Bed Rest check-in?

I just got put on bed rest because my cervix is too short. Its gone from 4.3 cm to 2.3 cm in just over one month. Doctor is concerned and referred me to a high risk OB.
I'm really struggling with this so I wanted to reach out to see if others have been put on bed rest yet and how you are coping with it. Its partly the fact that I like my job (I'm a teacher and school just started yesterday!!! ugh!!) and partly that I am no good at laying around the house with my feet up all day long. Can we use this thread like a check-in? How are you coping with not working, not being able to cook/clean/do anything, and what are you doing all day?

Re: Bed Rest check-in?

  • Im sorry. :(

I'm not on bedrest yet but my Dr has said it's a high possibility at 28 weeks. I think @Kate08Young is at least on partial bedrest?

Were you put on strict bedrest or is some activity ok?

  • I was on partial bed rest with my first. I feel for you! Netflix, blogging or reading them, calling friends you haven't spoke to in awhile, sewing or knitting, and Pinterest. Those were my go to. Do your best to take it easy and remind yourself that this is you being strong, even though it might feel like it's you being lazy. You resting is what's best for your LO. Wish you the best!

I am this exactly. I'm on 'modified bedrest' whatever the F that means. My cervix was .8 cm at my 21w AS, and 2 days later at the MFM (high risk OB/surgeon) it was a .6 . So I haven't even gotten to do anything with getting ready for the school year. I did get to go to all the pre-student PD, but its been really hard.

So far I have: netflix-ed until I feel like I have bedsores coming, found new patterns to knit and crochet, chasing/entertaining my 1yo, and I have spent IDK how many hours on forums and trying to 'perfect' my lesson plans for when I get back.

This week I was lucky enough to get a change of scenery by visiting my parents. It has been a long month at home, and if I had to watch my students/neighbors get on the school bus everyday I would have lost what little sanity I have left.

  • Also, @jandd2014 I am sorry that you are having this issue as well. It sucks. It sucks so much I cry almost daily because I am losing my mind, but I need to do it for baby girl. You are going to make this look easy. You will be a wonderful mother, I can tell, because you are already trying to figure out how to make this horrible situation bearable.

  • Thanks for the encouragement ladies! Its nice to know I'm not the only one, even though it sucks for all of us.
@Kate08Young I'm also on "modified bed rest" although it seems pretty restricting to me. I'm supposed to lay around pretty much all day except for ten minutes out of every hour when I can get up to go to the bathroom or get something to eat. No going to work, no cooking/cleaning/laundry, etc, no sex. My doctor is hoping I make it to 32 weeks, so I'm looking at (hopefully) 7+ weeks of bed rest. I will just have to keep reminding myself why I'm doing this. Luckily, we have a large support system around us and several people have already offered to help with whatever we need. It's hard for DH and I to accept help, so that's something we will have to work on being ok with. But I am very grateful we have such supportive family, friends, and coworkers.

  • So sorry you guys are dealing with this. I spent two and a half months on bedrest in the first trimester with HG. It really can get you down. I watched a lot of movies, found a few fun phone games, and created my baby registry. It helped having my snuggly cats, too! I also set up regular phone calls with friends and family to help break up the day.

On the days it was really bad I just tried to remind myself it would end since the baby has to be born! Luckily, the really bad days came and went and most the time I was more bored than anything.

If you run out if Netflix there's always hulu and amazon prime streaming, too. Hang in there. So sorry again you guys are dealing with this.
  • How quickly did this happen? Hang in there, and download lots of books and there's always Netflix!

I was on bed rest for two weeks starting when I was 11 weeks since I had a lot of bleeding from my cervix. I was told after two weeks I could go back to work, but no walking longer than 15 minutes, and no sex.

@jandd2014 see my modified bedrest is I'm allowed to go to meeting/movies/cards because it's walk in then sit. I can wrestle my 1 yo, but cant stand to cook/clean/do dishes. It's so weird and arbitrary what we are allowed and not allowed to do.

