10 month old stores food in his mouth or spits it out

My LO just turned 10 months and I've been trying to increase the table foods and finger foods I give him. I've noticed, especially with meat and soft cooked vegetables, he stores the food in his mouth and either just lets it hang out in there or spits it out. He swallows purees and soft spoonfed foods fine. I'm not sure what to do about this. Anyone have suggestions?

Re: 10 month old stores food in his mouth or spits it out

  • Just recently we've noticed when baby starts to get full, he'll suck on the pieces (especially if it's meat) so that he gets the flavor and then he spits it out. We let him keep doing it until it's all gone because we want him to get used to the flavor, continue to learn how to eat, and sometimes he decides to actually swallow. He also does a little bit of the squirrel thing with pocketing pieces in his cheeks. We make extra sure that before we take him out of his seat he's either swallowed or spit out everything. We also find that he sometimes just keeps grabbing and grabbing without fully chewing or swallowing so we've learned to just put a little on his plate a time so that he gets used to pacing himself. It has helped reduce his tendency to store food in his mouth.

I might be wrong, but I'm of the opinion that right now it's still all about learning and exploration. That's why I'm okay with him spitting it out - he's still figuring out how his mouth works, what food tastes like, and when he should listen to his little tummy and stop eating. If he doesn't get as many solids as I'd like, I just amp up on the nursing time (although this has been a little different lately as he was recently sick with a tummy bug and that's impacted his eating habits a lot the past couple weeks).

  • My daughter spits her purees out ALL the time. It is so frustrating. So I know that's not much help, but you aren't alone!
  • My LO is now 11 months old and he used to do this with meat all the time.. almost like gum it down to a flat thing and store it in his cheeks. This was mostly with meat and I read somewhere (no idea) that it could be because its too tough and they don't really know how to use their teeth yet. So I ended up pureeing the meats.  He has molars already and still would do this. Just recently he has started to actually chew and swallow the meats - giving a sippy cup with water helped him get them down and out of his cheeks also :)
  • My daughter definitely chipmunks things. Usually because she is eating too fast. Just try and give him a couple things at some time so he doesn't get over excited amd stuff his mouth. St least it helps with my lo
