1 year old not crawling. Can stand on her own for few seconds. Doctor says we can worry at 15 months

LO is 1 year old and we have tried everything to teach her to crawl but she is not interested. She pulls herself up to stand sometimes and stands for a few seconds. She loves to stand while being assisted. Her Pediatrician said not to worry that some babies don't crawl and that we can worry when she is 15 months and not walking. She has silent reflux and on nexiam so i  am thinking that is what might be delaying her.

  • I'm thinking she will skip crawling all together!!

  • Wow, it ate a lot of what I wrote out, I was saying: easy for me to say but try to remember every child is different. That's what I keep saying because my LO is having a horrible time eating. The worrying is awful.
  • A little girl that I used to babysit didn't crawl at all! She went right to pulling herself up and walking! Try not to worry.

The girl I babysit did the same! If your doctor isn't worried take deep breaths momma, you'll get there
  • Dont worry. DD didnt crawl & started walking on her 1st bday. Ive heard it can take up to 18 months for some. Dont stress over crawling. Ita not considered a milestone.
  • My daughter didn't crawl unt 9.5 months and I was so worried. So I get it.

Contact Early Intervention. It's a FREE state offered evaluation service for anything developmental ages birth to three years.

I had my daughter evaluated through that service (for something else) and it eased my worries.

  • My DS is 10 months and just started crawling (like this weekend). He has been pulling up to a stand on his own for a few weeks + trying to take steps on his own for several weeks.
He also never really rolled over. Just seems to be going straight to walking!
I'd second the Early Intervention though. It's free and never hurts to get an expert opinion!
  • I have a friend who's daughter didn't walk until 18 months - and she barely crawled before that. They finally decided to take her to a physical therapy appointment and began to officially worry, especially when the therapist gave more words of concern than support. The very next day, she walked!! She is now four and has absolutely no other delays and is 200% fully mobile! Sometimes babies just take a little longer. No matter what your journey will be, it will all work out :)
  • Thank you ladies. I keep telling myself that it will happen soon. I will wait until mid Nov like Doctor advised if she isn't walking then maybe he will advise on what to do. Being a parent is hard work...very rewarding but very hard.
  • My 4th skipped crawling.  He ended up "scooting" on his butt (looked like a tiny gorilla) and going straight to pulling up and cruising.

Do your best not to stress.  Keep an eye on it but know that she's probably just fine.

I will definitely keep an eye and try stress less.
  • My daughter was not crawling at 10 months--she wasn't even pulling up. When I spoke to the pediatrician she said although it's better to learn to crawl (something about right and left brain communication and coordination), it's not uncommon and of no concern if they don't learn.

She said she only worries if there are delays across the board. But if your baby eats well, is verbal, uses hands well, etc. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about!

  • To the original poster, these types of posts always concern me. Well meaning responders urge "don't worry!" and everyone shares their experience of their child who was "just fine".

Your plan to stay on top of it is a good one. Please don't be dissuaded from seeking the evaluation and support your child (may) need(s). Early intervention IS the best approach.
  • I have to chime in on early intervention. They are awesome. My little man was born with low muscle tone so they've been coming since he was a month old. I would definitely call them, it's free and they do great evaluations. I've worried a lot less because of it. The girl that comes every week is a PT and while we had some concerns she has eased them all.

  • My 9 month old isn't crawling. Not on all fours anyway, but like a caterpillar! It's quite funny. He pulls himself up all the time, can stand alone for a few seconds. I am not worried. He skips a few steps, that's fine I am sure. He never rolled into his belly on time, he hated tummy time and preferred sitting up.
