Baby slings/carriers

I searched this and found a baby carrying post but it was more of "do you wear while pregnant" so I am asking for input.

What type of sling/wrap/carrier do you use? I have a boba wrap but do not feel it is convenient after about 15 lbs as it is so stretchy. I have heard a lot of good things about woven wraps and the ring sling. Any advice?

Re: Baby slings/carriers

  • I really liked my Moby wrap when DS was tiny and plan to use it again this time. Then the Ergo when baby gets a little bigger.

  • I'm interested in the JJ Cole agility carrier but haven't found any reviews on it. Maybe it is something you might also be interested in.

I used a K'tan when DS was an infant and loved it, but he outgrew it pretty quickly. I also had a mei-tai, which wasn't great for long periods of baby wearing, but was compact enough to keep in the diaper bag or car. I used a Becco Gemini from about 6-18 months and it was great.

The Tula is supposed to be the Cadillac of carriers. I may spring for one this time since we don't have to buy many big items - just to see what all the fuss is about, lol.

  • I loved my moby for my DD. I'll be using it this time too.
I really want a Tula ring sling and an Ergo with an infant insert. I work from May-Oct outdoors on the weekends and baby will be in tow. I'm hoping to be able to bf in a carrier.
  • I love my Moby for when baby is just wee little one. After that I have my Ergo. I do enjoy my Ergo. I do have a question though should you repurchase a Ergo is it fine that it's used? Probably a dumb question but I wear mine so often wondered if it's wise to buy another one.

  • People get all excited by the (very nice) patterns of the Tulas. Yes they're very similar to the Ergo. But they do make ring slings and woven wraps too. The fabric is amazing and can get so soft over time.
  • Kinderpacks are from the gods. Ring slings are great too from newborn through toddler :)

The Tula is like an ergo in the fact that it is a soft structured carrier.  However, the Tula is less bulky and easier to adjust.  If you are not very tall a Tula will be more comfortable.  An Ergo is an awesome option, but in my opinion the Tula is much better. I wore my toddler all through my last pregnancy for hours using a Tula comfortably.

Both options require a newborn insert.  People do the roll the blanket under the butt trick, but forget the insert is also about stabilizing the baby securely.  If I didn't wrap newborns I would get an insert.  I do not use SSCs until they have neck control.
  • Tula all the way.   Loved my Tula with my DS.  If we are having a girl going to spring for a cute girl pattern with the infant insert   I also have a Sakura Bloom ring sling but  could never get comfortable with it and currently have that one out on loan with a friend.

Is there a reason you feel like you need a new one? An Ergo is a high-quality carrier and is built to last. Look it over, check all the seams; unless you see obvious structural damage, there's no reason to buy a new one. The one I bought for this baby is used.

  • Love a stretchy wrap for when a little squish. I loved my RS for quick up and downs and used my SSC for other times. I love my Lenny lamb SSC and used a tula as well. I tired wrapping but it wasn't for me so I am converting my wrap into a SSC from Bamberoo for this new squish.

Only because I use this one so often. Nothing's wrong with it. Perhaps I'm just looking for a reason to purchase a new one.

  • Loved using both the K'tan and the Beco Gemini.  Both are easy to wash.  I love how the Beco doesn't require an insert and can be worn with the baby facing out.

  • I love my Moby and wore it until little one was 6 months and I could also do a front cary. There are tons of different ways to wrap it. Then I switched to the Ergo. I love this one because you can also do a hip or back carry and it has tons of support that uses your hips not your shoulders. It was also our savior on many occasions getting him to sleep while traveling or out of town. My guy is 23 months and my hubby and I can still carry him on our backs. He prefers to walk these days though and since I am pregnant I prefer the stroller!!

    This is my answer exactly.

Though I know plenty of Tula lovers out there.
  • I have ring slings, wraps, an ergo, a Tula, and have tried several other carriers. I love different ones at different stages but ring slings are my absolute favorite for the first few months. I love wrapping for the middle stages 6-12 months and my Tula has been a life saver since my almost 2 year old was 1.  My dd still goes in the Tula regularly so I plan on getting a toddler Tula in the next few months.
  • I have a woven wrap addiction. It's just my personal preference when it comes to babywearing. So many different ways you can wear your child with wovens, and you can use wovens from new born to toddlers. I have a ssc lenny lamb.. And i regret buying it because im just not a ssc mom.  And with wovens.. I feel the babys weight is evenly distributed and its more comfort on me.. Specially with carries that have chest passes like a double hammock, and waist and chest belts. Thats just what i prefer

  • @Sekerambo and other ring sling lovers, what do you love about them? I'm intrigued but they intimidate me. I often see babies looking so smooshed in there and I've heard some claims they're not safe.

