  • How far along are you? 36w3d

Induction scheduled?  Or are you allowed to go past 40 weeks? Doctor said he will treat the pregnancy as a normal one for the most part as long as my numbers are good and I'm not on insulin. We will talk about induction at 41 weeks, if need be. As of right now, I'm not getting extra ultrasounds or any NSTs.

Are you currently diet controlled or medication controlled? Diet controlled.

    Questions?

Rants/frustrations/fears? My levels have been on the lower end of normal and the doctor was completely fine with that. I am able to squeeze in a few more carbs (like sharing fries with DH) and still have a great number but I'm definitely not overdoing it. I'll indulge maybe once a week. At my growth ultrasound (routine at my OB's office), baby was measuring on track and things were looking well, he said I'm definitely not overfeeding baby so that was great to hear! My GD was caught somewhat early but I feel like my bump is so huge that she would for sure measure ahead.

Helpful tips/meals or snacks that work well for you? TBH, I am done with cooking for the rest of this pregnancy! I am so tired and SO sore that I can barely be on my feet for 10 minutes. We got things that are easy to put together. I do a lot of eggs, cheese, whole grain pastas, whole wheat tortilla pizzas, and other easy meals. I've loved pizza this entire pregnancy and one of my treats is sharing a medium thin crust pizza from Dominos with H! I can have half and still get a great number.

Officially allowed to go past 40 weeks :)

Are you currently diet controlled or medication controlled?
    Diet controlled still

    Questions?
Not really! Well, is anyone super tired lately? I have been sleeping through the night, 8 hours, but then i still get so tired i sleep for like 4 hours during the day too. I asked my mom and she wasn't concerned but IDK

    Rants/frustrations/fears?
I am so done with cooking too @AlwaysAuntNeverMom lol I went grocery shopping and bought food that can be mircowaved or its a throw in the crockpot and walk away meal.

Helpful tips/meals or snacks that work well for you?
Taco Bell is still my best friend.
Yesterday I had a drink from Starbucks and didn't get it unsweetened and my numbers were still fantastic!

Induction scheduled?  Or are you allowed to go past 40 weeks? Induction scheduled for 9/1. I'll be 38w2d.

Are you currently diet controlled or medication controlled? Long acting insulin at morning and night. Fast acting insulin with meals.

    Questions? None.

Rants/frustrations/fears? I have an appointment with the Endocrinologist today. I have a feeling they're going to raise my insulin again because my fasting and breakfast have been higher than they want it lately (but in range of what the OB wants). Fasting has been over 90, but under 95. Breakfast has been over 110, but under 120. This worries me because they've been very formulaic about raising everything, and not taking into consideration that my morning numbers are more trouble than the lunch/dinner ones (they've been staying consistently in the 80-90 range). I'm worried more insulin is going to cause me to start get too low in the afternoon/evenings. Hoping if they do raise it, it's just more morning insulin.

Helpful tips/meals or snacks that work well for you? We had a Philly Cheesesteak foil meal over the weekend that I pinned off Pinterest. It was so good, so easy to make, and gave me good numbers. DH also loved it. DD was not a fan.

  • @camichael84 I can't wait to see Layla :D

Why would they raise your insulin again? Those numbers sound fine. Doesn't OB trump endo?
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Megan324 In my mind, OB trumps Endo. But since Endo is the one that prescribed the insulin and monitors how my sugar is doing, she has final say on all things GD related. She wants my fasting under 90 and meals under 110 (at 2 hrs). So the fasting and breakfast has been is a tad high for her, and that's why I think she'll increase the insulin. Hoping since I'm almost 36 weeks that if she does increase it, it's the last one!

  • @camichael84 ohhh makes sense. Hopefully it will be the last increase!
    :)

  • Well I guess I am back.....

I went for the blood work that the new doc and perinatologist recommended.  Just a once a week fasting and 2 hour.  My two hour, as always, was perfectly fine.  However my fasting was 108.  We are hoping this was some sort of fluke or something.  But now this means more testing this week and possibly adding medication.
  • Endo was happy with all my numbers, but did increase my long acting for the fasting. Best news is that she said I don't have to come back until my postpartum visit after they retest my sugar!

