which is obviously not contagious and nbd, then I got her home and it was like holy sick batman! I just kept my DD as far away as possible and I've been obsessively sterilizing things, no sign of it on DD so hopefully I'm in the clear. Thankfully. Don't watch her all the time, the both of them are a bit of a handful anyways, I've had her for two weeks straight and I'm ready for a break for sure
  • If your babysitting for your friend I would tell her she needs to be seen by a dr, especially if she has a fever on top of the rash. You don't want to put you or your daughter at risk if she's contsgious. You did right by telling her you won't watch in future if she's sick without seeing dr.

My daughter gets a rash on her legs and feet. Dr said it was just seborrhea and would clear up on its on over time, nothing to worry about. Though it doesn't bother her and never caused a fever. I got it controlled with aquaphor ointment at night and eczema lotion in the morning (if I stop the regimen for a few days the rash reappears). Of course it's only ever been on her legs. She's had a mild diaper yeast infection also and it never spread.
