Curly knotted baby hair

any advice for baby girl's girl which is curly and knotted after each nap and an absolute dread to comb through after her bath and before bedtime? I find myself almost taking out chunks of hair when trying to comb through it!
I have tried natural stuff like coconut oil.
I know they have baby detangling spray - I got the suave one which is "paraban free" but not sure if there any other natural or better product suggestions since it's prob something I'll use regularly for her?

Re: Curly knotted baby hair

  • Target has some really good kids products for "natural" hair as they call it.  My nieces have very tight curly hair and thats what we use for them.  The sprays and oils are really good for helping to detangle and keep the curls.

  • My son has thick curly hair don't let these photos fool you, it's pretty high maintanence for a BABY. Lol I use lots of conditioner during bath time and deranged with a wide tooth comb,  this is much better than a regular brush. You have to use a wide tooth comb , I have curly hair also and this is LAW. less breakage and pain. Rinse the conditioner out but leaving a little on helps later on. CURLY HAIR NEEDS MOISTURE.

After bath I put a quarter sized amount of  Shae Moisture Curl & Style Milk all over his hair and make sure to distribute it while it's still wet.

It moisturizes his hair and keeps his curls in a good pattern for about 3-4 days... Sometimes when he sleeps it will get a little out of control it u can use a spray bottle with just water to activate the product again.

    i found it in target
  • That looks just like baby girls hair! Ok I'll try it out, how often do you condition hair at bath time? And how often do you apply that product. I've been trying to use natural detangling sprays like Johnson and Johnson or suave (makes baby detangling spray)... But find I have to use it everyday! And I'll often have to spray hair after naps with water to re-activate it because it knots again - she tends to body rock/head bump against the crib bumper which knots her hair so bad sometimes it's matted to her head when she Wakes up! I hate having to use sprays over and over in her baby Virgin hair lol. I usually rinse her hair at bath time but only apply conditioner once or twice  a week ...my husband and I don't have curly hair so I'm clueless on what to do with hers, she's got spiral curls.
Thanks for the feedback and advice !!
  • You should use conditioner everytime you wash her hair. I wash babies hair twice a week. The product keeps his hair maintained for about 3-4 days , so when I see it's starting to look rough again, I just wash and condition his hair again and reapply the product. I'll reiterate about the comb, it's essential when maintaining curly hair in either adult or child. Only detangle when hair is wet and has conditioner in it. Rinse a little out but go ahead and leave some in. Ohhhh and the towel ... Try not to towel dry , use an old tshirt and lightly pat dry hair. I've found that the towel tends to make the curls frizzy.  While the hair is still damp apply the product all over and be generous.

I hope this works ! My parents had no idea how to care for my hair either and I looked a hot mess up until middle school lolololol
  • I wash/condition my 2 year old's hair every 2-3 days. I "comb" her hair using my fingers. I also keep half water/half conditioner in a spray bottle to use to style her hair daily as needed.
  • Cute baby's hair @onlyonealejandra!  My LO has curly hair like that too, just not quite as thick.
I use curly kids product.  I think i bought the set of 4 for $20 and it included shampoo, conditioner, a curling lotion and a deep conditioner cream that I use once a week.  My LO's hair gets very frizzy quickly so I shampoo/condition every other day.  I use the curling lotion every after washing and each morning when I comb it.
I have heard that "the wet brush" is a great detangling tool, but have been hesitant because everything i read says not to use brushes.  I know a girl who has 3 boys with very curly hair and she swears by it.

No problem @onlyonealejandra!  I bought them on the curlykids website.
https://curlykidshaircare.com/  They have them on amazon too but prices are better on the product site, i think.  Hope you find something that works!
The 4pk is on amazon but is $10 more than buying them individually on curlykids.  I got the detangling shampoo, conditioner, curl defining lotion (my fave for use in the morning to get rid of the bed head) and the deep conditioner (i use 1x/week)
