Cloth Diapering

There have been a few questions about cloth diapering on the boards so I decided to be bossy and create a thread

For STMs, how many cloth diapers did you buy?  What brands?  How often do you wash them?  How have they held up?  Give us a rundown!  Basically, pimp your stash.

FTMs (maybe not yet - but after you've processed all this info) you can post what you are thinking of buying and get feedback!

Re: Cloth Diapering

  • I'm curious about diaper services. We currently live on an island in southern southeast Alaska, but are desperately hoping to move in the next few months - waiting to hear on a few jobs hubby interview for. ANYWAY, we have next to no options up here, BUT, I've heard diaper services exist elsewhere and are very practical. What about cost? Do you have to pay dearly for the convenience?

Both of us have pretty sensitive skin, so I'm assuming the LO will, too. Is cloth diapering best for sensitive little bums?

    Thanks for any insight!

  • We used Gro-Vias because I love the velcro and they seemed to fit my son the best.  I was a SAHM at the time and did diaper laundry every 3 days or so.  They held up great and I'm looking forward to using them with this LO too.

I referred to kellyscloset.com a lot when I was first getting started.  I also have a local cloth diapering store near me that helped me out a ton.  I was able to rent diapers from them to figure out which kind was the best for us.

  • Warning: Potentially Long Post Ahead

    INFANT STAGE
I have 36 orange edges prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers.  Probably didn't need that many but it was so nice to have so we could stretch out diaper washing to every 3 days when needed.  Infants go through a LOT of diapers.  I also had some orange workhorses, but we ended up not liking them as much.

I also have 24 yellow edges for when DD got a little bigger, but not big enough yet for the all-in-ones.

For infant covers, I felt like the ones with snaps held up better than the velcro ones, but they were more expensive for sure.  Maybe six covers total?  Blueberries were our favorite, and we had some thirsties too.  One pack of 5 snappis was enough too.

We've done cloth wipes from the beginning and really love the bumpkins flannel wipes: https://www.amazon.com/Bumkins-Reusable-Flannel-Wipes-Natural/dp/B006J2U4T0

I tried a bunch of different ways to wet the wipes and it turns out simpler is better, we just use a spray bottle and spray them with plain old water as needed.

We have several planetwise diaper pail liners and wet bags, and just put the liner in a trash can.  For infants, leaving the trash can OPEN was great.  For smelly toddler diapers... not so much.

    AND BEYOND
We have a mixture of Bum Genius Elementals - which we send into daycare along with a wet bag each day, and the Bum Genius Pocket diapers which she sleeps in since we can double/triple stuff them.

We have a diaper sprayer attached to the toilet, though that wasn't needed at first at all, not until solid foods are introduced.

We also love the Grovia Magic Stick for rashes, although if a rash looks really angry we switch to disposables for a day and use Butt Paste.

  • I have about 50-60 one size bumgenius. Elementals, freestyles and regular stuffing covers. I used charcoal inserts and double them up at night. For the first few weeks I have a small stash (about 16-20) kawaii green baby diapers in size newborn.  We rarely get rashes with cloth, but if we do we use bordeaux's butt paste and a disposable overnight and it's usually gone (that stuff is magic!)

We washed on Wednesdays and Saturdays but now that my DD is older and using less per day we wash once a week, usually on the weekend.  We use tide free and gentle.

I boight 99% of my diapers lightly used (used less than 4 months) and they are all still in perfect condition. I did have just ONE Velcro bumgenius diaper and I got rid of it because the Velcro kept scratching my DDs thighs, so we have all snap diapers.

  • I have Grovia, a couple of Smartbottoms AIO and some Thirstiest AIO. We got the AIO for daycare, and now they are my favourite. We didn't CD until she fit OS diapers last time, but we will CD from birth this time.

For laundry we keep it simple. We wash every other day. We do a pre-wash with no detergent, a long warm wash with 1tbsp Persil and and extra rinse. Then in the dryer/on the line to dry.

Some places will recommend extreme amounts of detergent, but most people don't need that much. A great place for laundry assistance is Cloth Diaper Tech Support-CD Love and Advice on Facebook.

  • I love cloth diapers! I'm a big fan of prefolds and covers for newborns. We have 36 newborn prefolds and that let us wash every other day or every 2 days. We also have 24 small size prefolds. Green Mountain Diapers makes excellent prefolds and has a slew of diapering advice too. I don't always love their wash advice though.

