Late period, negative pregnancy test

Hi ladies,

I just restarted my period for the first time last month. I am still breastfeeding so that wasn't a concern. It was a normal period, lasted 5 days with no issues. This month I am now a week late and have taken multiple pregnancy tests which were all negative. Maybe my period is just irregular due to the breastfeeding but I hate not knowing for sure. Have any of you had a negative pregnancy test but were actually pregnancy? At what point would you say a hpt would be positive? I can't remember from my previous pregnancy and the answers are all over the place online! Thanks for any personal experience with this!

Re: Late period, negative pregnancy test

  • It will be irregular more than likely. I EPed up until this last month and still got my period back 4 mos post partum. It was irregular for several months after that but has now been right on the list 2 months. I felt like each month I just got closer and closer to a 28 day cycle. I wouldn't be too worried :)

  • Thanks! I just wish I knew for sure, which is impossible. I am sure it will work itself out!
  • @dmbfan46835 did you period eventually start every month but not when it was supposed to? Or did it go away again for a few months? I just wonder when I should consider seeing my OB if it doesn't start again anytime in the next few weeks! Thanks

It was WAY off the first couple of months. Close to 50 days the first two times I got I I think? I started tracking it on my calendar because I was also freaked out. I took so many pregnancy tests!
  • Try not to worry, love. I'm sure it's just your body re-adjusting.
  • This happened to me too. It may mean you ovulated late. I suggest tracking your cycles (if you're not already). There are a bunch of free period tracking apps, Period Diary is a good one, for Fertility Finder if you're TTC.
  • I am still breastfeeding, but I got my period back 5 months post-partum. Normal first period and following periods, but my cycle length was all over the place. The first cycle was 39 days, the next was 26, the next was 41, and the next was 57 (with random spotting in between the last one but not enough to call a period). Prior to pregnancy, my cycles were very regular at 27-29 days apart.

When breastfeeding (and for awhile after weaning), your hormones are all over the place and trying to regulate themselves, so a late period is very, very normal.

Are you using some type of protection, or are you actively trying to get pregnant? We're using protection until we want to start trying for the next, so I've been pretty confident every month that my period is just late due to the random cycle lengths and hormones. But if you're actively trying or not using protection, it may be hard to know what the late period means unless you just continue to take a pregnancy test every week until you eventually get your period.

Like others said, you can also track your cycles by tracking your temp and ovulation (using an app like Fertility Friend), and that will at least give you an idea of when you ovulated and when you can expect your period to come.

    Hope that helps!
  • Thanks! I will look into those! It's definitely frustrating when you don't know for sure!
  • My cycle is so much longer than it used to be ever since I got my period back in April. Every month it's super late, I freak out, take a test, get a negative result and then get my period a week later. A negative is a negative most of the time, most likely your cycle is being funky, but I understand instantly going into panic mode when it doesn't show up on time.
  • Pregnancy test is still negative so I definitely think it's just hormones due to weaning! Hopefully my cycles get back to normal sometime after I completely wean!

Same happened to me i had no period for two months! I kept taking pregnancy test and they were negative so i went to the doctor and she took another pregnancy test and still negative so she said this happeneds after giving  birth our cycles go alittle crazy and its normal sometimes you miss periods and she also said if by the third month no period then thats to worry and go to the doctor.
  • I had this happen a couple of months ago. My period had been very rugular since about 6 weeks pp. but around 8 or 9 months for some reason it got irregular again.