  • @bananers - ring slings, just like any baby carrier, are completely safe as long as they are used properly.  Years ago people would lay baby in the sling instead of keeping the baby upright, in a similar position as a ssc.  Laying them in the sling could lead to baby not being able to breath properly.  The reason I love them is they are quick and easy to use.  They are lighter than most carriers and way less complicated than wraps. A hip carry (when baby is sitting on their own) in a ring sling is easy and way less complicated than hip carries in other carriers. They are also great for toddlers who want to be up and down a lot.  I absolutely love my other carriers and wraps but I would take a ring sling over any other type for the newborn stage.
It may take a time or two to get the hang of it but if you google babywearing Faith she has a great videos on YouTube.
  • Thanks, @Sekerambo! I think it was the laying down position that looked so smooshed. I'll check out baby wearing Faith!

  • I know I'm rehashing this from way back when but I'm currently researching on types/brands of ring slings. I am currently looking at Wildbird ring sling as my Boba wrap (gifted to us) is so heavy and hot in this weather.

Also eyeing Tula ring sling but most of them are sold out and price is...way up there!
  • Omg I am seriously lame when it comes to using my moby wrap.  Me and DH were trying to wrap it on me the other night and could not figure out how to get baby in there safe and secure.  How do you fold it in half?! It kept getting all twisted up

  • I love our Bijou Wear ring sling! This one was $135, so cheaper than Tula. Although I do have a Tula woven wrap for different carries.
Ring slings are so easy to put baby in and out. I love baby wearing!!
  • Exactly why I want to switch to a ring sling! Boba wrap is good quality but IMO, it takes a while to tie it around you and when you have a crying baby...the last thing you want to do is wrap it around your hips, over your shoulders...and I can go on and on and still not be done wrapping it around me!
  • @no more miss! Do you feel comfortable going hands-free with the ring sling? I have the Baby K'Tan and cannot seem to get the hang of it. I'm thinking about switching to a ring sling, but worried J will fall out of it.
  • Yes! I am able to get it so much tighter than with a moby wrap (stretchy wrap). His head is supported way better. I feel like woven wraps are the way to go for hands free baby wearing.
I can even nurse him in it-again hands free (and that pic was at 4 days old).
  • I use a ring sling and I love it, baby J falls right to sleep and stays asleep!! It's actually really easy to use one you've done it a couple times.
  • DD2 loves the ergo, I got the infant insert and she's out as soon as she's in it. Life saver for soccer camps and practices our big kids have right now. Nursing in it doesn't seem doable with the insert though..or at least not easy

  • has anyone tried this product from infanito?
  • @melbcourt89 I had one like that for my now y year old. I don't know if it was me but it would become a little loose after a while and I never trusted it hands free. I have a boba this time but haven't used it yet. It's been too hot to use it outside, and I haven't needed to use it in the house yet, but will probably try it soon.
  • @Mfuller76 I love my baby k'tan! I'm doing just the basic infant hold, and I feel like he's super secure in there! And it's so easy to put on. I did get the XS, which I was hesitant about at first (was considering a S), but I do think the snugness makes me feel like he's solidly in there... Maybe you need to size down?

  • @Bookhousegirl According to the size chart, it's the right size. But part of my problem (aside from not being able to get him in it without squishing him) is that he tends to slide down towards my belly. Is that a sign that it is too big?

Hmm maybe...mine keeps him up pretty high at my chest. I also have found that pulling down on the back loop after I put him in, readjusts everything to be in the best and most comfortable spot.

  • I'm another fan of the baby K'tan and also am loving my Solly wrap. I got K'tan Active so it is mesh and feels pretty comfortable in this hot weather. I followed the sizing chart and got the xs. Since my chest is so big I was worried it wouldn't fit but it is a great snug fit for my chubby guy.

For later we have a Tula that I'm super excited to use.

  • I used a Moby with DS when he was tiny and then moved to an Ergo. Loved them both. Will repeat the same with this baby, but also picked up an Infantino Unison Newborn carrier for cheap. It is too hot where I live to use the Moby or the Ergo with insert outdoors. The Infantino got good reviews for being lightweight and good for newborns, so hoping to use that for outdoors until she grows into the Ergo and will use the Moby if we plan to be indoors.