I thought I'd love pocket diapers and bought a ton of "China cheapie" brands. Alva, Sunbaby, Diaper Safari. I liked Sunbaby the most, and they were only about $5 a diaper, but I discovered I HATE pocket diapers. I dislike having to stuff them, and like unstuffing them even less. DS poops over the opening almost every time, leaving me to have to pick open a poop filled diaper to pull the insert out. I hate spraying them too. So many folds and crevices to hide poop.

I went back to prefolds and covers for a while (my favorite covers are Flips, Thirsties, and Bummis) before discovering Best Bottoms. They are the perfect diapering system for us. They're known as an all in two diaper. They are a fully wipeable cover with no annoying cloth flaps, and have snap in inserts in hemp, bamboo, or microfiber. They fit super trim, especially with the natural fiber inserts. They are also easy to pack on the go because they're trim and can roll up and snap together in a little ball. They are super easy to spray and have double gussets on the legs to hold in leaks. I sold all my pockets to buy Best Bottoms. I do like velcro Flips at night though, because they're easy to bulk up with extra inserts.

I use regular detergent (right now it's Kirkland powder, but I've also used Foca and Gain) in a reasonable amount. I also use a capful of Calgon water softener because we have really bad hard water. I haven't had any major wash issues.
  • I half-assed cloth diapered.  I saved money, but enjoyed the convenience of disposables too.  We cloth diapered at home, but if I was going to be out for longer than 2 potential diaper changes, then I used sposies.  I also used them at night because I didn't like the bulkiness of having to double up.  We stopped cloth diapering around 1 1/2 because he grew out of the AIOs and I didn't feel like buying more.  Lazy, I know.  It's been almost a year and I have spent way more money on disposables than I would have if we cloth diapered still.  No daycares in our area will cloth diaper, so I have to use disposables for that too.  I really like the Honest Co diapers because they are relatively environmentally friendly and do not get squishy.  That said, here is what we used.

I used Kawaii Baby diapers and - what are they called? Charlie Bananas?  AIOs both the velcro and the snap kind.  I found each worked best for a different stage or growth spurt.  I do have 12 newborn diapers (can't remember the brand) but that is barely a day's worth!  I will be getting 12 more this time around to total 24.  In the newborn stage, I washed every day.  Once we got into AIOs I washed every 3 days.  I also used the planetwise diaper liners (we only have 2 and that is plenty for us) in a plain 13 gal trash can with a lid.  I LOVE the travel wetbags too!  I use those to hold wet swimsuits and just about anything!  For diaper rashes, we used coconut oil, but really - there were almost no diaper rashes when we were cloth diapering!  I'm looking forward to doing it again and hope to be a little less lazy about it this time around!

  • I really like all this information.... Even though half of it sounds like a foreign language to me, I appreciate the insight!
  • I agree with mokay! I have no idea what half of this means but I appreciate all the information!!

  • What are you having trouble understanding? I can try to translate!
  • NaturallyThriftyMom on YouTube has a cloth diapering 101 series that is super informative.
  • Dirty Diaper Laundry is another good source.
  • I remember feeling the same way (confused) when I first started learning about cloth diapering.  The vocab and all the types of diapers was completely overwhelming at first.  Definitely check out the sources that @lovelongdog06  and @LittleChick2 pointed out and see if you can find a cloth diapering store in your area where you can see actual diapers.

  • Going to a store is a great idea! Ours even has free cloth diaper classes. I did a lot of online research before I bought my first diapers. There are groups on Facebook too. There are a lot of brands to choose from, and everyone has their favorites that work best for their baby, just like disposables. It can be overwhelming, but they all have the same basic function.
  • I'm no expert, but I've been using Charlie Banana diapers since LO was 4 months old and we love them. They are OS and have worked great for us as they are super easy.  I even got my husband to use them! We have around 20 and launder about every three days. It's certainly not for the faint of heart if you can't handle poo, there's nothing glamorous about it,but I like to think I'm being more eco-friendly and saving money in the long run. Easy to clean using a sprayer connected to your toilet to remove any debris before washing. And drying outside in the sun really does bleach stains!
  • For those of you who don't speak cloth, OS means one size. A diaper that fits a baby from about 8 lbs to potty training.
  • FTMs, I just started watching the Cloth Diapering 101 series mentioned by @LittleChick2 and I highly recommend.  It's a lot of videos but it really goes in-depth so far (I've only watched Lesson 1 and am starting Lesson 2).  First video here.
