3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random ;)

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))

Re: Fit Mama Check-In!

  • Last week was good, sorry I wasn't around to start the check in, I was in the middle of the Maine woods without cell or Internet--I got 3 runs in, a hike, and lots of kayaking!  Ran 5miles last night in prep for my 10k in a month.  Absolutely terrible vacation diet though!

This week-lord willing it sticks- I'm finally starting to feel better with no ms! So I want to get back into my usual morning workout routine on non-run days!

3--biggest challenge has been the ms and using it as an excuse to not work out and take a nap with my free time instead.

4-RANT!!! I finally have my first appointment today!! At almost 12 weeks I am so excited it's finally here---I've been waiting forwvwrrrrrrr. Looking forward to making sure this little bean is okay, and finally getting an EDD because my last cycle was all over the place.

5--I would grab my journals! I have a trunk filled with them... I've been keeping them since I was around ten. I love looking back at my life this way, and their irreplaceable!  Two- Mini safe in the closet with passports, birth certificates, etc. and... Hmm. I'll go with my guitar

  • 1-How was last week?
Terrible. Worked out on Tuesday only to have spotting and cramping. Doctor said things are ok, but to dial it back a bit. I've been to scared to do anything since.... Plus super exhausted, slightly nauseous and have a cold.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
try to do some low key workouts to ease back into things....

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
getting over the fear that I will lose this baby and that I might aggrevate things by working out....

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
Anyone else have spotting after exercise? How did you "get past" the fear of working out again?

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
photo albums, some of hubby's art, daughters baby journal
(I think I just learned I'm less sentimental than I thought.... Literally looked around and thought, "family is ok? I'm pretty apathetic to the rest. Very suprised at that fact. )
  • @julievdm12 I'm sorry you have had to deal with the spotting! That makes it hard to not worry! And boo to summer colds.

I haven't had any spotting, but definitely have had cramping (small contractions)  if I push too hard during a workout or run.  I usually haven't had enough water that day.  Usually if I take a break or just slow down for a bit and drink some water it will stop and I pick back up.

Obviously listen to your doctor and take it easy! But miscarriage can not be caused by exercise in a pregnancy without other complications. So if your not high risk-  Being fit during this time is only beneficial to both of you :)  hope you can find some peace during this stressful time!
  • mentally.... ill say im a fit mom.

truth is. im not working out..... not even a little bit, not even at all.  doc said that's ok for me though.

ill try to do some arm exercises this week =D

  • 1-How was last week? Not terrible. I got in 2 workouts and I ate a little bit better (probably not as good as I should have)

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
To get to the gym at least 3 times and to not over-do it with after dinner sweets (that's been my downfall lately)

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
The nausea! It makes me want to eat only starchy carbs and never work out again. I seriously cannot wait to feel more like myself!

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
I've read that you're not supposed to work out on your back beginning in your second trimester. One of my regular classes has a series of crunches/leg lifts/etc. Most of the time my head and shoulders are elevated throughout these workouts but I'm still lying on my back - Do you guys think that's ok or would I need a modification?

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
Lock box with all of our important paperwork, my wedding album and probably my purse (cause I never leave the house without it)

  • 1-How was last week?  I had to be pulled off a flight and treated by EMTs at the airport after being kept on the runway for 4 hours, half of which was w/o AC (during a heat wave) due to a mechanical problem.  I'm fine, I was just feeling really weak, sick, and light headed and demanded to be taken off the flight.  It's protocol to call police and EMTs when that happens so I allowed them to check my vitals before going home.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
To get up and get active again after 3 days of rest.

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
The heat and managing to keep to a routine when I'm on the road constantly, sometimes two trips requiring airline travel in the same day.

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
What are y'all doing to stay fit in this heat?  I suppose I could go to the gym but last time I went in while pregnant the smell really bothered me (first *real* excuse I've had in years not to go to the gym, lol!)  and when I go outside, I'm all "who the f*ck is following me around with a space heater?!"  Seriously, it's hot as balls out there right now and I'm having trouble getting motivated to go out in it.

