TTC After a Loss

Question about betas

*tw*

Hi Ladies. So I went in for my beta today after getting increasingly darker BFPs since Saturday. I'm sorry if this isn't the correct place to ask this, but I thought you all might know. This is the first time I've gotten had the beta blooddraw (with my CP in June, it happened so quickly we didn't have time). My doctor had told me then that it may be a case that my progesterone was low then and with coming in as soon as possible after a new BFP,  we could figure that out early on to potentially prevent another MC. I asked the technician about that today, and she said the betas only looked at HCG levels and there was no need to do other tests at this point. She said that since I was pregnant my body was producing progesterone and I didn't need to worry. I explained what the doctor had said, and she said the doctor only ordered the beta at this point, and she would call tomorrow. Does this sound right to you all, or should I have expected to have them check the other hormones today too?  Thanks for any help you may have.

Re: Question about betas

  • I haven't personally had a beta done but if you feel uncomfortable with just having the HCG tested I would ask for the doctor to reach out to you directly. Maybe the nurse is not fully aware of your situation, I found at my OB that the nurses were not aware of most things...one thought I took Cytotec for abortion purposed not a MMC! I would tell them to have the doctor call you directly.

  • @lilylover27 thank you. I tried to talk with her while I was there today but she wasn't available. I'm going to call first thing in the morning. I explained my situation to the nurse but she was adament. Hopefully the doctor can explain tomorrow. It is hard when we want to trust our doctors/nurses but are already nervous! It makes it tough.

  • Its likely nurse can't change or add to order and because doctor only ordered the HCG that is all she did. But I'm guessing you'll have another HCG on Wed or Thurs? Try to push doc to test progesterone then?

  • There are a lot of theories that go along with low progesterone in pregnancy. My doctor has suggested that more often than not, low progesterone is a sign of poor egg quality/ovulation or an unviable pregnancy as opposed to a low progesterone issue in and of itself. If you want something though, you are always entitled to ask. Like PP said, you should likely have another beta in a couple days and they might be able to do progesterone then if you request ahead of time.
  • They always check a progesterone with my first few sets of betas. I am a tad unique though and since my registry office knows about my PCOS she wanted to check levels from the minute of a positive test, so even before any MC I have always known routine as tracking beta and progesterone to confirm. I know most people never have labs drawn

if you are at all concerned, ask for one

  • @BornReady - my doc thinks the same thing... she might humor me this time and test my progesterone but she doesn't think supplementing will sustain a pregnancy

  • Thank you all for the tips and info. I called today, and the doctor hadn't gotten my results back. They called the lab, and the lab has no record of my sample. They draw the blood in office and the lab picks it up. The lab tech who took the sample yesterday was gone already so they said come back in the morning and they will do another draw and hopefully figure out what happened. I am so upset but trying to stay calm and positive.

  • Just a word of caution - the OB-gyn who was on call when I had a good U/S after very bad betas and low progesterone offered me Crinone and I used it for the rest of my 1st trimester. It turns out I likely sustained a failing pregnancy for 7 weeks with the supplements. There are women with legitimate LPD with very short luteal phases who benefit from progesterone suppositories, but if your progesterone is low, it may be because the egg was never good to begin with.  I like to give this warning because no one told me this was a possibility until after the fact.My Triploidy baby's heart stopped the week after I stopped suppositories.

@natsfans84 so sorry for the screwup. So annoying!! It's great you are staying positive.
