Baby Clothes - How much is TOO much?

Hey Ladies,

I have been very vocal with my BTDT mommy friends, and asking them for their hand-me-downs....well let's just say they stepped up to the request :flushed:

I now have:

- a dresser full of newborn, 0-3, & 3 months
- a 60L tote full to the point of the lid barely closes of 3-6 month
- a 60L tote where the lid can't close of 6-12 months
- a giant bag of 12+ months (I'm about to separate it into 2 totes - 12m - 24m, and 24m+)

Plus I still have 3 loads of laundry of clothes.

Hubby said that we have officially too much and we should go through it and give some of it away, but I'm feeling that 3-6 months is a long time, and the baby will go through multiple outfit changes a day, so having more isn't necessarily a bad thing, it means we might not have to do laundry every day.

What do you guys think?  We have too much and should give some of it away (or sell it)? Or get a bigger bin and keep them?

  • Hahahahaha @LauraPCOS that's SO MUCH CLOTHES!  But what do I know?  I don't know anything! :)

I just was going through my newborn outfits and counted 17 NB onesies and snap sides.... and 8 little leggings, and I was like, I think we have plenty! lol.

It sounds like a lot. We registered for very little. First, we don't know the sex, but secondly, we expect a ton of hand-me-downs after the birth. We will keep what we like and donate or give back the rest. I plan to wash baby clothes with ours (we use free & clear detergent already) rather than separately, so I don't anticipate needing a ton of clothes to prevent doing laundry--we do ours about weekly anyway. Do you really want baby clothes to sit around with spit-up stains on them, anyway?

  • Hahah dang that's a LOT of clothes! I have 2 drawers and a few things hanging in the closet for newborn-12 months, and I think we have plenty. Hopefully I'm not sorely mistaken when she finally gets here? Or I'll just be weeping into my pile of laundry that I have to do every day...
  • I thought we had a lot so far, but you just blew me out of the water LOL

  • I just put DD's first year of clothing in storage. We wore most pieces and I had 16 tubs and 4 Medium size boxes (this includes shoes and accessories). But I'm a self-proclaimed clothing whore soooooo...

    The boys have nothing. Haha.

  • Now I feel like I don't have any clothes. I've been fairly fortunate that people haven't really bought that but have bought the "stuff" instead. But now I'm like ahhhhh I need more clothes! I don't have any baby leggings to go with all these onesies. At lest everything from 0-6 months is clean. I still have a couple of showers so maybe I shouldn't freak out yet!

  • That's a lot. I have one trash bag of newborn and 0-3 months clothes for this guy, that's it. There were soooo many things my daughter never even wore because I got so many clothes! However, some kids stay in a certain size range for a long time, so it just depends on the kid. Newborn probably will last a few weeks and then you'll move on.

I am in the same situation with hand me downs and gift. I went through everything and pulled out things that I didn't care for. I hung NB and 0-3/put them in the dresser. I separated the rest by size and put them in the flat tubs that can slide under beds. We have 3 of those completely full. There's no way he will wear everything but he won't ever go without either. The hardest part was organizing and figuring out how to store it all.

I feel like that is a lot of clothes! I feel like with hand me downs- I would go through them and only hold onto what I like or what I think I would put my baby in. Things that are stained- you will find some- I donated or threw out.

Hand me downs can also be a little tricky because a lot of things shrink if they were heavily worn. Some brands like Mini Boden, Hanna Andersson and Gap (at least I didn't find it with Gap) don't shrink too much. But I found brands like Gerber ran really small. And I find that Old Navy really shrinks. For example- we were handed down a bunch of Old Navy items and I kept a lot of the 2T- and when my son turned 2 I could barely get them on him and he's tall but extremely small. He's 3 next week and just 30lbs. But brand new Old Navy items were roomy on him. I also find pajamas and things you were a lot from Carters shrink as well. So when you go through the clothes you might want to pull some of the larger sized items out earlier.

We didn't do crazy outfit changes- I guess we didn't experience that many huge blow outs. But I also did laundry right away and any blow out I had- we washed or at least soaked immediately. I also found that there were some types of clothing I preferred. Like I like zip up pajamas- not ones that button. I like more comfortable clothing for my newborn so you won't see my newborn in jeans. But that is kind of stuff you will figure out as you have the baby and you can kind of weed out items from there.

Edit- also as PP mentioned- some sizes you go through quicker and some last longer. DS1 was pretty true to clothing sizes for age before he turned 1. But he wore a few 24M leggings (smaller than a 2T) up until the spring of 16' and he turned 2 in the summer of 15'.

I'm not buying anything past about 6-9 months because I don't know what season we'll be in.  For now, I'm mostly focusing on fall/winter clothes up to about 6 months, and I hardly bought any newborn clothes.  I think we have maybe 6 newborn outfits, but this baby will be big like my daughter and she hardly fit into newborn clothes.

I also found that with my first, complicated cutesy clothes were never used.  I stuck with comfortable onesies and leggings or one piece outfits that didn't have a million snaps or just had zippers.  There were dresses and frilly clothes that literally didn't get worn even once.  And outfits with hoodies I was too paranoid to put her in, even though they were super cute.  Less is more, they outgrow sizes very quickly.  But I've definitely bought a ton of clothes, so I should take my own advice. ;)  I think even 50 outfits in one size sounds cray.  Unless you're counting jammies in that too I guess?