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
My jewelry stuffed into my purse, my late, great aunt's handbag collection (may be cheating as it's more than one) and my wedding dresses.

@onefootinthebayou I do YouTube workouts on super hot days. There are lots of great options that don't need equipment! My current favorite is BodyRockTV . Another quality one for Hitt is Fitness Blender. But YouTube is awesome cuz they have everything from kickboxing to yoga free from the comfort of your home AC  ;)
  • @gracie4400. I would modify in several weeks. nit necessarily right at 2nd tri, but as you get closer to the third tri.  I think you'll be able to tell when:  I tried to go get my teeth cleaned near the end of second tri and I could barely make it through without getting warm, nauseated and almost passing out.  All the weight of baby pressing down cuts off oxygen and is t good for either or you.  Plus, lots of ab work isn't good for pregnancy.  I'm sure your OB and Google can answer more questions about the ab work.
  • 1-How was last week?
We were on vacation and it was jam packed planned with things to do. So while I didn't technically get a work out in, we went hiking, walked for hours and hours sightseeing and such. I ate well (Lots of yummy seafood in Maine!)

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
Sroller strides 3 times this week and the gym twice.

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
It's been in the 100s here and I have such a hard time going to stroller strides outside with my lo. He hates the stroller as it is let alone when he's sweating. I've bought a fan, frogg toggs and wrap ice packs for him but he's still miserable. So my SS attendance might be dependent on the weather. Which is fine we can go to the gym but then there the hill care is really rought with a lo under 1. They have severely restricted hours and you have to call ahead to make sure there isn't another under 1 there already. So my final option WOULD be the gym I have in the basement. However... my family is living in the basement right now. Ever feel like the odds are just stacked against you? Lol they are leaving next week and the summer Temps are breaking soon so I'm still eating well aND staying positive!

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
I think the above was enough lol

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))

    Computer for family photos
    Scrapbooks
Folder with copies of all legal files, passports etc.

  • 1-How was last week? Good! I was able to get three good workouts in plus some walking.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
It has cooled off a bit, so I want to get some more walks in on top of 3 workouts plus, plus some lap swimming.

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
Being sick in the morning. It's tough getting myself out when all I want to do is throw up.

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
Wishing my boobs didn't hurt so much, then I might be able to do a bit more running.

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
Photo albums, purse and the external drive that has all my digital photos. I'm with you @julievdm12 - I had to sit and think about something, which then makes me question why I even have all this stuff.

  • Hi, all. Hoping to check in here from now on, since morning sickness seems like it's finally easing up (knock on wood) and I'd love to be more active in this pregnancy than I was with the other two. But I haven't popped in here before so *waves*!

1-How was last week? I'll be honest, I think I only got on my elliptical once for 45 minutes last week, haha. The MS was still strong with this one.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
Hoping to work out at least 4-5 days, as long as I continue feeling fine.

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
Apart from the MS, the food. I'm finally getting over aversions after losing 6-7 pounds in first tri (which I'm fine with honestly, I'm at the higher end of average BMI anyway and I'm not nutrient deprived). BUT. I'm trying to eat healthier and it's almost working TOO well. I feel like I fill up on far too few calories. I never thought I'd say my problem is having a hard time eating enough calories, but that seems to be what I'm struggling with. I'll eat a bowl of Greek yogurt, fruit, and 1/4 cup granola  (<250 calories) and be completely full. Not sure if it's a pregnancy thing or what. It's at the point where I feel like I can't exercise some days even if I wanted to because it would burn more than I can afford to as a pregnant woman.

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
    Nothing for now!

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
My computer (this thing was expensive and it's still not completely paid for!), an armful of my favorite clothes (can I cheat and group that together as one thing?), and the necklace DH got me for my first Mother's Day when I was pregnant with my daughter.

  • @Bluebird2318 welcome! :) I feel you on the food thing! Luckily tri one it doesn't matter at all the amount your eating. Baby will take what it needs! I'm sure as you work out more, and as you get farther along, your appetite will grow and you'll feel like you have the opposite problem ;)  hope your ms stays away and you can get back to a workout routine!
  • 1-How was last week? Did P90x, bootcamp and tabata, 4 days total. But every day I workout, I go to bed EARLY at night so wondering if it's worth it! I barely get my babies in bed and I'm asleep.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
At least 4 workouts, and to finally tell my trainer I'm pregnant.

