Re: Stupid Question Sunday 8/14

  • This isn't pregnancy related, I hope it's still ok to ask.

I was on the July '14 BMB but didn't stay very active was DS was born. I keep seeing people refer the mass exodus of 2015. What happened?  Why did everyone leave?

  • Is there an appointment question board or something? I have my first appointment next week and am just curious on what to expect/type of sono.  My mom wants to come with me(DH can't get off work :\)  but if it's an internal sono that might be a little too awkward for me to handle lol.

  • @Taylor72, I think it really depends on your doctor's office. We don't have ultrasounds this early here (not until 20 weeks unless there are complications). I think this early if you have an ultrasound, it will be internal. To give you some comfort (again this might be dependent on your doctor), my DH wasn't allowed in the room for the ultrasound. He came in after it was completed and they reviewed photos, video, heartbeat, etc. Even if this isn't standard practice where you are, you might be able to request it. We aren't allowed anyone in the room with us during the procedure though, only afterwards. And that's standard in every hospital across our city.
  • @STM2017 thank you for the info! I was figuring on internal but just wasn't sure.  20 weeks is a long time to wait for an US...hopefully that time flies for you!

@buzzellsl  I am curious about this, too. I was only semi-active then and remember some arguments on the Parenting board, following which a lot of people left, but I think there may have been some wider drama with Bump staff leaving, too. Anyone want to post a link or share the story?

@blackasnight told me this last week "there was a bunch of crap going on behind the scenes on the admin side. One of the long time admins who was beloved by this community who volunteered her time to monitor the boards was banned for no real reason other than she didn't agree with some new rules the company wanted to put in place. This caused a mass exodus as everyone was really upset that she would be treated this way. The new paid company admins started banning people left and right. The company admins would delete threads or comments without warning. It was a PR nightmare for them.

In my June BMB we had a candle loss thread every week to show our support to those that suffered miscarriages. The new Bump admins deleted it. We were outraged. "

  • I know it's Monday but I have a stupid question and this thread seemed like the best fit.

My soon to be SIL just sent over the menu for her early September wedding to make sure I didn't have any dietary restrictions on it, and the dessert is a pistachio cake with Kahlua ganache (which frankly sounds amazing).  Am I right in assuming the little bit of alcohol in the ganache will be fine to eat?  We haven't told them about the pregnancy yet, and I wouldn't say anything about giving me a different dessert or make a fuss over it, I was just curious as to what the common consensus is on consuming small amounts of alcohol.
  • @housewifehobbyist I agree, it's what you are comfortable with. I think you will be fine. And it sounds AMAZING.

It's no longer Sunday but I'm sure it's always a good  time for a stupid question :P

So green tea is fine during pregnancy right? how much is too much though? currently that seems to be the only thing helping a bit with my nausea....

  • Thank you @mamabear2015 and @Stephout!  That's the direction I was leaning, but then I was second guessing if I was being too lax.
  • @housewifehobbyist I wouldn't even think twice about it. I fully intend to have a beer or glass of wine every once in a while in my second and third tri and would have up to half a beer or glass of wine now.

  • @MrsBakes I think the main issue with green tea would be the caffeine, which you're supposed to keep under 200 milligrams a say, depending on the strength you brew that's about 3-4 cups a day.  Have you tried peppermint tea?  That's been a huge help for me.

Hm well there is another stupid that comes to surface. I was already unsure about whether green tea has caffeine or not. So I looked at the packaging as every tea I look at either says "contains caffeine" or "caffeine free". But green tea here at work is the only tea that doesn't specify either. So I assumed it's caffeine free because 3 women at work "confirmed" that green tea is caffeine free. Well Ops, I just had two big cups! And I'm not supposed to have hardly any caffeine because I have arrhythmia.

I win the stupid of the day! LOL

I love peppermint tea, so I'll be switching to that!

    Thanks!

I have also been wondering what happened.  Weird that they would respond that way, but leave that controversial Baby Names thread pinned and active!  I don't get it, but at least I have some background on what happened now.  Thank you.

  • @cateanchor07 thanks for your response!  That's crazy!  I can't believe they would delete a candle loss thread.  So insensitive!

  • I left with my board in the Exodus after TB also had some major privacy glitches.  Started displaying my real first and last name instead of my alias.  I was so upset.
  • @gardenmama17 I love your hydrangea pic!  I have one too, but moved it last fall to a new spot and this year it bloomed purple shortly after the replanting last year and then pink this spring.  I'll have to keep working on the soil to get the ph right so it turns blue again!

  • Hey, I dug up this thread because I have a question. This time around I was temping/charting so I know the day that I ovulated. I believe I will still be getting an early ultrasound at 9 or 10 weeks. I will be with a new group of midwives. If I tell them that I know the day I ovulated do they believe you? I mean, the ultrasound should line up with that date, right? What if it doesn't? I really don't want to change my EDD, since I know what day I ovulated. I guess I am just wondering what other's experience is? Thanks!