    Questions?
    Nope
    Rants/frustrations/fears?
Just very uncomfortable with contractions all the time.  I'm really hoping I'm starting to dilate.

One word for you all: CHEESECAKE!!  I made some over the weekend and my 1 hr BG was 109.
  • How far along are you?  37w1d

Induction scheduled?  Or are you allowed to go past 40 weeks?  Induction scheduled for 8/31 at 7AM at 39w2d.  I'm praying I go into labor before then because I'm miserable.

Are you currently diet controlled or medication controlled?  Med controlled.  Same insulin dose that I've been on for awhile now so that's good that it hasn't needed to be increased!

Questions?  Does anyone else just feel like total crap? GD related or not lol.

Rants/frustrations/fears?  I just want this baby on the outside already.  I have fears of something happening to him in these last few weeks and I'm so tired of worrying.

Helpful tips/meals or snacks that work well for you?  Still rocking it with my ice cream at bedtime.  I had to switch from my Chipotle burrito bowls to cheese quesadillas due to heartburn/acid reflux and those give my good numbers also.

    37+2

Induction scheduled?  Or are you allowed to go past 40 weeks?
We will finalize a date this week. Earliest would be 8/29, which is 39+1 and what I'm hoping for.

Are you currently diet controlled or medication controlled?
Insulin at bedtime. Fasting numbers are creeping up again, and dinner is getting hard to control. We'll see how things look on Thursday at my next NST/ultrasound/MFM check-in. I have a feeling I'll be put on insulin for dinner numbers.

    Questions?
When will I go into labor already?!? ;)

    Rants/frustrations/fears?
Sarafuss I could write your post word for word. I'm miserable, feel like garbage all the time, and am ready for this baby to come already! I've had two extended periods (8 hours and 12 hours) of false labor, and I honestly don't think I can mentally survive another episode. And, rationally I know it's because he's bigger and space is tight, but I find myself getting irrationally scared over low movement and kick counts. I will sometimes sit on the couch for hours at a time meticulously counting and getting myself worked up over his movements. I know I just need to relax and wait out the next couple of weeks, but it's getting harder and harder.

    Questions? Nope

Rants/frustrations/fears? My midwife let me drop to twice a day testing, wohoo! So helpful and my numbers have been really good lately.

Helpful tips/meals or snacks that work well for you? I think I may have burned myself out on ice cream... How that's possible I don't know. I bought these chocolate peanut clusters at Winco and it's 3 per 15 carbs! Yum.

Induction scheduled?  Or are you allowed to go past 40 weeks? I keep forgetting to ask, but no one has mentioned induction, due dates, or c-sections. I believe they are treating me like a normal pregnancy (except the extra appointments because of an unrelated issue) for now. I'm still GD/high risk but other than checking my numbers nothing is really different.

Are you currently diet controlled or medication controlled? Diet.

    Questions?

Rants/frustrations/fears? Not much of any of these but I guess I got a little too zealous adding carbs back. Have to scale back again. It was fun while it lasted!

Helpful tips/meals or snacks that work well for you? I bought these "3g net carb" (net carbs are the carb count minus the fiber count, which is useless if you're counting carbs for blood sugar purposes) tortillas that are 13g per tortilla. They make excellent wraps and soft tacos, and have 10g of fiber, and since the carb total is still only 13g I can have two of them and still have good numbers.

  • Hi All,
Well now things have taken an interesting turn.  I am going to need to take meds for diabetes.  All of a sudden my fasting sugars can't get below 100.  They were fine until 36 weeks.  :(

I'm sorry  :( that's definitely what none of ud wants to hear. Unfortunately, my doctor said GD can get harder to deal with as the pregnancy progresses. I hope they're able to get those fasting numbers under control quickly and without much of a fuss!

Sorry you ended up on meds. In pregnancy, insulin needs just keep rising until around 36 weeks, so that is very well why it creeped up on you. Did they put you on Glyburide? I took that for my fasting with with my first pregnancy, and before I started insulin this pregnancy. With my first, it did the trick to get fasting down, and DD1 came out with no side effects of a GD baby (she was 7.5 lbs, no blood sugar problems).