  • Oh man, I'm sorry. That's not easy. I'm not on bed rest, but my belly button has gone back to full on herniated and I feel like my stomach is going to split in half. The only thing that helps is resting...
There is a list of things that I always want to do, but don't find the sit down time for. You don't have to do any of these, but here are some ideas: learn how to crochet, or knit! make some charcoal drawings, get to my giant bag of clothes that need a patch/sew/button replaced, paint my nails all fancy, read up on my SpEd research materials, learn how to paint with acrylics (a tiny canvas you can hold in your hand), send emails to old friends that I haven't seen in a long time, and do some crafty things for baby's room.
Keep us posted, take care of yourself and your baby!

  • @karabearrr this happened very suddenly! I wasn't having any symptoms.
We had a follow up anatomy scan yesterday to recheck some measurements of Baby's stomach. There is still a concern there, but the bigger concern the tech noted was that my cervix has lost 2 cm in about one month and has started to funnel. She finished the scan and sent us straight to labor and delivery to get checked out. Luckily my regular OB was the on call doctor yesterday. She put me on bed rest, gave me a prescription for a progesterone cream and a referral to a high risk OB. She said I should be on bed rest until I see what the high risk OB says, which will hopefully be in the next 2-3 weeks. The note she wrote me for work is for one month. She basically told me every day that I can keep Baby in me is another day that her chances of surviving increase because she does not expect me to make it to full term.

  • @jandd2014 Did they check your length both ASs with an transvaginal scan?  That is the only way to get an accurate measurement of the cervix. If they didn't, it might not be as bad as it seems.

Also every day is 1 less day of NICU time. Every 2 weeks (28,30,32) is a great milestone to shoot for. My OB practice has friendly (I am ok with it) bets on how long I will make it. I think I'll make 36w, but not past that.

  • They checked externally at the scan in July, but I guess at that time there wasn't a concern. Yesterday she noticed it first externally, finished all her other measurements, and then did the transvaginal one. My cervix was a few millimeters shorter on the internal than it was on the external. I think what has the doctor most concerned is how quickly I went from measuring ok to not ok, and what's going to happen if I can't slow it down. I'm trying to wrap my head around the very real likelihood that Baby will spend some time in the NICU but I will do everything I can every day to make it so she has to spend one less day there, like you said.

  • I'm not on bed rest with the pregnancy, but I've been put on on bed rest with all of my other pregnancies.  Last year, I was in the hospital for four weeks before having my son at 35 weeks.  Like you, I had a cervix that shortened suddenly, but I also had really high blood pressure readings.  With this pregnancy, I have my cervical length checked every other week to make sure it's measuring properly.  I know it's tough, but you can do it and it's well worth the end result!  Netflix and believe it or not coloring helps!

Stay resting, then! Gravity is not your friend, keep that baby in! ;) Do you have to wait so long to see the high risk OB or can you go in sooner?

  • Don't make fun of me, but is there any way you could get into a video game? This is my number one way to get myself to veg. There are some really long entertaining games out there that can keep you entertained for months no joke!
  • @whitneyp26 That is something I hadn't considered. Depending on how long it takes to finish my 'how to' for dummies vids on our software updates I will check into that.

  • Thanks for the suggestions!
My BFF's mom offered to play Words with Friends with me (she's retired and has time during the day). DH suggested a game too. We've played NBA together and I used to play Crash Team Racing (on PS1 haha) all the time. We just got a new PS4 and only have a couple of DH's games that I dont really like. But yes, I could get into a game. Day two, and I'm tired of watching TV. I may spend tomorrow looking for a game to get into! I also pulled out the makings of our wedding scrapbook that I never got around too. And I guess I'll work on putting together my portfolio to clear my teaching credential since I finally have some time. MIL brought me some books too. I have some things I could do, but it's hard when I would rather be at work or puttering around the house.
