Hair coloring?

What's the word on the OB street on dyeing your hair? Is it safe? My hair's a hot mess right now.

Re: Hair coloring?

  • Yes, you can color your hair. For the least amount of chemicals see a stylist. Professional color is held to a high standard.

  • Didn't ask my OB about it but from some of the articles I read it said best not in first tri. After that it seemed better to do highlights rather than all over.

None of that is truth but it makes people feel better to wait a lot of the time. Smells are the most obnoxious part in first tri.

  • I touched up my roots about 5 weeks ago and will be doing high lights next week. I know a lot of pregnant women who have dyed their hair and I have talked with my hair stylist before and she says if it was that dangerous then no stylist would be working while pregnant.
  • I went for it, with a stylist in a salon. Your hair can absorb differently than it used to, so ask for a test strand before going bananas. I've been told tho that in terms of safety it's fine. :)
    Me: 30, mild DOR
    Him: 31, totes fine.

  • I'm going to keep on keeping on. I can't give up coloring my hair. It's growing like crazy and shit is getting real with the gray. We cover ourselves in chemicals every day, so I'm not going to feel too badly about having my hair dyed every six weeks.

  • I do ammonia free, low peroxide gloss.  I think this is one of those things that has been exaggerated over the years and is overblown.  I spoke to my stylist about it (who I have had a relationship with for 13 years and who has had 2 successful pregnancies while working with all this stuff) and we agree that it's nbd.  I'll probably speak w/my OB since I'm seeing them Thursday but I anticipate a "no problem" response.
  • My OB said hold off until after the first trimester. My roots are crazy!!! Luckily I will be able to go before the first day of school. :)

  • 5th babe and I've never given up coloring/touching up my hair. I just make sure it's a well ventilated room.
  • As long as you aren't doing it in someone's basement or somewhere with no ventilation  you'll be fine. The smells are too much for me in first trimester but that's more of a personal preference.
  • Confession: I did a touch up at 8 weeks, going again Sept 1. Still a healthy baby.
  • Good ventilation and your fine like many other posters have said.
I personally wait out the first 12 weeks since I do it myself and I though we have vents in our bathroom I don't think its SUPER ventilated like I would like at most times with my LO's running around so while pregnant I try to choose a day that's not so cold to open more windows near the bathroom I am gonna use along with keeping the vents on in there.  And there is always the warning that the color may not be true to form b/c of all the hormones but I don't know that to be accurate (so far) and haven't heard of anyone that anything strange has happened.

  • All good points. I was ready to grow out my lowlights anyway my last appointment so I didn't look into it too much. I'm sure if you're at a reputable salon and it's ventilated you're good to go.

  • I highlighted and colored my roots at about 8 weeks. Then I bought DH a book about being a first time dad, and he came home from reading it and said "oh, it also says no hair coloring, so..."  Sorry, honey, been there, done that.

But it was well ventilated.  :)

  • It sounds like the consensus is that this is safe during pregnancy...does anyone have any thoughts on doing it for the first time while pregnant?

I started getting gray hairs over the past year--my hair stylist didn't think there was enough gray for it to be worth it to cover it.  But since getting pregnant I've had the lovely side effect of increased, instead of decreased, shedding, which has made my hair look dramatically more gray (bc the gray hair tends to stick around and the regular hair is the stuff falling out).  I feel like this combined with getting hugely pregnant/gaining weight is not going to be amazing for my self esteem and coloring my hair might make me feel good about myself. But I don't know if I'll have some sort of reaction because somehow I've gone my whole life without ever dyeing my hair.  Any thoughts?

They can do a swab test on your inner arm the day before your appt to see if you will have a reaction.