  • @mrsstuessy My OB did not really care when i told them I o'ed late.I got a positive test last week and my LMP was 7/3, so they though I was like 6 wks and change instead of barely 4 (which I knew from temping). So when they got my first betas, they were doom and gloom about them. And I was like,  listen. I ovulated on day 27.
The same thing happened with my first pregnancy. They did an US and thought they baby was measuring behind, but it was on track with my charting. For me, it was talking to a wall (hoping the new practice I'm switching to will listen a little more). But my perception of midwives is that they'd be put more stock in temping.
  • @mrsstuessy
I fudged my LMP by a day so that EDD would be right based off my ovulation day.  If you're close I'd say that's probably a noharm/nofoul sort of thing.

  • @mrsstuessy I'm sure you know it depends on the particular midwife you're seeing, but FWIW my doctor takes both LMP and my charted ovulation date into account.  I was actually measuring a day small and when I told him my O date he was just like "Ok, well that's likely it then".
  • I didn't bother to tell my doctor when I ovulated, but at the same time I didn't listen to her EDD. At my US today the baby's size was within 1 day of my o-date (which was CD 18). I didn't get an adjusted EDD from the doctor though.

  • Thanks for the input everyone. I am hoping that since I am going with midwives this time they will put more stock into my charting. I don't know, I've never had a midwife. This is my first cycle after a CP, so the first day of my LMP was actually the day I started my miscarriage. I would hope that would mean they won't trust the typical 28 day cycle as much. I O'ed on CD 21 this time around, which is pretty much my normal, usually CD 20. That puts me at 6 days behind the normal 28 day cycle guess. I was tempted to fudge the LMP days a little bit. But, I guess I am going to stick with the truth and see what happens. I just don't want this to effect something like an induction at the end of the road. It doesn't mean much now, if they are 6 days off. But, at the end of things each day means a lot more. I guess we will just have to wait and see at my first appointment which won't be until mid September.

  • @mrsstuessy 6 days is a lot in early pregnancy, I imagine if they give you an ultrasound they'll adjust the dates themselves when the scan comes up six days "behind".
  • Honestly, now. What is the verdict on camomile tea? It is in sleepy time tea, which I'm dying to try.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply :) I enjoyed some sleepy time tea last night after considering this and googling like a madwoman. I passed right out and had an amazing sleep <3

I'm not usually a tea person unless its iced tea from
Teavana that I get roped into buying because I like to go in there for free samples.  Anyway, my morning coffee has been making me hurl but I still crave that hot liquid feeling in the morning.  Any recommendations on teas that are easy on the stomach?  Bonus points if it helps with nausea.

    @MrsBakes
I actually remember reading something with my last pregnancy that said green tea slows or reduces the absorption of folic acid (which is in your prenatals and VERY important for baby's brain development), so I stopped drinking it.  I'd look at that more, but I'd imagine the occasional green tea as long as you get extra folic acid wouldn't be a problem.
  • @clover28
For any tea, I recommend adding a drop of honey to it after it's cooled down a bit if you're not used to drinking tea.  It is surprisingly effective at cutting the bitterness of tea without over sweetening it like standard sugar.  Plus honey has other health benefits (although these are reduced once the honey is heated, but if you're using a store bought honey it's already been pasteurized).

For anti-nausea, the best teas that I'm aware of are ginger or peppermint.

Yogi teas has a Stomach Ease Tea that is a peppermint leaf blend with a hint of ginger, black pepper, cardamom, and coriander (all of which have their own GI beneficial properties).  I've not tried that particular blend, but I'm a huge fan of the brand Yogi.  Word of warning - being that it's peppermint leaf and is instead peppermint extract, it may not taste as you expect.

    @hilaryfrances315
The study I've found regarding green tea and folic acid only measured when the folic acid was consumed at the same time as the green tea.  While it's worth keeping in mind, the effect shown by the study may possibly be because of an interaction between the two items.  For instance, eating a banana and then drinking sprite causes a chemical reaction that would not occur if there was time and/or food between them.

@dannylion24 Neikoda decided to stop participating in the BMB. She said "Due to the continued conflict of organization on this board, and so many other women claiming their BMBs were so much better with no organization, do as you wish on this board. I will no longer be contributing nor encouraging organization of any kind.

For those of you who enjoyed and encouraged the organization, I apologize that the outcome will be more chaotic than anticipated. For those of you who embrace the increased entropy of the discussion, enjoy your BMB.

The best of luck to all of you in your pregnancies."

She removed the spreadsheet link, but I was able to make a copy of it before it was deleted. Then someone went in to my copy and deleted all of the data. Because Google Docs is *the best* I was able to restore the information and have now restricted editing on the spreadsheet until things die down. At least one other poster says she is leaving as well.

Neikoda also deleted the information in the board organization thread, but if we want that back we can just pull it from another BMB.

  • @clover28 I have been drinking mama's morning tea. It's helped ease nausea in the AM. Ginger, peppermint, and a few other tummy settling ingredients. It isn't much for taste, but the smell is calming for the tummy.
