Need advice or maybe reassurance

We were supposed to leave tosay to go out n vacation withy friend and her two kids but we held back because my son got pink eye yesterday morning. He has been on drops since and supposedly not contagious anymore since its been over 24 hours. Well now I think he is teething, has a low grade fever (usually he gets from teething),and a little cough. We went to the doc (for the eye) and I told her all of this and she said it was ok for him to still go just to keep him away from the baby (3 months) if he has a fever when there. I'm a wreck. He is acting fine still a very playful happy baby boy... Just exhausted and coughs every once in a while with a little runny nose. I talked to my friend she obviously says it's fine (her kids go to daycare with my LO). Is it ok for us to go tomorrow morning in hopes he sleeps in the car for the 6 hr drive (stopping obv) and get there tomorrow or should I wait another day? I feel torn. Am I a bad mom for bringing him with these symptoms I will feel awful if anyone gets sick especially her kids. Ugh an to think the pat month I have been worried about the ride and him now it's the furthest thing from my mind.

Re: Need advice or maybe reassurance

  • My philosophy is always to be up front with other parents.  You told her he has a fever, she knows he just got over pink eye and about the cough and says to come.  In my opinion, if anything happens it's on her now.  We call and let people know if we suspect one or both of the kids is sick but if they tell us to still come then I don't feel guilty if someone else's kids get sick.

We have had plenty of people ask us to reschedule and some who want to keep plans.  It just depends on the type of people they are or sometimes the plans they have coming up in the near future.

Your definition of a low fever and the medical definition of a fever may be completely different. What's his temp?

If he has an elevated temp but not a fever, a little cough, and pink eye that's been treated for more than 24 hours and is not contagious... I don't see a reason not to go unless you don't want to.

  • Temp ranges from 100.0-101.0. I had told the doc about this (Bc of course in the office when they took his temp it was 98.7) and there was no concern really just to watch.

101 does sound like a legit fever probably not from teething. How is he sleeping? Will you have access to an urgent care there in case the URI turns into an ear infection? Poor little guy.

  • Before you get too nervous about his temp, I would take it rectally. I had a false alarm scare when I was getting 101 reads from the forehead scanning and ear thermometers. Went into the hospital in a panic (baby was only 6 weeks old) and found he had no temp. They told me that sweat and getting riled up from crying can often result in false reads and to also take his temp in the bum to get the most accurate reading.

Temp was done rectally. He is 11 months old (don't think I mentioned that before). I have located an urgent care there just in case :( his sleeping is semi normal.  Doc thought ear infection when I first brought him in but they ended up looking great she said. I'm bringing his humidifier too def helps with the cough and nose. But I think your right. I told her laid it out there and she has repeatedly told me to come. So I guess I'll just try my best to keeps hands clean and nose wiped. :(. His first vacation seems to already be a bit of a mess :(  thank you ladies!! It's always nice to get all your opinions and outside views on things!
  • Second what the others have said - you warned your friend, so you did your part! Now, if I was your friend, I would have said it's better if you didn't come, but I'm a bit of a germaphobe and avoid sick people like the plague, especially around my little guy! Haha.

Hope your LO starts to feel better so you can enjoy the vaca!
  • Update. Yesterday morning (after packing Friday night) my LO woke up with 102 fever. I immediately called the doc and told my DH we weren't going he had to be sick sick. Got to the doctor and he ended up having an ear infection and not sick or some sort of virus.

Aww, I'm sorry little man is sick! Terrible timing, although at least you found out before you left. Hope he feels better soon!
