Our son is 11.5 months, and is on a two nap schedule. He wakes for the day anywhere from 6:00-6:45. Morning nap is from about 9/9:30-10:30/11 and afternoon nap is from about 2/2:30-3:30/4ish. For about a week now one of his naps has been a nightmare. It can be either the morning or the afternoon. For the bad nap it can take him an hour or longer to fall asleep. Today he took a great first nap, fell asleep within about 20 minutes and slept for about 1.5 hours. He woke from that nap at 11:30.
I put him down for his second nap around 2:50. He was downstairs getting fussy, rubbing his eyes, putting his head on my lap...all the signs to show he's sleepy. Brought him upstairs, put him down, and he is still not asleep. He has rolled around his crib making sounds, talking, etc, for about 1.5 hours now. At about the one hour mark I thought maybe he's still hungry, brought a bottle in, he pushed it away, wanted nothing to do with it. I laid him right back down, and he is still continuing to just roll around.
He has been walking since 10 months, so it's not like that's anything new for him. He is teething right now, two bottom incisors about ready to pop through. Could that be causing these major sleep issues? We put him down for bed normally at 7, and he falls asleep by about 7:20. In a few minutes I'm going to take him out of the crib, because he clearly isn't ever going to fall asleep for this nap, and now it's getting too close to bed time.
He will have been up for 7.5 hours by the time we reach bedtime...even if we scoot bedtime forward by a half hour or so, that is still a RIDICULOUS amount of time for him to be awake. Help!!!
Anyone else getting major nap refusals?
Re: How do you handle nap refusal?
Big mistake for me .. Putting her down for one nap has screwed up her sleep schedule at night!! Eek - it's the worse thing. She's been getting up every other night at 11-2am-ish just playing or body rocking or head bumping (which she usually does to fall asleep).
I'm gunna continue to "offer" her two naps a day and if she skips it herself then fine ... Usually I give her a solid hour to fall asleep but if she hasn't then I'll put her down for the next nap /bedtime earlier.
But id like to follow for any other suggestions ! I'm like sleep deprived all over again at night !!!?!
@LoveLee85, 12 hours!! I thought we were going to set a record tonight with 7, yikes!! We usually have a pretty good sleeper! Night time he always sleeps through, it's the naps that can get a little hairy. He was in the crib today for like 2 hours totally content, just rolling, talking, playing, etc! I kept looking at the monitor thinking he'd fall asleep any second...NEVER did! We put him to bed a little earlier, and he fell asleep fairly quick. Hoping were back on track soon! Goodluck with your new routine, hope it continues to work out well!!
For her afternoon nap, I give her 15 mn to fall asleep and if she doesn't, then I take her out and try again in a half hour or an hour. When I put her down again, I reprat her naptime routine.
For her morning nap: she has been taking it later as she gets older, but still needs it, so I give it a try, but I don't fight her on in. If she skips it, or we are out and about, then I put her down right after lunch and she ends up taking 1 nap.
Her morning nap is from 11:15/11:20 until noon, afternoon nap is 3-5pm. Bedtime is 7:45ish, and she generally wakes up around 8am.
Having a naptime routine is key for us since it helps her to unwind.
