Antral follicle/eggs retrieved/OHSS question... Help appreciated

Hi everyone!

This is my first cycle and I went in for my saline ultrasound today to confirm that I was good to go.  Ultrasound looks good with just a little dip at the top of the uterus, she said its so small that it shouldn't be an issue.  However, she said that there's a good chance that I will be a high responder (good, yet could be bad)

On my left ovary I had a minimum of 10 antral follicles and on my right I have 23.  I'm at risk for OHSS. For those who have had OHSS, how many antral follicles did you start with and how severe was your case?  I'm trying to prepare and I appreciate any insight.

Also, how many antral follicles did you have versus how many eggs did they retrieve.  I really do appreciate any insight as I'm new to this.  Thanks everyone, sending lots of positive, sticky vibes your way!

  • @bpfeiff84 - Sorry you didn't get any responses here.  I'm also curious... I just had an ultrasound today and my antral follicle count was 39 (21 & 18).

  • I must have missed this post (sorry), but during my ER I ended up with severe ohss. My RE gave me a heads up about it and I started a high protein, high salt diet along with lots of Gatorade two days before ER. At my ER I had 43 eggs!  Despite my best efforts with the diet, 5 days later I had to have my abdomen aspirated and they took out over 2 1/2 liters of fluid!!
It was a terrible side effect of my ER and one that I hope you do not have to go through!!  Good luck to both of you!

  • My Initial count was only 11 I think, but the meds overstimmed and they ended up taking out 40 follicles. Only 23 contained eggs.  But I am 41 so I am sure that made a big difference in the count.

  • @bells52000 wow that a great number, how many embryos did you get.  I just went through my first ivf cycle only really getting 4 mature ones, had to cancel so hopefully i'll get more the next round.

The numbers went down each step @Hopeful_mom.  19 of the 23 were mature and 12 of them fertilized.  Of the 12, half made it to the 5 day blast. And I have 3 now that are tested normal.  My first transfer of one frostie is today!  My main issue is that I am 41 so my egg quality is iffy and one ovary is blocked.  Best of luck to you on your next cycle! It just takes one and I hope you get it!

  • @bells52000 good luck with your transfer today!  I'll be thinking about you!
  • @bells52000 wow I can't believe that, BEST OF LUCK!!!  really hoping you get that BFP!!  I'm 40 as well so i'm in the same boat and have been really TTC since 38, so i'm just disappointed all around.  Your number are amazing, I just had 4/5 so you can understand why I was so disappointed as usually 1/2 don't make it.  I know it takes one BUT I have to be honest at this point in time i'm praying for twins.  Can't wait to see your update, best of luck!!

  • RE said the transfer went as well as it could.  And then he said it's a 50/50 chance of sticking! Ahh! 50 sounds good, but I wish it was 100%! Thanks all for the happy vibes!

@Hopeful_mom twins are not likely for us since we are only transferring one at a time.  But that's okay with new! Wishing great numbers for your next cycle.  For what it's worth, I think my office moves forward with 4 mature.  Maybe they could let you.  Especially if you are fine with transferring multiples.

  • @bells52000 awe that's great news, I feel great for you, hoping for the best!!  back story is my OH was with his sick child in the hospital and couldn't get me a sample to go through with the procedure was the final reason we didn't move forward with it.  I was considering just freezing them BUT we weren't optimistic they would survive the thaw.  I'm also paying out of pocket for it so we decided to wait.  Did I make the right choice, I'll never know but hoping I did.  Will probably start another round in about another week give or take so we shall see.

  • can you tell me more about your experience with OHSS @jodes727 . I am afraid I am heading that way. I had an enormous of amount of eggs retrieved and I'm in a lot of pain. When did the ohss start? How long after retrieval? How did you know what was normal and what wasn't? This is my first retrieval so I'm not sure if this pain is to be expected. Thanks so much!
  • @runfast I had my retrieval on a Wednesday and I felt fine just kind of out of it from the Anastasia on Wednesday. By Thursday I was starting to get bloated but still could move around a bit. By Friday I was in bed for the whole day and very bloated and definitely retaining a lot of fluid. Within the first four days I had gained over 9 pounds.  On Saturday I was in bed again the whole day and feeling very uncomfortable and starting to have a hard time breathing. On Sunday I went to the ER after I saw my RE  to get IV medication, protein, to try and combat all of the fluid in my abdomen. By Monday I knew that medication did not work at all and I was in radiology getting my abdomen aspirated.  By Monday I was having a harder time breathing because there was so much fluid in my abdomen and starting to get into my lungs. I looked huge, seriously looked like I was at least six months pregnant due to all of the fluid.

During this whole time I stayed in close contact with my doctor, and kept calling because I knew something was not right. I would definitely be proactive with this, because it was not a good experience at all.

Let me know if you want any other info. GL!!
  • @jodes727 Thanks so much for sharing. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Do you know what your trigger shot was? I did a lupron trigger with 1000 units of HCG. I am curious when you got your period because I know once you get your period you usually start to feel better.

By the way, I definitely look 6 months pregnant right now. It's bad!
  • @runfast I had moderate OHSS. I was on an 8 day medication. I can't remember what it was called though. It seemed to keep me from getting severe OHSS. They also told me that if I gained more than 4 pounds in a day that I was supposed to call the office immediately. I drank a lot of Gatorade (as much as I could). I had about 50 follicles and had 46 eggs retrieved. It was very crazy. If you are at all concerned call your doctor. Trust your instincts.

  • @Christianner Thanks for sharing. I'm on that medication too as well as an injection that is supposed to help. Do you know what you triggered with? When did you get your period post retrieval? Thanks so much!
  • @runfast I got my period 12 days after my retrieval (ER on 7/27 and period on 8/8). After I was aspirated I felt better instantly compared to what I was. I took a good week and a half after that to be back to normal.

GL and take care of yourself. Don't hesitate to cal your RE if you're concerned!!
