April 2017 Moms

When will you start to work on the nursery?

We have an empty bedroom in preparation for when we got pregnant. Each kid has their own room, so nobody is getting kicked out or sharing rooms... so there won't be any moving.

I'm 9 weeks, baby is healthy, strong heartbeat. I have no history of miscarriage. This is my third pregnancy.

I want to start getting the furniture now while everything is still in stock, etc, have everything paid for and done so that I am literally not worrying about this later. I'm going to have a painter come in and get the paint on the walls, etc. I have everything in a cart and I'm ready to click purchase..... but why am I hesitating?!

When do you plan to work on the nursery?

  • I wish we had an extra room.  This baby will be bunking in our room for the first few months and then will share with my son who is 10 months now.  I'm really hoping we have another boy for room sharing purposes. Lol

Yeah, Baby will be in our room in the pack n play for a good two months, I would imagine.

  • @LyssaChap I also have a empty bedroom that has been waiting to become a nursery. And thanks to DS, I have the crib, changing table, glider already on hand. Everything is just hanging out in the bedroom. Crib isn't put together. I have a ton of stuff from DS that I have been saving, so I don't have a ton to buy. I already have inspiration for the nursery (elephants). It will mostly be the white/grey with pops of color depending on gender. We have been using that spare bedroom as a "closet" for the clothes that are too small/big for my boys. I will definitely need to get tubs to put all these extra clothes in. I'm not really concerned about getting it done right away. Probably won't start until Christmas time..

  • We're in a strange situation because we will be moving to a different state when LO is between 2-3 months old, hopefully to a bigger place where we can set up a nursery.  Right now I'm planning having baby stay with us (in our room) in our current place so the extra bedroom can be for out of town guests coming to visit/help as well as some baby storage.

Not sure how I'm going to feel about that when my nesting instincts kick in, though! :/

My kids are 12 and 8, so we are virtually starting completely over from scratch. We are also doing grey and white with pops of color depending on gender. Arrow decals for the walls and stuff. :)

  • @LyssaChap If I was starting from scratch I would probably start buying or at least saving to buy the big furniture type things now. Its easier to have that cost spread out over time instead of hit you all at once. Not sure how *willing* family/friends are to help out with things on the registry since this is your 3rd, although with a big age gap.. I would save the smaller stuff for a registry.

  • We probably won't do anything until we know the sex, and even then we'll probably wait until DS moves out. He's only 1, so I'm not looking forward to moving him out of his crib (his daycare does Montessori-inspired stuff, so he sleeps on a floor bed there, so I think we'll do a floor bed for him at home and see what happens). This baby will shack up with us for the first couple of months, like DS did, though. I just want him in his new room with his new bed before the baby comes to avoid having too many changes for him at once.

My thoughts exactly. I don't want to have to buy anything once the baby is here. I already have a VERY hefty supply of diapers that I got from couponing, stacking coupon codes, and I work for Nestle Purina so I will get STEEP discounts on Gerber formula through their employee coupon program...

I, literally, don't want to have to pay for much of anything once the baby is here.

Oh yeah, totally different when there is already a kiddo in the space.

We will know the gender in three weeks through the NIPT testing... planning the gender reveal party for 10/8. So, I will obviously wait on the colorful rug or throw blankets, etc until after that point.

  • So far we have the room, which I painted green last year in anticipation of it being a nursery eventually. We also have a glider, a dresser, mamaroo, bouncer and swing for at grandma's, a boppy lounger and nursing pillow, crib mobile. I've just been picking things up as I see them. Most of what I've gotten has been free or a really great deal. Next on my list is to start stocking up on cloth diapers and to find a crib. Then I'll get to repainting the crib, dresser and glider gray with chalk paint. I've also periodically been adding items to a private registry to keep track of what I've researched and decided I want/need.

I know eventually I'll get to a point where I run out of steam, but I figure starting early ensures I have time to find good deals and spend as little as possible.
  • @LyssaChap Since TB ate the second part of my post...

Don't hesitate! Click that purchase button! I felt so much better once we had the big stuff out of the way.

Yeah! That's how I felt about diapers. I got an amazing deal on diapers on Jet.com using their buy more save more and 15% three orders deal..... All diapers.... and it average out to 8-10Cents per diaper and I won't need to buy any diapers until after the baby is 1!

  • We are converting our Guest Room into the Nursery, so we will probably wait till February-ish to set it up so if we have guests they have a place to stay. However, we already have furniture left over from DD. We will only need to buy the little decor stuff. With #1 I think we did nursery about 3 months before she was born as well.