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
Pushing myself too hard because I am trying to hide my pregnancy from coworkers! A big group of us belong to our onsite gym and share a trainer. But I hope to come out of hiding this week so I can take it a little easier. I also want to stop doing ab work with flexion.

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
I would like some advice on what I can do instead of pushups, planks, etc. since so much of my workouts are some form of those movements. And please don't tell me to do wall pushups because come on.

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
Ugh this is like my nightmare. My journals, photo album (from before digitals were a thing!) and... my phone I guess?
  • @Cbeanz you should still be able to do push-ups and planks for a lot of your pregnancy if it is something you have been doing already. Or is it getting uncomfortable for you already?

1-How was last week? worked out 4x at home (30-40 min each) - I have an online subscription with Barre3 that I absolutely love and because it's been wayyy too hot here to run/jog outside I've been sticking to the home workouts lately :)

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
get at least four 30 min workout sessions in; if it's not too crazy hot/humid I'd love to run through the park with my dog one of these mornings also

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
I'm exhausted most of the time, esp. at night, so working up the energy to get a little active is hard - plus feeling totally bloated all the time, I feel like I've already gained 10 lb.

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
I have so much respect for all you ladies staying active & for those who are running! I also have had some fears about over-doing it and have only gone running once since I found out I'm pregnant even though I know it's safe & all I just feel sometimes I might jinx it or something - I used to run 5 miles 1-2x/week so I'd love to get back into that routine.

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
I actually created a kit that's ready to go with all the essentials we might need to grab in case something happens - so if I had time to, I'd grab that along with my purse and my phone (or my laptop if I can cheat & put my phone in my purse lol)

  • @CanadianintheSouth Thanks, good to know!  Planks are still comfortable for me but I'm afraid of diastasis recti. I was afraid it would make it worse.
  • @Cbeanz definitely keep an eye out for diastasis recti but I plan to continue with push ups and planks long as they feel ok, just modifying as I go (to knees). Luckily my instructor is great about giving alternatives for those who are pregnant, when I can't do the on my back ab work.

  • 1-How was last week? Horrible. I made it to the gym and trained! I thought I was taking it overly easy, then I got home and threw up all over everything then slept the rest of the day.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
I'm training only once, going to keep it to 30 minutes not including a cool-down. This weekend I'll be walking a ton.

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
All-consuming morning sickness. Also, my lulu capris are too small but the maternity yoga pants I bought don't stay up during cardio so The Struggle Is So Real. I was literally pulling my pants up all over the gym.

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
I'm super sick of being sick and stressed and unhappy... that's been my status quo basically since I got pregnant and I hate it. I want to feel good and excited and it feels like every time I get close to that I get knocked back by something new like getting sick after training or another ridiculousness with my doc's office. I can't wait until I can exercise more and get the endorphins going again.

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
Probably my phone and our hurricane kit. Wedding rings. We have all our photos digital & backed up.

  • I love that this thread exists! I am pretty early on, just 8 weeks - much sympathy to the ladies also dealing with MS and trying to work out - it's SO HARD! especially when people don't know yet that you're pregnant!

    1-How was last week?
It's been very hot where I live, and I do crossfit in a gym that has big garage doors that open but no a/c so I decided to skip days that I was worried I would overheat. So I only went 2 days.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
To go to crossfit 3x a week and since I live near a beach maybe some swimming this weekend

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
it's been a challenge to deal with the few people who know I am pregnant who think I should not be doing crossfit. I scale everything (weights and intensity) WAY down, modify many movements, and my trainer knows- so I'm not worried and I have been doing it for 2+ years before I was pregnant.

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
I find that the days I do get to work out, it takes my mind of the nausea and I feel great afterwards for a couple of hours, but I always have the craziest dreams that night because I sleep SOOO soundly!!

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out)) My grandmother's recipe box, my computer, and a painting that was my husbands's grandmother's.

