Wakey wakey during the night

So for the last week my LO has been increasingly waking up in the night. He's been on antibiotics for an ear infection and pneumonia that he got last week so I'm not sure if that's related. But I am going crazy. He actually used to be a good sleeper, when he was three months he was sleeping through the night and after about a month went back to waking only once or twice a night, which I can totally handle. But I'm not sure how to get him back on the sleeping bandwagon. Last night he was asleep in his crib by 9:00/9:30 but woke up wanting to nurse at 11:30, 1:30 (at which point I decided to bedshare and nurse), a few more times while we were bedsharing, then around 5 I put him back in his crib, then he woke up wide awake and ready to go at 6:30. Anyone else with a suddenly wakeful baby or tips to get him back to sleeping? I know I probably indulge his desire to nurse a little too much at night, but it's the only thing that gets him back down and I'm just exhausted.

I think him being sick/infection has a lot to do with it. My little one has a stuffy nose and he wants mommy extra at night. But it's completeky understandable. I think your routine will go back into play once baby is feeling 100% again. Just soothe him the best you can mama for now. Lol but my little guy still wakes every 2/3 hours to nurse so that's normal for me.

  • I am sure that him being sick threw him for a loop. But, C has been waking up every night a little after bed then through the night since 4.5 months old, it's killing me. Trying to get it figured out especially since she slept through the night before too. Hopefully sticking to routine will get you guys back on track.
  • Yep. The last week or two has been awful (she'll be 6 mo next week). She used to reliably sleep from 9p-2a+, but lately she's been waking up between 45 min and 2 hrs after I put her down. I'm dying! I don't know what to do, but I do know that I've had a headache for going on 6 days now. Ugh.

  • My LO was sleeping 9-7 but is now waking twice for feeds and then doesn't go back to sleep for ages after! She is wide awake! She is nearly 6 months, but didn't have a 4 month regression. I'm wondering if this is either a late regression or she is hungry as we get close to weaning time. I worry that my feeding her when she wakes that she will get used to it and carry on, but she seems hungry.
  • My little dude is also up more often when he isn't feeling well. In fact, while I'd say we are trending overall towards more good nights, we still have awful ones too. It's impossible to predict and isn't always related to visible illness. (Good for us is waking just 1-2x and terrible nights are 3+...sometimes as much as 6-7x!!)

I honestly just nurse him back to sleep because it's the fastest way to soothe him, and then I can go back to bed. On good nights where we're up 1-2x, he seems actually hungry. On bad nights, he just needs comfort. He's normally drowsy when I put him back in the crib, and able to put himself back to sleep. Key word: normally. There are nights when he can't, but I just try to suck it up and understand he's still little. Eventually his sleep will be more consistent! Right?? :)

Anyway, it sounds like you are doing the right thing with your LO and helping him through discomfort and illness. It won't ruin your routine! He probably wants to get back to normalcy too.
  • My LO is feeling fine. We bed share, but the past 2 weeks he's been waking up every couple hrs and it's getting exhausting. He's not wanting to eat every time, just awake... tossing and turning.
  • My lo has been waking alot more as well.can't figure out why but we co sleep so it's easy enough, he nurses back to sleep .He's been waking 3-4times a night for a few weeks now.He was waking 1-2times at most for months now but really it was to make sure I was still there.
  • I don't know what has happened to my good sleeper !!!! I don't know if her mind is in overdrive . She's trying to crawl so lately I find her on her hands and knees rocking and screaming all hours of the night . I guess it's like when she was learning to roll but wow we need to sleep !!!! She's also on a nap strike all of a sudden and she was a sure 2 good 2 hour nap a day girl but now I am Lucky if I get 1 for around 45 minutes to an hour . I hope she goes back to sleeping as well as she was before

This... is my life right now too!
  • @mrsc12414 if it's helpful info, I went to a class at our hospital with a sleep expert who mentioned babies will wake more during major movement milestones (rolling, crawling, standing, walking). She said they get so excited like we do before a big day and they just wake up and want to practice their new tricks lol. My LO is waking more right now bc she's teething. Boo!

Thank you I figured so as I've heard exactly what you said from others . It's just so hard :( I hope your baby gets so relief from the teething pain and you can get some rest soon
  • I was so completely against any form of CIO with DD1 (which resulted in her sleeping with us until she was almost 2.. Which was fine), but I think we may have to try it in some form with this LO. It has started taking me over an hour to get her to sleep at night, sometimes up to 2, just to have her wake up an hour later. Trying to get her to sleep has been making me super irritable some days :( I feel like a crappy mom for getting annoyed, but it's just rough sometimes.

  • I have no advice but it makes me feel so much less crazy knowing we aren't the only ones going through this
  • Same here mamas :) it's hard! I want sleep, but don't want to do CIO, but don't know what else to do.