  • Let me, also, add. This will be my first child that will have their own "nursery", so I have never been able to decorate a nursery before.... save the first time for the last baby, I guess??? haha

  • We have all of the furniture from DS. He is actually still in that room. Will probably move him out in November or December to give him time to adjust to a new room before new baby. We will probably start to plan the nursery once we know the gender around 20 weeks. If it's another boy we probably won't change much.
  • I did a nursery for DS in "forest critters" theme. My feet were ridiculously swollen from climbing a ladder to hand stencil animals and leaves for a border. This baby won't have a nursery as we will probably bed share or at least room in for the better part of a year, plus I'm unwilling to dismantle our guest bedroom to make a baby room just yet. In my perfect world, DH will get a job in the spring and we'll move out of state and closer to family when baby is a few months old. Both of us kind of hope this is another boy so we can just buy bunk beds and call it good.
  • I am still cosleeping with DS. We are hoping to transition him into his own room in the next few months. We have a guest bedroom that we could convert into another nursery, but I don't know if its worth the effort if baby #2 won't sleep in there. I think we will wait and see if baby #2 will sleep in the bassinet or crib before we set up another nursery.
  • We will be leaving the nursery as it is for the new baby and DD will be moving into a big girl room! We will lose our guest room but plan on getting a sectional with a pullout bed. Not as ideal as a separate guest room but still gives out of towners a place to stay! We were Team Green for DD so the nursery is already neutral, we will just take out the things specific to her.

@LyssaChap I say buy! Although we had all of the furniture well ahead of time, we didn't start setting the room up until two months before she was due. It was nice not stressing about furniture coming in, especially because her dresser took four weeks to get here!

  • We plan to move DD into the spare room because it's slightly bigger, and use her room as the nursery. However we first need to move our bunnies into the basement room and the carpet in the upstairs of the house needs to be replaced...so much to do
  • I found a crib on Amazon that I simply don't want to disappear between now and when I decide to pull the trigger, and it's grey! And I have had a hard time finding grey cribs that I like.

Its neat hearing what everyone else is bouncing around!

  • I'm going to wait until I hopefully get further along before I plan our nursery (stupid PGAL brain). Luckily I'm getting a lot of hand me downs from my sister so I hopefully won't have to buy much.

  • If it were up to my H, it would be done by now, lol. We were using what will be the baby room as an office/craft room so we have to find new homes for all that before we can set up the baby room. Thankfully I'm a pack rat, and even tho we were "done" we still have all our baby furniture and most of the clothes and toys.

And if anyone is shopping for cribs, the $100 ones from IKEA are great and hold up very well.

  • With DS we got everything purchased and set up as we transitioned from second to third trimester. I wanted everything to be ready just in case he came early. We will probably do the same thing this time around. I'll be keeping a close eye on sales around Christmas time for some of the bigger items.
  • I say go for it. I had the perfect crib picked out and then it was discontinued so when I found another one I liked (I'm picky) I bought it right away before we even got pregnant again. I'm also a couponer so I have a HUGE pile of diapers that I've been picking up. I've bought almost all of them for under $3 a pack. (Hopefully baby isn't picky bc I have huggies, pampers and seventh generation!). Once I'm out of the 1st trimester I'm going to buy a mattress and have my hubby set up the crib.

Of course I also have tons of room in my house as it's just me and the hubby with 4 bedrooms.

  • We're living with my mom right now and my girls currently share the only actual bedroom we have available. New baby will be in the rock n play in our "room" right now but I hope to at least decorate the corner for her/him. Hopefully once we move out we can get a four bedroom so everyone has their own space again!
  • Ok. I bought it. I definitely didn't want it to discontinue into the abyss before deciding to pull the trigger!!! It's awesome convertible with side changing table attached. Measured the space fits the room. Sold.

  • Skipping a nursery altogether. Babe can sleep in DH and I's room in a rock n play then pack n play until he or she is sleeping through the night (I've never had this happen before 14 months) then they will go in either the boys' bedroom or girls' bedroom in a crib. Both our older kids are rooting for a baby of matching sex since the 'winner' will eventually get a set of triple bunk beds. We have a 4th bedroom, but it's currently a guest room/playroom for my older kids - I like reserving the extra space and the kids like sharing rooms. There's an ikea changing table already set up and stocked downstairs since I currently have two toddlers in diapers. Will pull out the travel swing and bouncer in the spring and that's about it. Definitely going minimalist with #5!
  • I'm paranoid and refuse to buy anything this early.  One of my kids will be sharing a room (eventually) and the kids that share will be taking over my room.  I'm in zero rush.  The first two slept in my room for 6 months so that's 13 months before I need to worry about moving people/painting/furniture.  If I was going to buy new furniture, I'd probably take the time to look for deals now instead of just buying.

  • We will likely be moving internationally somewhere around 5-6 months so not until after that for sure. But I'm in no rush. The nursery won't be used for the first 3 months at the very least anyways. And so little of the stuff you 'need' is actually necessary anyways.

  • @BeachMommy2B

Same here. Our guest bedroom is becoming the nursery, but I'm unsure what do to with the extra daybed we have in there.
  • @shaunessa we decided to get rid of the mattress because it is pretty old. We're going to keep our queen bed frame that's in there and just store it in our attic for now.
