Terrified of listeria

I am sorry if this sounds uneducated, but I am so worried about contracting listeria and not having symptoms! In the very beginning (week 3-4) I ate some cold leftovers from my fridge (chicken and avocado) and I also have eaten grape leaves and olives from an olive bar at my grocery store (the items were cold and stored on ice). I drive around for work all day so I do not have easy access to hot food and have eaten cold leftovers a few times. Maybe I sound paranoid but could I request to be tested for listeria? Just to be on the safe side? Thanks for your help!

Re: Terrified of listeria

  • If you avoided all the foods that are suceptible to listeria, you'd starve. Just don't eat anything that seems questionable from a food storage standpoint and you'll be fine. Like PP said, you'd know if you had listeria. And try to relax, stress isn't good for you or your baby either. It's going to be a looong pregnancy otherwise.

  • ^^What they said. Plus, if that chicken was something you cooked in your own kitchen and didn't get sick the first time, its fine the second time. And you'd know if you had listeria.

Don't live your pregnancy in a bubble. Just use your common sense, and if things look sketchy, avoid it.

  • What everyone else said. And if you had listeria, you would most likely know. Avoid questionable food sorces, and if you plan on eating cold left overs, eat them right away, dont leave them out or in the car etc thats when bacteria can grow.