  • I am going to push for glyburide.  I am 37 weeks now, and a day after they actually start the meds, I'll be 38 weeks.  They are inducing between 39 and 40 weeks, so whatever I go on, I'll only really be on for a week.  Baby has been measuring small.

    Rants/frustrations/fears?

I'm new to all of this, I was so overwhelmed by the nutritionist when I went to the visit last Thursday...I know we are more emotional during pregnancy, but she really made me feel terrible. I cried when got on the elevator and walked to my car. I have never been inclined to eating sweets or even carbs for that matter so I thought the visit would go well. Then she started going a thousand miles a minute about every thing I could and could not eat. Circling here x-ing there. I just nodded my head and wished it to be over. I waited to have that appointment for almost 3 weeks, only to meet with her for 10 minutes. Luckily I know about diabetes and carb counting, I feel terrible for any patient that sees her and doesn't.
I've been testing for the past 8 days, four times a day and my numbers are not so great. Most are close to target, and some below. I've only had a handful that have been way off. I sent my log to my practitioners office last Monday as they requested and the haven't called me to discuss the results. I called twice on Wednesday and my OBGYN called on Thursday. Today is Friday and I didn't hear from either of them...I don't want to be put on medications...but I would like to know what they think about my log. This is all so frustrating. I really hate testing my blood sugar...pressing the trigger on the lancet is a nightmare, it takes me a minute or two to muster up the courage. I know it doesn't always hurt, but I can't get over it!! I just want my pancreas to get it together and do its job...why does this pregnancy have to get harder than it already is?

Induction scheduled?  Or are you allowed to go past 40 weeks? No induction scheduled, but my OB says they won't let me go past 40 weeks. Right now baby girl is measuring 2 weeks ahead via outside measurements, but they're waiting to decide on an early induction after my 36 week growth scan. OB said if she's measuring big they'll probably schedule me for around 38 weeks.

Are you currently diet controlled or medication controlled? Still diet controlled! I honestly thought I would be on insulin by this point because I was still getting some highs, but lately they've been much easier to control, but then again I've been much more active swimming and walking, I just have to push myself to do it. My diabetic nurse said if baby is measure big at 36 week scan they might put me on insulin until the induction, but it's still up in the air, and she's happy with what they're at for now.

    Questions?

Rants/frustrations/fears? On the one hand, I'm a little happy there's the possibility of induction because then at least I'll know when this is all going down and when baby will be here. But on the other hand I'm upset because I won't get that experience of going into labour naturally, and I just want baby to be born safely.

Helpful tips/meals or snacks that work well for you? I'm so over watching my diet... I hate it. I don't eat a lot of junk, but my nutritionist makes me do these worksheets to plan out my meals, which helps but it's such a PITA.

@Knottie51481210 I'm so so sorry that you had that experience with the nutritionist, I can't imagine how discouraging that must have been for you. Being a nurse, I know there's usually so much pressure from the facility/health authority/upper processes that make us feel rushed, but it should never come at the expense of a patient. I would ask for a follow up appointment if possible and get her to explain things to you in a much more user friendly fashion; I would no doubt be overwhelmed if someone tried to teach me the in's and out's of diabetic nutrition in 10 minutes!

  • @yellowrose314  I only saw the nutritionist 1 time 2 weeks after I started testing.
my OB doesn't even look at my numbers,  she just asks me if they are in range, like I could totally lie.
    I think it's weird....

how often do you see the nutritionist?
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Megan324 Where I live, if you're given a diabetes diagnosis you are referred to a clinic that's run by an RN and a nutritionist through the local hospital. For GD, you see them every 2 weeks until the end of your pregnancy. The RN is the one who monitors your numbers, and the nutritionist really just follows your diet/exercise plans and is SUPPOSED to give you encouragement (she rarely does, she just lectures most of the time...). Also in my region, OB's do not do primary care anymore, you either get followed by your family doctor if they have a sub speciality in obstetrics (which most do), or you see a midwife. The only time you get referred to an OB is if you have a high risk pregnancy due to twins, GD, pre-e, etc etc. I've seen my OB once since I was diagnosed with GD, he's happy with my numbers. I won't see him again until the diabetic RN recommends I start insulin or when I get induced (because he won't let me go past 40 weeks). I still see my midwives for everything else.

