February 2017 Moms

My kid has hand, foot & mouth and I'm a little nervous.

My 3 year old has HFMD.  I just realized it last night - he's had a fever and diarrhea since late Tuesday/early Wed, but I didn't notice any of the telltale spots until last night -- he doesn't have many and they're just on the bottoms of his feet.  Confirmed his diagnosis today.  My OB said that the risk of complications to my baby are "less than 2%" -- which is pretty good, I know, but not zero.  Feeling a little nervous over here.  My daughter had this years ago so I assume I've been exposed before, but I guess it can be caused by a variety of viruses.

  • I wouldn't worry too much of I were you. I think you would have to actually contract it for it to be an issue, which is really rare in adults. Even if you did contract it, the risk of problems are so low. How far along are you again? Once you're out of your first trimester I think you're in the clear for any risk no matter how small.

  • @MrsDrKirkpatrick Well, I do have one of the symptoms.  TMI alert -- diarrhea.  I'm 15 weeks tomorrow.

  • DD had it about a month ago, I got an extremely sore throat (no sores in mouth or throat so not sure what that means), but no other symptoms that seemed even slightly related. I've had a MW appt since then and baby is still in there growing with a strong heartbeat! I read (online, so who knows if these are true or not) that rarely miscarriage can happen if you're very early in pregnancy. And that the most concerning time is if you got it around when you deliver, because of the risk of new baby catching it. I'm 15 weeks today, so around 10-11 weeks when she had it, and I'm assuming it's all good since there's still a strong heartbeat. I know it's hard, but try not to worry, it will make you feel worse...
  • I don't blame you for feeling nervous, but it sounds like both you and the baby will more than likely be okay. I hope that ends up being the case and that you all feel better. I know it sucks to have to feel sick and have something nerve wracking like that in the back of your mind at the same time.

My kid is a HFMD magnet. He's had it like 4-5 times.  It's never been that bad more him but one time my husband got it from him and it was TERRIBLE.   Make sure you wash your hands a bunch.

Also so I was home with him every single time and never got it. It's really hard for adults who aren't weird to get it.
  • @16isourluckynumber can you get an immunity check done? I had this done about 6 weeks ago when a man i work with announced that his child had rubella & our office manager freaked out! Luckily it turned out that the child didnt have rubella & id had the vacines as a child but was better to be safe than sorry. Same thing happened today, one of the other engineers came over after lunch, sat beside me & asked had i had chicken pox before as he has the shingles! I have had so it was fine but he shouldnt have been in work until he knew that i had never mind coming to sit beside me all lunchtime & saying nothing!
  • Yep I'm going for some blood work on Monday.