  • 1-How was last week?
Last week was pretty meh. Most weeks have been. I'm struggling with the fact that I was in the best shape of my life and now I feel like I'm losing ground. Trying to get back into a good routine.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
I want to get 3 solid workouts this week and 4 next week. I want to start making sure I hit the gym 3-4 times a week consistently.

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
My biggest challenge has been scaling back and trying to keep my heart rate reasonable. I hate feeling like I'm not "doing my best". It makes me so down on myself. Thankfully I had my first appointment with my doctor this weekend and he told me to go for it! He said there's no reason I should have to limit myself. He said as long as I feel good and am getting enough oxygen then baby is too and that they don't really go by the heart rate rules anymore. What a load off!

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
I would feel better about my workouts if I didn't want to eat ALL the food in between. Literally all of it. Anything in sight.

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
I have a set of 3 keepsake boxes that have little things in them. Cards, momentos from our wedding, etc. I would grab those since they're full of little things that mean a lot to my husband and I. I've never been much for scrapbooking, but I like going through the boxes now and then. :)  Oh...but maybe I should forfeit one of the boxes and grab the mini safe that has all our legal documents in it (passports, marriage license, etc.) Yeah...that would probably be a little more responsible...

    Hi Ladies!
I've been lurking this thread and not participating.... why? Because I've been beyond disappointed in my lack of activity in the gym. I always thought I'd be a super fit preggers Momma-to-be but man oh man, these last 3 weeks have simply kicked my butt! HOWEVER.... tomorrow makes 11 weeks for me and I really am feeling like I'm on the up and up. Went to the gym Saturday and then lost motivation for a few days, but went back today and WOW. Had a fantastic workout and feel so amazing. I NEED TO BE IN THE GYM!!! That's that. So I thought by joining this thread it would make me accountable and inspired to get back to the pre-preggers me :)

    1-How was last week?
Ugh.... I only went to the gym once. Still struggled with an energy deficit and nasty nausea.

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
3x in the gym... Combo of HIIT cardio + Jamie Eason's LiveFit Training plan. Today I did Day 1. (My Hubby took me to Dick's Sporting Goods over the weekend for new sports bras and workout clothes! So I have no excuses!)

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
The lack of energy, nausea, and how terribly my gym clothes already fit. I feel like the Pillsbury dough girl.

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
Let me think on this one...

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
My laptop (because of all the photos)
My bulldog Sofia's basketball pillow (she passed away in January at the age of 10 from cancer)
    My old photo albums
  • @triwellnessgirl. Welcome! Don't be too hard on yourself, mama!! Tri one is so so hard! I'm positive you will get back in your grove in the coming weeks and be thay fit gym mama you want to be! :) keep up the good work!

You could try benchpress, curls, tricep extensions, lunges (forward, backward), squats (regular, wide, deep). I stopped doing ab exercises (aside from planks) because I read a "fit mom pregnancy" blog and she said that obviously it won't hurt you, but the easiest way to get your core back after pregnancy is to not try to build/define those muscles while they are changing shape (and of course resuming a perfect diet and exercising frequently). She's not a doctor or anything, but she's had multiple children and looks like she's had none. Her theory actually makes sense to me. Your thoughts?

  • @jenny0228 I can totally relate! As soon as people learned I was pregnant, their question was "well, are you still running so much?" They asked me as early as 5/6 weeks and still ask me now at 11 weeks!

Umm.. hello. I've been doing this for a while now and understand way better than all of you whether it's too far, too fast, etc for me. I think my doctor and I are better at judging my physical activity, but thank you! I really just want to say, "I am going to assume that you are asking because you trust my judgement and want to be cheer me on in having a fit pregnancy." :|

yes, yes, yes!  Love this last response too! My last pregnancy I got so annoyed with my co-workers (all older women) they said they gained 60-70lbs a piece with their pregnancies and did nothing so they thought that's what I should do... Because for lots of women that's what was recommended years ago.  I am so grateful that we live in a time where fit pregnancy is encouraged! But people are still so clueless!  One fellow pregnant friend judged me all along last pregnancy and really thought I was endangering my daughter because of not only doing low key pregnancy workouts.  Ugh!  I wanted to say "I told you so" when she had a rough time physically coping with labor and took her months upon months to be able to do anything other than walk around the house.