ETA- Keep in mind, you'll also probably want to buy some things as baby grows.  Don't feel like you need to stock up on everything before he/she gets here.  Stores will come out with their Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc clothes and they're hard to resist!

  • I agree with keeping it all for now. You don't know how big your baby will be or how fast they'll grow. My DD was in newborn clothes for 8 weeks. You also have to consider pee and poop accidents. Sometimes babies wear 3-4 outfits in one day. Different brands will also fit differently.

  • Nb lasts maybe 3 weeks to 5
0-3 expect them out of before they hit the 3 but some go after
3-6 about the sAmerican out of before they hit the 6

My won and daughter both had way to much I was giving away thing with tags this baby has all hand me downs up to 6 months. The newborn stuff o do have is maybe  6 outfits we have more 0-3. The bigger they get the more they need between drool puke poop and food 2 to 4 a day by 3 months I'd say.
  • It sounds like too much to me. I would go through and give what you don't love away. Or return to the giver. If they were all handed down from friends, I don't think it's right to sell them.

  • We have an insane amount of clothes as well. Being a FTM I'm not sure, but now that you mention it I may go through the stuff we were given for free and see about donating it because we have an excessive amount!
  • Ummmm I just went upstairs and counted and we have nowhere near that mich. I'm a ftm and thought we had plenty, but now I'm not so sure...
  • It's a lot of clothes. Babies grow really really fast the first year. There's a good chance you won't wear a lot of it. That said, wash it & hold onto it, but don't feel like you need to go and buy more. You can always give it away or consign it once baby has outgrown it (or save the cute or gender neutral stuff for next LO).
  • I have officially put everything away, and everything has a spot so it looks like we'll keep things.  If it doesn't get worn, it's okay - but at least it's there if we need it.  I know it's probably way more than we need, but like you ladies said, who knows how big he'll be, what stains we'll get, etc.

  • So I just went and bought 2 new sleepers. A 3 month and a 6 month. I feel a little better now?

  • Hmm, I have like 10 newborn outfits and 15 0-3 months and I thought that was a lot... I'm 5'10 and DH is 6'3" so I figured we wouldn't need much in those sizes...
Guess I better let DH know he's likely going to have to go on a baby clothes shopping spree once we know what size our little guy is!

  • With the exception of newborn, we have about a full tote of each size range from our first son.

Part of this is he seemed to be in between sizes during the weather changes, so we have the same size in summer and fall clothes and so on, then the same size with fall and winter, etc.

However, It does make it handy this time around since the boys will be almost 6 months apart.  With taking out all our clothes it means we'll buy less this time, maybe a few pants and a winter jacket, but that's about it.

  • I'm having the same problem. People are giving me lots of hand me downs.   I appreciate the thought but honestly a lot of the stuff I'm getting is heavily worn and not the same season that my baby will probably be in when he's that size.  I don't wanna turn anything down and I'm sure I'll be happy to have a lot when Im going through 3-4 outfits daily.  Right now, it's just overwhelming to go through it all and sort through what I want to donate and what I want to keep.  My MIL has basically bought out Carters, Kohls and Target so I have a ton of new stuff too.   I'm blessed that I don't have to worry about buying a lot of clothes but I don't wanna have too much either
  • I only have onesies in 0-3 month size.. Think I should buy some newborn ones? Ive got plenty of newborn pajamas just no onesies.
  • @MKJeffrey2002 that's been me too. As much as I appreciate it, I feel overwhelmed at the moment. I didn't even have my shower yet, next Sunday, and I'm sure I'll get a ton of stuff then too. I told the person that I'll let them know what I needed after my shower but he brought me in a whole bunch yesterday, in which he said it was all clean and it wasn't. :/ I don't want to sound ungrateful.

Same here. I'm 5'10, DH is 6'4. I have, like, 3 newborn outfits. The u/s tech has already commented on how long she was, so yeah, we'll probably be in newborn for a week, if that!

  • @sportiegrl1213 yeah it's so hard to turn it down when they are offering but it's the same case for us.   I'm happy people think of us but I don't have the time or patience to go through it all right now.

I think jammies are good for now.  At least you have something to put your LO in and if you feel your baby is sweating too much, or you want to put them in an outfit but the 0-3 months are too big, you can buy what you need.  I don't have a lot of newborn clothes, but a lot of 0-3 and 3 months. I figured this little guy won't be in NB long so why stock up (even if it means I have to do laundry a bit more frequently).

  • I've washed and put away all the clothes I've bought at garage sales & consignment...but I can't bring myself to wash the new stuff yet - I hate to take the tags off and wash and then her not end up wearing half of it. And my shower is not until next weekend so I'm sure I'll get quite a few clothes there too. Any suggestions on this?
  • @Kaessi - if there's certain outfits that you especially like, I'd wash those. If there's stuff you especially dislike (hint: you will hate button up sleepers for example, zip ups are far superior and people who buy button ups should be forced to change jammies on a purple poopy newborn every night for a week and struggle to find the correct snaps etc) then it's a good idea to return/exchange after your shower for stuff that will be better.
