12 week blood test "finger prick"... next steps??!!!

Hi Ladies,

I'm about 13 weeks into this pregnancy journey (2nd time around) and this time I had a blood test done at my 12 week appointment that just required a prick of blood from my finger that i had to stamp on a sheet of paper. Anyway, the genetic counselor called to day to say that the risk for down syndrome was at 1/185 (I guess they like to see the number above 350). I'm 33... and now wondering what to do from here?? Has anyone followed up with other blood tests and gotten different results? Has anyone had this happen and have a false positive (she also said that can be a factor.) It's just very nerve-racking and kinda caught me off guard on the STEAMY HOT Monday afternoon.

Do you want to know for preparedness, or is it a decision of keeping or terminating the pregnancy?
Eta: after reading the other responses, I think I may be misunderstanding the question. Feel free to ignore.

  • @MamaAli0722 1/185 puts your risk relatively high, but these tests have up to a 25% chance of being incorrect, especially without a corresponding ultrasound (which brings accuracy up to between 83 and 92%).  Ideal results for this blood test come up at <1/10,000.  Since your risk is considered elevated, you're going to need further testing.  You're definitely going to want to follow up with a MFM.  Further blood testing will probably be done, with the possibility of a CVS or amniocentesis, depending on the results.

I'm sure there's a lot going through your head right now, but you need advice from a specialist, and not from the internet.  Try not to get too worried, as the blood test is only preliminary and is only assessing your risk.  It's in no way diagnostic at this point.
  • I had the NT scan in addition to the blood test, and the combination is much more comprehensive. If that's an option for you, I highly recommend it. In the meantime, listen to PP and stay off the internet. Google and us knuckleheads here aren't more reliable than your doctor, and you'll just end up scaring yourself.

  • I'm 33 also and had the panorma done. you get the results very quickly.
  • I have a 22 year old friend whose test came back with a 1 in 3 chance of her baby having Down's Syndrome. Further testing, showed that was a false positive.

  • Thanks guys for offering up initial thoughts and comments. I guess I just feel like other than calling my Dr. office (which I did and scheduled another round of blood tests that are more comprehensive) This felt like the only safe place I  had to put my nervous thoughts.

  • I don't have any personal experience with this, just wanted to say hang in there and try not to worry! Hopefully the ultrasound portion/further blood work gives you the all clear.
