VBAC

I didn't see this on here so going to throw it out there.  Any STM attempting a VBAC?
That's my plan unless my records end up indicating that I'm not a candidate for it.  I am going from a (terrible) MD to a midwife and also considering a doula this go round.

Re: VBAC

  • I will be trying for a VBAC this time, also. We are attending a birthing center with an OB and doula present because many hospitals around us do not support VBACs. I've most certainly done my research and am super excited that we will have an experience that we didn't have last time around (twins with one baby in distress--section was required). Have you had your first appointment yet, @sngudgel?

  • I'm planning a VBAC. My son was (unexpectedly) breech.
  • Trying for a VBAC too. My son turned last min and was stuck. My OB does VBACs on "good candidates". Hopefully I'm one of those. I know the hospital does them. I'm very hopeful.

  • I'm hoping for a vbac as well. My dr says I'm a good candidate. I just can't go past 40wks. If I don't go into labor on my own she is willing to induce as long as my body is ready (starting to dilate/soft cervix). I was induced with ds at 41wks. His heart rate kept dropping because the cord was around his neck.
  • I'll be attempting a VBAC as well. My friend is my OB and she is super supportive and encouraging of it. I had an emergency c-section with my son due to developing chorioamniotitis in labor.

  • I'm attempting a VBAC as well. My OB thinks I am a good candidate but, like PP, doesn't want me to go over 40 weeks. DS was an emergency c-section because labor stopped progressing and his HR kept dropping.

  • @Breesy14 I'd look for a different OB! That sounds so wrong, like "if you're a good girl, I'll let you be in charge of your body/baby". (I realize I'm filling in a lot more emotion there than was actually stated and your doctor could truly be great, but I'm just on fire for birthing rights) There are truly supportive VBAC providers out there who will fight for you. I'd hate to be strung along with a doctor that turned out to be only VBAC tolerant, or worse, one who intends to "bait and switch".
  • @lovelongdog06 As far as I know, all hospitals use the words "good candidate" for women hoping for a VBAC. There is a very pro VBAC hospital where I am and they still need you to be a "good candidate". I totally get where you are coming from, because honestly, I think almost everyone going for a VBAC is a good candidate for one. But, it is just the terminology they use. Birth doula here, speaking from my experience.

  • @mrsstuessy and @lovelongdog06 Yes to both of those things!  Thanks for reaching out.  I really like my OB-GYN, though I've been disappointed by my experience getting my first appointment scheduled (long, boring story) she is just really booked up right now.  She has not even been accepting new patients in several years and I have to book my regular non-OB appointments about 9 months in advance to get a convenient appointment.

I actually looked for another OB just because it was so hard to book this first appointment that is coming up on Monday.  But no one in my area on my insurance will even try a VBAC.  I live in Houston (just south) very close to the medical center.  But I really want to deliver in my town instead of driving into Houston.  This is because I want my husband to be able to run home and help out with our (at the time of #2's birth) 3 year old son.  There are only two places where I can deliver here.  My current OB will do VBACs at one of the hospitals.  The other OBs (there are 4 that take my insurance) at the other hospital won't.

I do feel very "hands-tied" here.  But I am not a lie-down-and-take-it kind of person.  I'm going to my first appointment with an open mind and all my questions.  Then I will research it until I feel like an expert on the subject.  Back to my OB at that point, or I will be looking for a new OB in Houston.  I may reconsider a birthing center, but I don't like the hospitals that the 3 in my area transport to, should that be necessary.  Another factor here is cost - I am a teacher and we are on a tight budget.  Sigh.  I'm going to do everything I can to get my VBAC.  I'm also not going to forget how important a healthy baby is over delivery method.  I won't care how he or she got here once it's all over with, just that I'm holding him/her.

  • I'm thinking about it.
  • I really want to get for a vbac this time. I have big babies with big heads. My 1st was 9lbs but 18.5" long and his head was 34 cm. My dd was 7lbs15oz 18.25" and her head was 36 cm. I'm really hoping to find a doctor who will at least let me try.

  • ^ weird, I don't know why that entire post turned blue.
  • I'm very much hoping for a VBAC.  DD was breech and we didn't know it until we arrived at the hospital and I was well into transition.  It turns out that I labor quickly (and I'm hoping that's true this time around too!), so I had a "surprise" c-section as my husband calls it.  I'm going to a very VBAC friendly hospital so I should be good to go.

  • I did a vbac successfully and with no tears. Hoping to do another vaginal delivery this time around.
  • I am hoping to be given opportunity to have a TOLAC this time around.  If we can keep my blood pressure and platelets under control and my cervix actually wants to try and cooperate!! Last time I went in at 39 weeks...cervix was closed and platelets of 52....so no way would they let me even attempt a TOLAC.  Its a lot to hope for...after 2 sections...but a girl can dream!

  • update: I am a "good candidate" though there may be some additional risk because of the nature of my last labor.  Long story short - water broke before labor, was induced, labored for 30 hours, pushed for 3, baby turned and got stuck = c-section.  Dr. said, "Let's do it!  I'm definitely up for the challenge if you are!" So, that was encouraging and I'm pumped!  Going to give my ute a pep talk every night beginning at 37 weeks!  Come on, lady bits, you can do this!

  • Pep talks, Spinning Babies, chiropractic visits, eating dates, drinking red raspberry leaf tea....I plan to do it all! So glad it was a positive appointment @Breesy14
  • @breesy14 that's such great news!!

  • @breesy14 great news!  I would LOVE to try for a VBAC, unfortunately because of all the complications last time, I think it might not be the best option for me.  My Doctor agrees.  Still not completely ruling it out.  I had a terrible experience with my last c-section and I'm terrified of another!

  • The doctor told me it was entirely up to me on this and I am not even sure what I want to do. Maybe it's the fear of the unknown. I KNOW how I felt with the cesarean, the vaginal birth is still a big scary thing. I can't believe how many women told me about their crazy tearing, which made my procedure seem like the easier one. Probably an unpopular opinion, but there it is.

  • @Stephout tearing is scary but not a given! Plenty of women don't tear. Positioning (not pushing on your back) and support of the perineum are very helpful. Nothing wrong with choosing a repeat if that's what you want, but not everyone has a tearing horror story. I've heard from lots of ladies that tore but still talk about it being easier than the surgery.
  • @pinkpeoniies I wish there were a third option! I had a good c section if there is such a thing. I don't want to be recovering from another with a 2 kids though if I can help it. Yet, I'm willing to do whatever it takes to have a healthy baby and if that means a repeat then so be it. At least you have some time to think about what will work for you best.

  • @breesy14 Yes, at least there is some time!  I'm sure DH and I will be having several conversations with my OB in the next few months!
