Sippy Cup Adventures

I went to target and got my LO the Munchkin 360 cup since he likes "drinking" from my cup. I plan on trying within the next 2 weeks when he hits 7 months even though the cup says 6+ Have you ladies started using sippy cups? If so, what kind? Would you recommend it? If not, when do you plan on starting?

Re: Sippy Cup Adventures

  • I've been giving babygirl a sippy cup when she's in her high chair eating solids . Usually she just plays with it. Yesterday she took a few sips of the water . We've used a gerber sippy because it's what I had on hand (received it in a registery gift bag I think) I'll probably try harder in the next few months . She's ebf and only takes two bottles a week when I'm at work at night two days a week

  • I tried that sippy cup with my third child and she didn't like it. With the one I had you had to push down with the mouth to get anything to come out. My fourth baby is only EBF and hasn't even tried a bottle. So I'm honestly not sure when I'll introduce a sippy cup. I always just get any kind at the store. I just make sure they are sturdy and easy to clean.
  • In the next week or so I will start introducing a little when I give her food. I use Avent bottles and they have training cups with the bottle nipples so they can get the feel of it. My pedi said I can give her a little water so I will put some water in there for her try.

  • I don't know what the US recommendations are, but in the UK, it is recommended to use an open cup without a spout at all. To help with teeth hygiene etc. So I'm looking at getting the munchkin cup or one something similar for when out and about.

At home, I'm using a 'doidy cup'. Dont know if you have them in the US, but it's a slanted cup so LO can see what they're drinking and not over tip it. My LO loves it! She is EBF, but I expressed some milk in it to help her get the idea of drinking.
  • Rylee has been exclusively breastfed until we recently started introducing solids. The day before she turned 6 months we tried one of the munchkin straw sippy cups and she's been using it ever since! I was shocked that she figured it out in about 5 minutes. She's never been a fan of bottles so I thought sippy cups were going to be a lot more of a battle.
  • I have the one you bought as well as tommee tippee sippy cups with spouts and a dollar store Mickey Mouse cheap plastic sippy cup with a spout. Three guesses which one she loves. Yep. The dollar store one (it was a gift). It's lightweight and easy for her to grasp the handles. Funny how the fancier pricier cups just don't function as well. I think with the one you bought they may need top teeth for it to really function well. DD tried to gum it but was unsuccessful in getting the water out which made her pretty angry. She sips from our glasses too at times which has created a bad obsession lol
  • We tried one of those spoutless cups for our toddler about 6 months ago (she was 2.5 yo) and she didn't like it at all. I decided to try and sip water from it myself and it was pretty hard to get just a tiny sip out. Needless to say those cups just sit in the cupboard unused, also the cups we had did leak (it was a different brand then the one you have pictured). I will be using a soft spouted sippy with handles to start and just gradually introduce different types of cups (straw, hard spouts, no spouts like the oxo training cup) pretty much whatever the grocery store has on hand lol.
  • After trying several things, we used a hard plastic flip top soppy (Green Sprouts brand, but I don't know that they make the same model anymore?). We wanted to make sure it was something easy to clean. I feel like we didn't give water until after 9-ish months, though? I can't remember. I'll have to ask her doctor when an "ok" time is, but I'm positive we waited until DD1 was sitting up independently (like on the floor), if not later.

The only one I've bought so far is a Nuk Gerber graduate trainer sippy cup. I give him water when he sits in his high chair and for car rides. It doesn't leak, but he hasn't really taken to it and drank from it either.  He does like to hold it and chew on the spout and the handles.
  • My LO loves playing with his sippy cup, but he doesn't really drink from it yet. We have a cheap one from the grocery store.
  • We are in Canada and I ordered doidy cups online for my first son 5 years ago.

They were awesome for giving smoothies when he was about 7 months old.

I still have them and will be using them for our newest baby boy, he will be 7 months on Sept 11th, so we will try them soon.

  • I have the munchkin 360 and have heard great things about it. I just bought the Nuby cups with handles tonight. I have not tried either one yet though, but will start tomorrow!

Has anyone had luck getting baby to drink straight from a cup? Our doctor gave the ok today to give her some since she's had some constipation issues (possibly due to a little dehydration while with my mom on these really hot days), but recommended going straight for a cup if possible. I think he recommended the same with DD1, but she never went for it (preferred sippy, then straw cup).

  • @VitaLuna
My LO drinks out of a regular cup much better than a sippy cup. I give him drinks of my water and he does great. He may skip the sippy and just go straight into cups after nursing but we'll see
  • We've started introducing them (6 months old). We got the Philips avent ones because the tops work with our bottles and I didn't want 100 extra baby items in my cabinets. So far she is great at holding it and putting the spout right in her mouth. Just working on not drinking too much and the basically having it all dribble out of her mouth. Once she gets better at it we'll start putting breastmilk in it
  • @ashton2190 I feel you on the baby items! We're obviously a long way off, but I can't wait to be done with bottles and pump parts. I just went through DD1s stuff and tossed a ton of things, too (replaced all her plastic silverware with one set of stainless, got rid of all the snack containers, etc).

  • @VitaLuna my LO always reaches for my cup when I'm drinking I've given him water from my cup and he drinks just fine. I thought getting the sippy cup without a spout would help him get the hang. All he does is play with it not really drinking anything.
  • We started water 2days ago w one of the "elmo"cups w the handles on side.He hasn't gotten the hang of holding it yet but throws it alot and likes COLD water!!
