December 2016 Moms

Richmond, Va mommies

We just found out that my husband received a new job that he applied/interviewed for months ago. We will now be relocating to the Richmond area when I am 28 weeks (terrifying)! Any recommendations on Drs and pediatricians? I also have a son that turned one last week. Also, what areas do you recommend for living? He was told to look in the Glen Allen area but we really no nothing about the area. Thanks! :)

  • In case you don't get much of a response here:

There are local boards on the Bump, though I think most of them are pretty dead. You're probably better off looking on Facebook for a local moms group. Even a clothing swap group in your area would be a good place to possibly hunt down referrals. Good luck!

  • Thanks! I'll definitely give it a shot!
  • We live in Northern VA, so I'm not in a place to give pedi recommendations for the local area, but Glen Allen is beautiful and a great place to raise kids-- we've visited many times.  I have a ton of friends who live in that area with kids and they love it.  Good luck!

  • I don't live near Virginia, so I have no direct advice.  However, the city I live in does have several moms/parents forums specific to the city and the surrounding areas.  Try googling "Richmond Mom's forum" or something along those lines and see if you can find one.  The one in my city is pretty active, so if there is one you might have some luck there.  The local forums on The Bump and What to Expect are pretty dead for where I live.

I live in Central VA, about 1.5 hrs from Richmond. I'm not sure on docs/ pediatricians. But my younger sister lives in Glen Allen, and she loves it. My dad lives in Chesterfield, and that's a nice area too. Good luck on finding a new place!

  • I lived in Richmond for 10 years before moving to the northern VA area a year and a half ago. Richmond is a great city to raise a family and the area to live really depends on what you're looking for. We lived in the Far West End. This is different than what's considered the West End. We had all of the amenities you could think of within a 10 minute drive; grocery stores, Costco, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, children's museum, a nice mall and many restaurants as well as a great school system. If you want more of a city feel, I recommend the near West End. This is closer to the city, has more quaint neighborhoods with older homes and you're still fairly close to amenities. South Side is nice depending on where you're at and more affordable. Glen Allen is nice too with great amenities, closer to the Far West End and affordable. I think the school system is rated high too. Although the city of Richmond is amazing, it's expensive if you want a nice home in a good neighborhood and the school system is unfavorable. I delivered my first son at St. Mary's hospital. Great experience. They are part of the Bon Secours healthcare system so we chose a Bon Secours pediatrician whose office was near our house. We also chose a La Petite daycare facility when I had to go back to work. Loved it. I hope you and your family have a good move and take advantage of everything Richmond has to offer. Take care during the move.
