Weekly Pregnancy Chatter 8/15

This is the weekly chatter thread to... you know... talk about pregnancy and stuff. Wondering what everybody's opinion on doctors vs midwifes vs doulas? Find a good cure for something that's been ailing you?  Just had one of those "holy smokes I'm GROWING a HUMAN like it's a potted plant or something, but INSIDE MY BODY" moments?  Have a rando ask when the baby is due and you're like, "Wait, I'm not even showing yet, not sure if I should be polite or rude at this point"?   Whatever comments or stories or questions or etcetera you got that don't quite fit into the other organizational threads, this is probably the spot.

Re: Weekly Pregnancy Chatter 8/15

  • I think we will be announcing this weekend. I'm legitimately showing already! So we are taking DD to my nurses appointment on Wednesday (we have no sitter) and we will be telling her at that time. (I'm still hoping for a doppler or something to "show" my DD) Then we will let our parents know. This weekend we are also probably visiting some family out of state so it would be a perfect opportunity to tell them. Then next week I tell at work. I just want to get it out there so I don't have to be so sneaky, even though I'm pretty sure a few people have noticed at work. We are 95% women in the office so it's hard to hide it from them.

  • We ended up telling our families this weekend. I feel really relieved for some reason. Everyone took the news well, and now I don't have to make up excuses as to why I'm grumpy.

I wasn't thinking today and wore a form-fitting shirt. I feel like I'm really obvious because I'm short, so my belly looks big from the bloat. Everyone who says you show earlier with your second is right. They are so right.

@MrsBakes I wasn't going to say anything, but... Are you really under the impression that your 7 week old embryo (that's the size of a blueberry) is really making you "legitimately" show? I know second time around means you show earlier, but when they say that they mean in the early 2nd tri/week 14ish. Your uterus won't even start rising out of your pelvic cavity until sometime between week 11 and 13.

    So...

I assumed I would get "the look" lol But I was actually showing at 7 weeks even with my first. I know it's hard to believe based on some very logical explanations, but if I posted a pic here, you'd see it. I've always had a very flat stomach. Now, there is a pointy, very obvious bump in my lower abdomen, so not just the bloat (which shows up at the end of the day and then I look nice and round. I'm not BSing I'm serious.

At 14 weeks, I looked as big as my friend, who was 25 weeks. So it just all depends.

But I totally get the questioning look.

OK I was able to attach this pic. This is me at 6w3d. if I'm crazy, please do tell me, but I think I'm showing LOL

Nope, sorry, I'm pretty sure that's still bloat/blump/water weight/organs/whatever you want to call it. Unless you can find and palpate your uterus (which you can't do before it rises out of the pelvic cavity) then it's not the baby yet. Usually your midwife or OB will do that for you at your first appointment and tell you where the top of your uterus is, if they can find it.

Edited to add after photo, yep that's still the bloat/blump because it's in the wrong spot for your uterus. Until at least 10 weeks minimum your uterus is still hiding behind the pelvic bone (I was told approximately the top of where your pubic hair starts).

@MrsBakes Yeah, that's bloat. I looked that same way at 7-9 weeks. I'm naturally skinny. The "bump" was pointy. I thought it looked like a bump too. It wasn't and only in hindsight could I be sure of that. This is my second pregnancy as well.

Thanks! well call it what you want, or whatever it is that's showing, my stomach is noticably bigger than usual so even my 4.5 YO said I look like I have a baby in my belly. LOL :) So... since something is obviously bulging, and I'm getting the looks we will be announcing. LOL

I need some good excuses for not jet skiing or going on a boat on Friday! Our staff always has a huge party at the lake and I haven't thought of a decent excuse as to why I'm not drinking or boating!

  • Are you not supposed to go on a boat with an ear infection? @TheJerilu
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @cookies754 If you have an inner ear infection, the doc is usually like, "Can you please just avoid all water?"  There's a risk of getting blasted with the spray from the boat which might have some yuck in it, and there's also the risk of somebody tossing you in.  Too much water pressure with an inner ear infection can cause a blowout and deafness.

Any reason in particular you're avoiding the boat?  Is it a smaller speedboat and they drive with the intent to shake up the passengers on the wakes?  If it's a larger boat or just ferrying you should be fine.

  • @TheJerilu that's the perfect excuse then!

Yes, unfortunately it's a smaller boat and the last year I was on it, he went pretty quickly and was hitting all of the wakes. It was very bumpy and I was definitely jostled around, which was obviously fine then, but I read it's not a good idea while pregnant. I may be overly cautious, but oh well. Thanks for the help!

Ah, yeah, smaller and more jostley ones are a bit more questionable (although this early it isn't as bad, some docs will even give the OK to ride roller coasters in the first trimester).

  • @TheJerilu genius!  Way better than my thought of saying you're just hungover @cookies754!
  • Taylor72 That's a great idea. I've seen and participated on BTDT(Been There Done That) Mom's Q&A for STM+ to FTM so FTM can ask any questions they may have.

  • @Taylor72 I think that's a great idea!
  • @neikoda and @clover28 the one on D16 is absolutely hilarious and definitely helpful.  I hope we get one started here! :)

  • @Taylor72   I'll start one! Stay tuned...
  • BTDT is awesome and needs to be a weekly thing.  I could learn so much from you STM moms.

Speaking of which, how do you keep from going crazy with all the "XXX during pregancy will help/hurt your baby!" news stories that I am now constantly noticing.  See below for example-

  • @TheJerilu What baby book do you have?  I've been meaning to get one!  I have a memory book from our wedding that I love and want to do something similar.
