U/S showed enlarged kidney. Anyone else have this?

The title pretty much explains it all, but being the super worrier that I am and the quiet tech, I'm so anxious about my doctors call and what to do next. The tech also couldn't get many good views of the heart. I'm just leaving feeling worried and deflated. Has anyone else had to get follow up U/S?

  • Our ultrasound was pretty much the same experience, except the ultrasound doctor came right in to talk to us and calm us down (not that the tech said anything to cause concern). His kidneys measured just above the threshold which the doctor said was very low (it was like .4 and he measured .44). We have to go back at 32-34 weeks to have his kidneys rechecked in an ultrasound. The biggest cause for concern is urine backing up through his kidneys, but he said 65-75% of cases resolve by birth. Within the first month, another 15-20% will resolve without medical intervention. At this point, the baby would follow up with our pediatrician for additional testing. If medical interventions are necessary, they're very minimal with limited complications. As for his heart, I have a follow up ultrasound on Tuesday to see if they can grab a better look at his heart. He just wasn't in a favorable position to see all the details.

The doctor was really reassuring and didn't even take us in his office, because this was essentially a non-issue compared to other issues he sees on ultrasounds. It's still stressful, but I think having more information helped calm me down. Hopefully you'll know more soon!

  • From what I've heard, it tends to resolve itself, and your baby would just need a few follow-ups post birth. Really hoping everything gets better! Thinking of you.
  • Hydronephrosis runs in my family and they always monitor it, but it hasn't caused any real problems for us.  My daughter had it but this baby apparently doesn't which was actually surprising to me.  With my daughter we did do a renal u/s after she was born and they said she might be prone to UTIs, but she's only ever had one and it was easily treated with antibiotics. Try not to worry too much!

Were her kidneys enlarged? At what point could they tell it was hydronephrosis instead of another cause? Was it prenatal or neonatal?

  • Hydronephrosis is the swelling of the kidneys so I don't know why they diagnosed that instead of just saying enlarged.  Maybe because one was more affected than the other so they knew they weren't just large?   I guess I don't really know how they differentiate between the two or if there really even is a difference.  Anyway, they said they couldn't get good pictures at my 20 week u/s so I went back at 21 weeks and that's when we got the initial diagnosis.  Then they monitored my amniotic fluid to make sure it didn't get too low which would be an indication the kidneys weren't working.  Then we had u/s when she was a few months old and they said there was still some swelling but no indication the kidneys weren't working so they said she's good unless she starts getting symptoms like lots of UTIs or blood in the urine.

  • My first had this, but it resolved itself after birth.

*lurking from Feb 2017* With my DS his 20 week ultrasound showed enlarged kidneys. They did another ultrasound at 27 weeks and it appeared to clear up but then at my 32 week ultrasound (I had gestational diabetes so I got a lot of ultrasounds) they were enlarged again. My son was born with enlarged kidneys and still has them however he has no problems associated with them. We go to the urologist every six months for a check up and they are gradually improving, The urologist said there is no point in doing surgery as he isn't having any problems. My DS is 19 months old so even if they don't clear up the outcome can be good. I was worried too but I kept reminding myself that it could have been Something much worse like a heart defect. Hope that helps a little.
