Diaper bag

Since I haven't seen this anywhere on this board yet and I'm an over planner..

Whats going in(or already in) your diaper bag?

STMs, what do you recommend?

  • Piggybacking on this has there been a "what's on your registry" thread? I didn't see one in a search
  • I feel like I was a pretty minimal packer, but that may not necessarily be true. Here are some things I always had on hand:

    Muslin blanket
    nursing cover
    saline wipes
    hand sanitizer
diaper cream (I used the Honest healing balm, but it wasn't anything to write home about)
Tylenol and Benadryl (my daughter had a reaction to a yogurt while visiting a friend, after a frantic trip to Walgreens, I always keep a little med kit in my car for emergencies)
    extra outfit
    wetbag to store soiled outfit
    personal items for me
a little card that had emergency contact info on it (DH and my #'s and her medical insurance info)
    And eventually snacks...so many snacks!

  • For hospital (but it's Canada so may be different).  They have diapers, wipes, etc to use.    So pretty much, a few sleepers, a cute going home outfit, a couple of burp cloths, a nursing cover, nursing pads, (I'd probably recommend nipple cream for FTM's), and a few diapers, and wipes for coming home.

I also packed a labour bag and a bag for me.

Everyday:  a couple cloth diapers, an emergency disposable, wipes, snacks, toys, keys, purse, things I need, camera, cell phone, usually a few hair clips, occasionally a candy,  Everyday FOR BABY:  a spare outfit or 2 and a burp cloth, nursing cover, a few more diapers, maybe a blanket, warmer clothes maybe, socks (because my friends like my kids to wear them).  Probably a few more random things depending on the day, weather, and outing.

On a related note, I learned with my first kid to start to get going out the door a minimum of 15 minutes prior to needing to leave.   And if I had about 30 mins to spare. I would start getting ready anyway and do a couple of extra nice to have done tasks...

  • @MrsBigTime my husband who already has 3 kids (this is my first) swears by Boudreaux's Butt paste. They sell it everywhere. Warrants giving it a try.

It's good! I think it smells nice, too, ha! We only ever had diaper rash when my girl was teething (holy moly it was so bad!) and for that I swear by Ostomy powder, but it's hard to find. I'm a nurse so I have access to it. I don't know what exactly is in it, but it's amazing!

I'm a big fan of Desitin. Nothing else worked for DD and she was prone to diaper rashes.
  • Have any of y'all used aquaphor? It had good reviews on babies r us and people said their baby's diaper rash healed within hours.. So I registered, but also registered for baby mantra diaper cream
  • Things I always carry in my diaper bag:
    -Diapers & wipes, duh
-Diaper cream (Boudreax's Butt Paste and Burt's Bees work best for my DS)
-Fold-up changing pad (both of my diaper bags came with one)
    -A couple small toys
-Tylenol and thermometer, just in case
    -Change of clothes for him
    -Hand sanitizer
    -Lysol wipes (travel size)
    -Sunscreen
-Snacks! Even if I think we won't need them lol
-For me - wallet, water bottle, chapstick

I used to always carry a swaddle or other small, lightweight blanket, but now that he's older I don't really find much use for it. I still always keep one in my car though.
  • @ACarullo, aquaphor is a great barrier (keeps moisture from getting to the skin) so would be good at preventing diaper rash in the first place. But it doesn't have the healing ingredients a lot of actual diaper rash creams have in them.
  • Ohh okay! Well I'm sure someone will grab some butt paste for me because everyone seems to love that brand :)
  • I was given a helpful tip0 which sounded so obvious...rather than carrying a big ass diaper bag with everything but the kitchen sink in it, opt for a smaller bag, or even your purse, and keep a Rubbermaid container or something similar in your car full of diapers, wipes, additional outfits, etc. That way you won't be overloaded, and you'll always be ready for anything big and major (and likely smelly lol)
  • Things I always keep in the diaper bag for a newborn-
JJ Cole changing clutch (I love this thing!) stocked with diapers, wipes, and A&D
Munchkin Arm & Hammer diaper bags for soiled diapers or clothes
A change of clothes for baby
    Hand sanitizer
    Boogie wipes and tissues
    Muslin blanket
    Nursing cover
    Burp cloths
An extra paci or two and paci clip
    Paci wipes
    A toy or two
Stuff for me- wallet, phone, chapstick, bottle of water, a snack

  • I am a huge fan of Dr. Smiths Diaper ointment. The pediatric nurse recommended it when it seemed desitin was too rough on her skin and the butt paste didn't seem to make a difference.  It seemed to clear up rashes overnight when put on right away. It also comes in a spray so i don't have to get it on my fingers.Love it!

As far as diaper bags. Mine just turned into a catch all mess. I'm going to buy some water proof pouches to try to keep things straight. One for diapering, one for clothes, one for toddler, one for little toys...We will see if that helps. Doubt it though. I'm a disorganized person who wants so badly to be organized :(

This works reasonably well if you travel most places by car. But...you'll want the minimums with you wherever you go. You don't want to find yourself stuck in a bathroom with a poop-covered child and all your supplies outside in the cold, trying to McGuyver a diaper out of toilet paper.

I agree. It's a great idea to keep a small tote in your car with all of those things, but you're definitely going to want a diaper bag with you at all times too. I've had two diaper bags and neither of them are very big and I definitely don't carry "everything and the kitchen sink" in it. They're honestly not any bigger than many of my other purses. If you're in the middle of a public place and have a blowout or other emergency, getting to your car will most likely not be easy or convenient.
