Poop/solid food question

Hi there!  Sorry to do a poop post!  But at least no pics!  Haha.  Anyway, so ever since my LO started daycare, our daycare provider has mentioned that she poops more than any baby she has ever taken care of, not just the amount of times a day (1-3) but the volume of each poop, which almost always is more than her diaper can contain.  Two weeks ago she also mentioned that it was very liquidy in consistency, more than even breastfed babies she's taken care of.  (LO is formula fed.)  We were late on starting solid foods, didn't start til 6.5 months, so we started them right away, assuming that would firm up the consistency.

We started with avocado for 3 days, sweet potato for three days, and it hadn't changed much, so we called our dr.  He was completely unconcerned that there was a food allergy or intolerance because she's growing very well, not in any pain (very happy all the time) and has had no mucus or blood in her stool, and because the consistency of her poo has always been kind of liquidy.  He says every LO has their own consistency and we should only worry if she has blood, mucus, pain or discomfort or fever.  He suggested giving her a bland diet for a bit and just doing rice cereal.

Well, it's been nearly a week into just rice cereal in the morning and at night and there's still no change and our daycare provider keeps saying we should take her in to have her stool tested.  Thoughts?  Part of the issue is that she doesn't really like cereal that much and is only eating about 4 tsps each "meal" of it.  I otherwise adore our daycare provider and don't want to rock the boat or anything, but I just don't think there's anything wrong and I assume the consistency will slowly change as we keep adding more solids in.

I would LOVE any opinions!

Edited to add - LO generally has 1-2 poops a day, 3 is rare, and she seems ONLY to poop at daycare.  She doesn't at night or in the am or pm, so I feel bad because our daycare provider is getting all of it, other than on the weekends.

Re: Poop/solid food question

  • Our volume per poop is alot less since LO started solids. Breast fed and solids at 5.5/6 months. She might poop 2 times a day maybe more some days but  might be only a small poop "patty" as I call it. Firm enough to be solid enough not to be a blow out or absorbed into the diaper like newborn poop. Might not hurt to get LO checked out. Better safe than sorry... daycare sees alot of poop so they wouldn't tell you unless they thought it was out of the ordinary for that age range.
  • Brynlee has always had extremely explosive poops. It seems to have been due to the amount of air she was taking in with her bottles. She was trying to get formula out faster than her bottle would allow, making her suck in tons of air, giving her lots of gas and explosive poop. We moved her up to fast flow nipples and have had very few explosions since. We also size up on diapers (she's 17 lbs 8 oz and wears size 4 diapers) which helps drastically.
Also, since she is incredibly uncooperative and uninterested in solids, we tend to add a bit more cereal to her bottles (she won't eat it by itself). We usually do 1/2 a scoop of cereal to a 4 oz bottle, but if we notice things getting a bit loose, we'll go up to 3/4 scoop, or vice versa if things seem to be a bit dry...

These are all super helpful tips!  Our LO is exactly the same size as yours and she's still in 3 diapers.  And she still uses 1 or 2 nipples, so we'll switch those out too.  And I've been wondering about adding cereal to her bottles, since she basically has no interest in cereal by spoon (it's her least favorite solid food so far!)

And if none of that works, we'll get her checked out by our doctor (or another one, since ours didn't seem concerned at all.)

    THANK YOU!!
  • With Brynlee she had such horrible digestive issues, we ended up going to the pediatrician weekly (on the phone daily) and we also took her to specialists. I don't think we are completely past them, but those things were a huge help. The flow on the bottle was probably the most helpful.

I just wish she would eat something! My stinker refuses pretty much everything but formula.
  • My LO is formula fed and was an every other day pooper (and very formed but not hard) before we started solids. Now he goes twice sometimes three times a day and the consistency is much softer. I think all babies bodies process differently and where I have food allergies his pediatrician also said unless there is blood, mucus or pain it's normal.
  • @BarrettJ89My LO pretty much refuses everything but my boob. :( I wish she would eat something too! She liked avocado for like 2 days, and that's it.

@maureenmce My LO poops a lot in my opinion, usually about 2x per day that completely fills (and overfills) the diapers, sometimes even 4 times a day. She's EBF and doesn't eat much food at all, just tastes food basically and then spits it back out in disgust. It's still liquidy, and my pediatrician doesn't seemed concerned at all. So I don't think it's anything to worry too much about, but I suggest just checking in with your pediatrician anyway and mention what your daycare provider said.
  • If your baby seems happy/not in pain and this isn't out of the ordinary I wouldn't be concerned about it at all, but that's just me :) definatrly if you're concerned take her to the Ped but if not then I wouldn't stress. My little guy is about to turn 8 months. We started solids at 6 months and his poops are just now starting to consistently be less liquidy! He is breastfed but he's always popped at least twice a day. That's great that your daycare provider is so in tune/involved in making sure your little one is healthy but ultimately you know what's best I'm sure you're making the right call on if it's something to be concerned about or not
  • Is your daycare provider a health professional? It seems to me like they want to be in the wrong business.
If your ped says it's fine, and baby isn't raising the alarm, then it is likely fine.
Maybe instead of trying to fix something that isn't broken, you can pointedly ask the daycare provider whether her concern is really health-related, or does she just not enjoy changing LO's soft diapers?
  • Our poop consistency seems to directly correlate with the consistency of food. It wasn't until recently that it firmed up and became less liquid-y. We started adding more cereal to the purées and the poop firmed up. Volume is still the same but at least it's less messy? Lol
  • Ours will poop 4-5 times a day at daycare.  They vary between solid and still pretty liquidy.  That seemed like a lot to us, but they told us it's pretty common when transitioning to solids.
If the Dr is worried and LO seems healthy and happy, I wouldn't worry.
  • Thanks for all the feedback!  My husband talked to our doctor at length and he is certain she doesn't have a food allergy and has none of the symptoms, so we're not worried at this point.  She's just barely started to eat solid foods, so I imagine there will be an adjustment period.  She is absolutely healthy and thriving (79th percentile in height and weight) and is very happy, so I'm not going to stress about it.  :)
  • It sounds like the daycare provider is the one with the problem, not LO. Hopefully when you explain to her that the doctor says everything is A-okay (yet again), that she'll let it go. My guess is she probably just doesn't like dealing with the poo! But honestly, you've indulged her enough at this point.