That's pretty different. For me, I just saw a dietitian when I was diagnosed and she went over everything and gave me a meter. I had a follow-up two weeks later and brought a food log and my numbers. She "released" me to the OB and he's pretty thorough about checking my numbers at each appointment. I would be do pissy if I had a nitpicky nutritionist or doctor annoying me. At least the dietitian always told me I could fit in more carbs and always have my numbers at or right below the limit.

Yeah it makes for A LOT of appointments, plus I have weekly NST's. I only have one appointment left at the diabetic clinic. I liked the nutritionist at first but she literally has no sense of humour these last few weeks. I've been gaining 1/2 a pound each week, which she was happy with. This last week I gained 5 pounds, I'm convinced it was a mistake (BP is fine, no blurred vision or excessive swelling so my OB is pretty sure it's not pre-e related). She saw that I had 2 pieces of bacon for breakfast ONE DAY, and spent 5 minutes lecturing me about how bacon is "just fat, so what's the point".... IT'S BACON. It's heaven. The swine is divine. Leave me alone lady!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I only met with the dietitian once to get a crash course on carb counting (already knew how to do it) and my meter. I don't have a diabetes nurse, my doctors check my food/number log when I go in for clinicals. Which I guess I could lie on as well, since they don't check the actual meter. I can't imagine having an extra appointment every week. That would bump me up to four a week, and at that point I'd just rent a room in the hospital because I'd never be home anyway.

@Knottie51481210 There actually was a woman at the class with me who had no idea what carbs were. She was from South Africa, older, already had 5 children, and didn't understand the diagnosis at all. It was kind of hard to watch because the dietitian wasn't sure how to explain everything to her, and her diet is food from her country, which is pretty heavy on carbs. She didn't know what to eat at all, and seemed very depressed, because bread is a staple of her diet.

@yellowrose314 If a nutritionist lectured me for five minutes about bacon I would have just laughed at her. Fat is very nutritionally important, and two slices is hardly excessive. My daily macros are pretty much 50% fat (cheese is important to me) and if I don't get enough sodium every day I get endless charley horses and migraines. Bacon is a staple! It should have it's own spot on the pyramid! Lol.

No! I prefer turkey bacon. I've never much cared for real bacon. Clearly this is an UO. But your nutritionist is crazy. Did she think your gain was a result of 2 pieces of bacon? Also, as long as you're not going over your carbs and your numbers are good, why does she care what else you are eating?

Between both of my pregnancies, I've met with one nutritionist once. First pregnancy, I checked in once a week with a nurse via email, and she'd give me advice on any highs I was having (always fasting related). This time, I check in with my Endo. My monitor synchs to an app on my phone. They have access to my info, and download my numbers. The weird thing is that the Endo doesn't seem the least bit concerned with my diet. If my numbers get high, they just raise my insulin and don't address the carbs at all. Granted, I never eat over 60 carbs for lunch or dinner or more than 15 for breakfast, but it feels off to me that they don't seem to be monitoring the carbs.

  • @camichael84 I actually prefer turkey bacon too, only because I don't like chewing on actual fat and it's less greasy. But real bacon is still great. The meat part. Lol.

Also, my one hour after dinner tonight was only 66. Diabetes makes no sense to me.

I can't stand turkey bacon. I need the grease and delicious saltiness from regular bacon. To each their own ;)

Well, after her little lecture about the evils of bacon, she said "The less weight you gain now, the less you have to worry about losing later". I almost lost it on her. Yeah lady, because losing weight after having a baby will be the first thing on my mind. Not keeping a tiny human alive or maintaining my sanity. I was so pissed. I would ask my midwife to hook me up with the endocrinologist but I only have one appointment left so I'm just going to grin and bear it.

  • @yellowrose314 I gained 5 lbs the last week, too. I'm sure it's a legit gain because I also started swelling around the same time. I would want to smack anyone that brought up "it's more to lose later".

  • I gained about four last week.  The doctor didn't seem concerned.

I also started on half of a 1.25 mg pill of meds yesterday as a precautionary measure.  Fluids looked normal and baby hasn't been gaining much weight.  The biggest fear is her regulating her blood sugar after birth.
