Baby Gear Question - Video Monitors

We have a Motorola BRU exclusive monitor currently but they discontinued that style and of course, upgraded the model. So, I can no longer buy another camera to go with the parent unit. The Motorola was okay, but I'm looking into different options now and wonder if any other STM+s have any good camera recs for multiple rooms.

I don't really have any specific criteria that I'm looking for - although I did notice some had split screen view which was a cool idea. Can you HEAR both rooms at the same time then??

Re: Baby Gear Question - Video Monitors

  • I don't remember what brand we had but the feature I looked for was being able to talk back over the monitor. My kids are spaced out and we don't really use a monitor by the time they're a year old so I don't have any experience with the split screen.

  • I used the Summer Infant Best View monitor and there was an option for two cameras, our dd is 5 though so we won't need a second camera.

  • (Following as a FTM) we registered for the Summer Infant with 2 cameras. I believe it toggles between the rooms, and it's not connected to WiFi since some of those hacking issues creep me out.

My friend uses this one too and her son will be five in a few months and still uses it so she can check on him while he's playing in his room and she's down in their main living area. This is the one I want to look into so we can setup one in playroom thats in our basement.

  • I was looking into the SIBV monitors too. I also looked at the upgraded Motorola BRU one even though I'm irritated about it lol. My current Motorola lets you talk back to them too - although a new feature they added to the upgrade was room temperature which I thought was neat.
  • Can you just buy another monitor and use both ? I think that's what I'm going to do because even though mine (Samsung) uses multiple cameras, having to switch between them isn't ideal for me. I gotta be able to spy on both at once. :) I'm looking for a split screen also but if I can't find something good I'll just use the two separate cameras and monitors.

I mean I guess I could but I would be worried about interference between the monitors. My monitor already is testy when we have any devices running near it. Plus two cords to take up plugs at night and two cords for the cat to chew on haha. That's why I liked the idea of split screen to watch both at once. Although most do a scanning feature that would suffice.
  • I tried using two summer infant ones at the same time and the interference was bad.

Gotcha. Ideally I want a split screen too but I haven't even thought about looking into it. Ah so much to think about !
  • This thread made me think of something. I wonder if it would be smart to have one thread (maybe pinned) dedicated to baby gear. Where we can ask about specific stuff and get other mom's opinions good AND bad. WDYT?

I use a net cam from Verizon. I can look in from anywhere and talk back. It's password protected. I love it because even when I'm out of the house I can still check in and see how the kids are sleeping.

    Totally agree!
  • We had bad luck with both Summer Infant and iBaby. The iBaby was awesome at first because I love using my phone as a monitor. And I used it for our puppies when we got them and left them during the day haha. But it was glitchy, so I'm going to be looking for a new brand too!

Does anyone have a Nest cam? That's what DH wants.

I had to think a second before I posted like "do they have this thread already?" Haha. It would be a good idea! Especially since soon people will start creating registries.

I think we had one early on but it's worth revisiting now.
  • I had/have a summer infant best view that can add up to 4 cameras and is touch screen.  Great panorama ability and can talk thru camera..... Except when you crack the screen and the touch screen doesn't work anymore!  Now I have 4 cameras and a non-functional base.  I have been reading up in Baby Bargains in what to get this time.  We honestly don't use any monitors with our older kids at this point so just need something for this kid.  Infant optics is recommended if not going the camera via wifi to iPad/phone route.

  • We have a foscam and we LOVE it... FFTC - we have two one in DD room and one in the living room and I check on what DH is doing when I leave him at home with DD.

I want to get 2 more, one for the playroom and one for this baby's room.

  • I think I'm the only person ever that didn't use a video monitor.
DD slept attached to me for the first 8 months though....
we just used a basic sound monitor and probably will for this one.

I didn't use it for the infant phase either because she slept with me for the first year. I used it more when she was a toddler and constantly climbing out of bed and not going to sleep!!

I also have no intention of using a video monitor, we are getting a regular audio monitor.

  • @Gingersnap we lived with my parents while our house was being built and I was in the basement and my two year old was in a queen bed on the top floor so we had one so I could yell at her to get back in bed at 5am because she was going in to my parents room and waking them up lol.
