Working moms who still nurse / pump

I have been so focused on making it to a year, that I am not sure what I am going to do after 12 months. I have certainly had so many issues nursing (plugged ducts, dips in supply) and was just concerned I would not be able to keep it up. But LO will be a year old in a month and I have not had to supplement. He has certainly started day weaning but I still pump once a day so he gets two sippy cups at daycare. I still nurse morning, and a couple times at night. I guess I will just see where the journey takes us. Work is starting to ask if I can travel but That doesn't mean I would stop pumping / nursing. Any other working moms going to continue nursing and just going with the flow? Are you worried about how it will naturally progress or if your employer will ask you to travel? Surprised that you will continue? Any second time moms remember when their first baby day weaned and you could stop pumping at work?

Re: Working moms who still nurse / pump

  • I just weaned and I miss it and have serious mom guilt sometimes about it. So go you for sticking with it!!

  • I work full time and my babe is 11.5 months.  She feeds morning and night and just had water and solids throughout the day.  I still breastfeed before breakfast and she is definitely still have proper feeds both morning and night.

When she is one I'm planning on giving breakfast before breastfeed and I think her interest in breastfeeding in the morning will wane as she is super into food when offered.  I'm planning on offering morning and night for as long as she likes however, I am travelling for work for three days when she will be 15mths old so will be interested to see how that goes.

She doesn't drink plain cows milk or almond milk but will have it with cereal, smoothies etc.
  • @dmbfan46835 thanks! I have a love / hate relationship with it, so I am not sure what I am going to do. I can see having guilt and being relieved it is over at the same time!

@livvyloo87 Did your LO just stop nursing during the day or was it a slow reduction. We have gone from 16 to 6 ounces during the day but it has been holding at 6 ounces for awhile. I have daycare give him water plus two sippy cups of BM. They informed me that because they are a licensed facility they have to give LO milk twice a day. They are to follow USDA child care food plan. I wasn't planning on giving milk but rather water. He eats well and he gets his nutrition from other foods. I do send in yogurt for his breakfast, so he is getting dairy anyway. It is a non issue now because I am sending in BM. Just curious if you have run into this or maybe Your LO is with family or a private daycare?
  • My LO just turned 11 months and I'm thinking of weaning around one year. My supply has been steadily dropping since she started solids. She still does 2-3 bottles of breast milk with a little whole milk as well. I only nurse morning and night because of work. I think the morning feed will be the last one that I drop. I'm kind of going with the flow for right now. This is my second baby but the first one that I was able to breastfeed. I hate pumping but I really love nursing. I hate to stop and then feel guilty when it's all done.
  • @KristiSigma when I went back to work full time at 9 mths, she was looked after by her Dad and she would drink between 2-4oz expressed BM.  When I was home on the weekends she would only nurse for 1min or so.

So when she started daycare at 11 mths, I just told them to give water and she has done fine with the switch.  We love in NZ so maybe our govt rules are different - our daycare just gives whatever the parent says.

My child wellness officer said between 6-10 mths they need around 600ml of milk or formula and from 10-12mths around 400ml and that other forms of milk can be introduced from 10mths.  So, I breastfeed first thing then she gets porridge made with cow or almond milk, she will usually get yoghurt and cheese throughout the day then I breastfeed at night.

That said, she's got a cold right now and is wanting to breastfeed quite a lot!
  • Good post! I've had this on my mind quite a bit lately. My goal was one year also, and that will be here in about 3 weeks! Haven't had to supplement and haven't introduced other types of milk yet. DD does get cheese and yogurt though.

I'm having an issue of from the time DD fully wakes up in the morning, she will nurse for only a hot second then try to get down when I'm home, or when DH has her she will drink like an oz and be done. Then she also picks at her food, spits a lot of it out now, and basically refuses anything but Cheerios, fruit, toast, cheese, beans or peas. So she has essentially day weaned, which is fine, but because she also is not wanting to really eat much solid food, I'm still having to get up 2-3 times between 10pm and 5am to nurse.

My plan had been to nurse her once in the morning and once before bed when she hit one year, then use up my freezer stash while introducing another type of milk during the day, until the freezer stash ran out, then drop the morning feeding, and continue nursing at night until she weaned herself or I got pregnant again.

Of course, little lady already dropped the morning feed and is not being cooperative with my master plan. Because of this, I've pretty much stopped pumping while at work for the past two weeks, and am resigning myself to nursing at night forEVER. Lol!
  • DS eats 5 bottles a day (four and then bedtime feed) of breasmilk and he never lost interest or reduced the amount he was drinking regardless of food intake. At 11 months, I started a slow weaning process of substituting one daily bottle of milk (cow, almond, etc.--we are trying different things) for one bottle of breast milk. Each week I sub out another bottle, and this is week 2. Now that he's having some non-beast milk, he's definitely less interested in milk in general. By his first birthday, he'll still have his nighttime feeding but the rest of his milk intake will be from other sources.

Because I'm at work, I don't witness him having other milk but it was definitely a hard decision to start to wean. I'm so anxious about the end of breastfeeding. I've loved it and I'm going to miss that part of our bond! That's why I'm giving up the nighttime feed last.
  • @blizmark Why do they never go along with the master plan?!?!? Lol. I use to nurse right before we left for daycare and right when we got home but he had no interest. At night though?? Oh yes! I think I will be night nursing forEVER too. He was born at the end of September so I have another month before he is a year. Maybe there will be more changes by then. LO eats ALL day long and is 26 lbs at 11 months. Some people say infants no longer need to eat at night, but I don't think it is true. This guy seems to still be packing on the pounds still and needs the extra meals to support the growth.
  • LO will be a year Sept 12th and we're still happily BFing. She gets water with meals, but no other liquids except BM. I've been doing full time shiftwork for 3 weeks (thankfully over soon!) 13h away from LO each shift. She reverse cycles when I work, adding in 2 night feeds and only taking 3-7oz of pumped milk. On my days off, she nurses like 'normal' before naps and after afternoon nap, sleeps a long stretch. I think it's her way of reconnecting when I'm gone. Nice part is that I've cut back pumping. I just pump once, 5h into the shift. I get 7-8oz, so Ive been able to tuck away a couple extra bags for the freezer. I have no plans to wean. It's my last baby, and we're both happy with the way it's going. I also use a great metabolism BFing and can eat anything... I'm going to miss that! I'd like to make it til at least 2 (DD1 self weaned at 26mo).