Keep up the good work ladies. Haters gonna hate!
  • Checking in, but not answering any of the questions because right now the answer is no.

In survival mode and hoping to get back into the swing of things when I start feeling better. Although I did do a 5k fun run on Saturday and ran most of it. I just binged some McD's afterwards...

    Samantha - 4/5/2017

  • @RunBooRun Hope you start feeling better soon! Don't feel bad about being in survival mode, do what you gotta do and get back to it when you feel better! Sleep and relax for now :)

1-How was last week? Not hateful, not great either

2-What goals are you setting for the coming week?
I'm just trying to go with the flow. I've worked out once this week but I've been eating pretty well so I feel good about that. Honestly it's my birthday next week and DH and I are both going to be off for a week the last week in August so I'm kind of using that time to veg out and sleep during the last part of this first trimester, then September I'm going to get back to a stricter grind - planning workouts and meals and things.

3-What's been your biggest challenge so far?
Being soooo tired every day! I'm fine in the morning until about 3 pm then I'm just yawning until I fall asleep around 9:30 pm lol DH hounds me about it and is like it's so early! I know that, but I can't help it!

4-Questions, comments, rant, rave, advice, random
Just truckin along! I feel ok with the walking I've been doing, and happy with where I'm at. I'm down 7 lbs from when I first found out I was KU which makes me happy. I think after my next ultra sound on the 31st that I'm going to go to weighing myself on doctor visit dates rather than weekly, just so I don't obsess over it. But I'd like to only gain 10-15 lbs since I'm starting out at over my "healthy weight"

4-GTKY: if your house was on fire, what Are the three things you would take with you. ((Assume all family and pets are already out))
My makeup collection, my china cabinet that my grandpa made us for our wedding, and our wedding pictures cd.
  • @RunBooRun It's all about balance! Hope you start to feel like yourself soon! :)

  • @Bradleerick @kjd291 it's so true- even my husband at first didn't like the idea of me running. He has since come around and does trust my judgement but at first he said, "when you're running you're just pounding the pavement so hard, I'm not sure you should be doing such high impact movements" and I said "ok maybe YOU 'pound pavement' when you run but I don't, I just kind of coast along!!"

That said there is a road race this weekend that I run every year, it's 7mi and I gave away my number this year. It's supposed to be super hot and humid this weekend and the whole course is in the sun. I did feel like that would be over-doing it and I'm sad to miss it, but there's always next year!
  • Thanks for the encouragement @kjd291!!!!

i had another great workout today!! Did a Treadmill 5k followed by the Back / Biceps workout from the Jamie Eason LiveFit Trainer!
  • @kjd291 What a great idea! I plan to go on a hike tomorrow with two good friends, hoping the rain stays away, it's been pouring here all week! But I am dead tired today, so I don't foresee a workout for me today lol. Good luck in your workout!
  • I have gotten all of my workouts in this week for my goal! Went to stroller strides 3X and swam laps with a friend who pushed me to get a good workout in. Also have gone on a 1.5 mile walk at least 4 times.

@Cbeanz talked with two of my stroller strides instructors today in class and asked them what they thought about  plank/pushups. They said if it is comfortable you should be able to plank/pushup most of pregnancy if it is something you have been doing all along. One did say that people tend to go to inclined positions later in pregnancy (after 30 weeks) because the belly can feel really heavy or get in the way. Hope that helps! I'm no expert but I figured my instructors would have some insight.

Great way to start my Saturday!!!! A sub-30 Treadmill 5k while watching the Oly Tri (GO USA!) Jamie Eason's LiveFit Leg Workout! And 30min on the ArcTrainer! 830 Total Calories Burned! OH YEAH! Psyched for the rest of the day too.... My Honey's taking me to Pasadena for lunch at our fave Greek restaurant followed by some shopping at Lululemon. WooHoo!!
