Missed miscarriage or wrong dates?

Hello,

I am currently pregnant with my first child. I paid for a private scan last week at what I though was 7 weeks and 3 days but I was told that I was only measuring 5 weeks and 3 days and no heartbeat could be detected. They have said that I need to wait 2 weeks and come back for another scan to determine exactly what has happened. The doctor did not seem optimistic and said that this could be a missed miscarriage, but there was a small chance that I could have got my dates wrong (I have quite irregular periods).

Now I'm just left in Limbo land, waiting to see what happens. I can't sleep for worry. Has anyone come across this? Is there any chance at all that my dates could simply be wrong?

    This is why most OB offices do not like to give ultrasounds this early. Since you have irregular periods, you could just be off on your timing. At 5w many people do not see a heartbeat, it is too early. When I had my first ultrasound BB was 10 days small from our EDD. At this point (22w) she has caught up and is right on track. Try to keep calm, stress isn't good for pregnancy. I know it is scary, I freaked too, but try to focus on something else for awhile and keep your fingers crossed that everything is o.k.

    Like the PP said, this is why most doctors wait until around 8 weeks before your first appointment. Were you temping to confirm ovulation? You could have ovulated later than you thought or it could unfortunately be what your doctor suggested. There isn't anyway to tell until you go for your next doctors visit. No one else's experience has any bearing on yours. Good luck and I hope it's just you ovulated later than you thought.

    I went for my 1st scan at 6w 2d (checkingnfor ectopic) there was no hb and they dated me at 4w 2d. They sent me home to wait and the followup scan 2 weeks later showed a healthy embryo with hb.  If you have irregular periods you most likely just are behind. If not, im sorry. Try to relax and gl

    Thank you so much, I feel a lot better. I will just see what happens when I go back for the second scan. It was my fault really for going for such an early scan. I could have saved all this stress and worry. Xx
