Weight gain

I had my 16 week checkup today and found out that I have gained 10 pounds since my twelve week checkup. I only gained about 3 pounds during my first trimester but I feel like 10 pounds in a month is a lot. My doctor told me not to worry as my gaining seems to be on track but I feel very nervous and self-conscious about this. I can't help but worry that if I keep gaining at this rate that I'm going to gain too much. Anyone else had issues with these feelings? I have struggled on and off with body image issues  and an eating disorder throughout my life which may be why it's bothering me so much it's really getting me down. Ugh

Re: Weight gain

  • Yes, I was up 7 pounds between those same checkups. I am already overweight and have been told to watch my gain. I've gained 14 so far, and I feel like it's out of my control. I don't feel like I'm eating for 2 or that my eating is too much. I'm not moving as much though because I'm tired and still fighting morning "all day" sickness and terrible heartburn. I basically feel like crap most of the time. I didn't have an issue with weight gain my first pregnancy, so I'm stumped on how to handle this.

I brought all these concerns up with my doctor this week and asked about eating plans or calorie intake guidelines I should follow. She didn't seem concerned. Just said try to exercise some. I'm like your the one who told me the goal was to only gain around 20 pounds. At this rate, I'm scared what the scale will get up to.

  • I'm up 18lbs since becoming pregnant and I know exactly what you're feeling. Pre-pregnancy I had worked so hard to get healthy and now I feel like I'm letting it all waste away. Doesn't help that at 17 weeks I still just look like I've gained 18lbs instead of being pregnant--I have no bump whatsoever and this is my second. I gained 12lbs from my 12 to 16 week appointment. I keep reminding myself that this is the ONLY time in my life where gaining weight is "acceptable" (for me, screw society) and to enjoy it because it'll also be the last. Make a plan to get the weight off after pregnancy and with Drs ok. I know what works for my body now and I'm actually excited to get back to my workout routine post-pregnancy. My issue with gaining weight with this pregnancy has been my MS in first tri I ate what I could keep down which was usually bad stuff and general palate change from being pregnant. Salad and raw veggies taste disgusting in my mouth but carbs which I typically limit (not Atkins but just steer away from) are my BFF--Cheetos and little Debby snack cakes aren't helping either but they taste sooo good! Lol
  • It's totally normally to feel the shock especially since you said that uou battled an ED in the past.

I worked out like a freaking maniac pre pregnancy.. I was super lean.

So seeing my body now compared to before can play some tricks on the mind. But I'll tell you that I gained 25.5 lbs since pre pregnancy and my extended family is constantly in shock as to where the weight went.

So don't worry about the scale so much bc I went through EXACTLY what you're going through a couple weeks back.

Most of the weight went to my boobs which were a full B to what now seems like an overflowing DD. The butt and the hips.

Ofcourse clear this woth your Dr. But if you worked out befire pregnancy the 2nd trimester is a good time ti start up again.

Walk as much as you can,

do some weight training (even super light weights- but start with 5-10lbs less then what you were doing pretty pregnancy and work up from there)

and drink A LOT of water. I'm up to 4000ml a day!

And most importantly eat whole based non processed foods. Replace sugar with fruits and carbs with slow burning foods to keep you full but the water intake will do much of the work and load up your greens. When we eat dinner I eat my salad out of the bowl it's prepared in. A handful won't cut it.

And rest assured IF you breastfeed the weight will melt off. Your body will be working so hard to produce the milk that you will be constantly burning calories.

Love yourself and be mindful. Try not to restrict the quantity of the food.. I stead change the quality and your habits. And know that the feelings that you are having are not only yours. It's normal and it's alright.
  • @Knottie1443924966 love everything you're saying here except for the weight melting off if you breastfeed. Even if you do everything correctly some women's bodies don't lose the weight while breastfeeding. I didn't lose weight until after I stopped breast feeding with my first. It was like my body switched from baby mode back to normal; around when I got my first cycle after stopping BF'ing. Yes, you burn a bunch of calories while BF'ing but everyone's body chemistry is different.
  • I'm feeling the struggling as well with this pregnancy.  But, I have to remind myself that each pregnancy is completely different.  I am up 15 lbs all together at my last appointment.  The doctors have told me that they want me to be between 15-30lbs this pregnancy.  At the end of the day, I tell myself it is about the baby being healthy and after he or she is born, I will have a plan to get back into shape again.  I am hoping to start exercising again since my MS has died down.

  • I have already gained up to 10 pounds (or more) and I'm 17 weeks. My doctor says it's not too much but he also says that we gain more pounds per month on the lasts months of pregancy. So he just says to watch what I eat. I've been craving sweets and I'm not usually a sweet tooth. You know what I say to myself? After this baby, I'm not planning on having more so I'll get to my ideal weight after. And I'll fix my legs (spider veins). And I'll fix my face (dark spots). And other stuff that it only makes sense to deal with after having kids.

Same here. After baby, I'm getting a total makeover ahah

I thought this too as I lost a lot of weight while BF'ing. But I guess you're right, every body is different.

  • Everyone is so different with post baby weight loss in general. I have friends who lost weight rapidly add supplemented or formula fed. I have friends who kept their fluff exclusively breastfeeding. I breastfed for 21 months and hit my prepregnancy weight around 8 months pp and continued to lose 15 pounds over the following year. It's different for everyone. I just don't want to give breastfeeding moms false hope or add to the myriad of difficult emotions we face after pregnancy.
  • I gained 55 lbs with my first and I was horrified. I didn't eat like crazy, or all the time. In fact, I was super sick for the first half. My OB said that some women just gain weight while pregnant, and some don't, and while it's a good idea to eat in moderation, it doesn't always make a huge difference.

Having said that, after she was born and I was home, my gain was nearer to 20 pounds left to lose. I was able to take off all but about 9 of that, but ended up getting pregnant before I did.

Don't stress too much, it all works out!

  • I was 142 when I got pregnant the last time around and checked into the hospital at 207. I was mortified. But 30lbs came off in 2 weeks because I had so much swelling! The other 30 came off in the next 6 months. This time I gained 20 lbs by 20 weeks, so I'm not sure what's going to happen but I'm not stressing too much. It came off before and I'm sure it will come off again. Also none of that time did I work out but I did cut out all dairy, casein, and whey because I was breastfeeding and my daughter had a milk protein intolerance, so I attribute I lot of my weight loss to that.
