Glucose Test / Rhogam shot

*I used the search function to see if there were already posts about this and didn't see any in our birth month- my apologies if I missed it and am double posting*

I have my glucose test and rhogam shot scheduled for tomorrow and was just curious if anyone has done this already? Will I feel okay after or do you feel kinda crummy after drinking that straight sugar? Also, couldn't seem to find too much on the rhogam shot side effects (for me, not for baby).

Re: Glucose Test / Rhogam shot

  • I don't know anything about the shot but as for the glucose test it seems to be very individual. I felt really sick during and after until I ate/got some water. A couple times while waiting I thought I was going to throw up. People at the hospital kept offering me a cold cloth, a fan and place to lay down.
Some other people are champs! They seem to power through and have no issues at all. I think it's the whole point of the test to see how your body processes and breaks down the sugar.

  • I have already had one rhogam shot and I will be getting another one along with my GD test on 9/6. I had no side effects from my first shot but I was there forever waiting on the lab. They first have to test your blood to confirm you need it and then they have to make the shot from your blood. Depending on how backed up the lab is be prepared to wait. I was in LD triage for 5 hours
  • No input on rhogam, but with the GD test last time I felt mildly nauseous and just "icky" much of the rest of the day. Not anything major that really interfered, just kind of "off".

  • The glucose test has always made me feel just crummy during and after. I've only done the 1 hour one before and never had to do a 3 hour. Might be a wise idea to pack a high protein snack for after the test, just in case. But, like @kristah2 mentioned, some women have no problems with it.
  • Had my GD test a week ago and I felt fine before, during and after. No input on rhogam.
  • I had glucose test and Rhogam shot yesterday.
After drinking the syrup, I did feel a bit hot/sweaty, but not terrible. It doesn't taste all that bad either.
I then went right into my doctor's appointment and had the Rhogam shot (the nurse made me the most nervous because she kept telling me about the diameter size & length of the needle, but it wasn't bad at all).
After my appointment, I still had 30mins to wait for the blood draw, so I was able to calm my nerves a bit and just hang out. After I got done and home, I didn't feel great (kind of tired/crappy) and did actually go to bed on the early side.
So, I think you'll be OK, just try not to plan to run a bunch of errands or do too much afterwards, maybe?
    Good luck!
I just saw my results earlier and I passed the test. Phew.
  • Thanks @itsjustasetup! I was debating on coming into work after but I'm thinking it may be better to just rest (oh darn :)). Glad to hear the shot wasn't too bad- i seem to have no mommy friends who have a negative blood type and have experienced it so I appreciate your input!

  • I was feeling super crappy all morning. I decided to take my blood sugar and it was 181! Highest it had ever been, even though I didn't feel like what I ate for.breakfast justified the spike. All day I felt dizzy and shitty so I called my OB and they had me come in. Instead of waiting till 28w (I'm 26+4 today) they had me.do the glucose test since I'm pretty sure I have GD. The drink was ok until the last gulp and I almost barfed everywhere. I still feel like crap but am.drinking as much water as I can stand. I guess we will see the official status tomorrow or so. Ugh.
  • I've had two Rhogams and they didn't feel like anything, other than awkward when you drop trousers for a shot in the butt. Though I've also always felt fine after the GD test. I really recommend eating before the test unless otherwise instructed; you're never going to feel okay processing sugar on an empty stomach.

    Good luck!

  • I'm about 2-3 hours post test and for anyone else looking at how they feel- I feel pretty crummy. The shots were fine (a little sting but nothing bad) but the "juice" is not treating me well. Almost vomited trying to chug it (had to channel my college days to get it down haha) and now am having the "digestive issues" common side effect. So glad I took the whole day off work!
  • I so don't want to have stomach issues during or after the test. I have IBS already and it will just ruin my whole day.
  • Yesteday I had my third Rhogam shot (had emergency ones at 8 and 24 weeks too) and my second glucose test (my first was around 18 weeks, when I noticed I felt sick after sugary foods).

Anyway, the Rhogam shot does hurt going in, but no effects after. I got hot and nauseated from the glucose drink. It might have hit me harder than most because I make my appointments first thing in the morning, so I hadn't eaten since dinner the evening before. I felt fine after getting home and eating something with fat and protein.
  • I didn't have the shot but i had the glucose test. It made me feel really nauseous and i couldn't keep it down after 40 minutes. They said when that happens they either reschedule for another day or just treat me as if i had diabetes.

The drink itself didn't taste too bad- i got orange. But it was just the highly concentrated sugar content that got me.

I ended up choosing for them to treat me like i have diabetes.

Good luck with your test! Hope it was better than mine :)
  • No advice on the shot but the glucose test was different for me for both my pregnancies. Last time, I felt really faint and terrible afterwards, even after eating 2 bananas. This time around, I felt perfectly fine and didn't even have a banana or anything afterwards (I wasn't planning on taking the test that day so I didn't bring any food for after).

  • I've gotten the rhogam shot twice now, both times in my arm. The easiest shot I've ever gotten. No soreness the next day at all!
  • Did my GD test this AM. Feeling ok right now. Had the option of the lemon-lime drink - SOOOOO much better than orange. It tasted like flat Sprite.

  • I go in for my 4th rhogam next week (lots of emergency shots so far) I've never noticed any reaction, other than the injection site is a little sore the rest of the day.
  • The 1 hour GD drink wasn't too bad. I was able to down it all at once. I thought the same could be done with the 3 hour, and it was terrible. I almost puked the whole 3 hours after drinking it. I literally never want orange flavored anything ever again.
Also I didn't do the rhogam shot. One good thing about being O+ I guess?
