Introducing solids!! EBF

Anyone to this step with baby yet? Any good suggestions?. I EBF and have been given the go ahead to introduce solids.  He is super interested when we eat, but not so interested when it comes time to try and give him some Mashed bananas. I even mixed it with breast milk

Re: Introducing solids!! EBF

  • We did bananas (just a small taste through the mesh feeder), and it made him so constipated I had to actually pull the poop out of his booty.

Two weeks later, sweet potato. That went better as far as poop at first, just a few spoonfuls of organic sweet potato baby food at dinner time for a few days. However, by day 3 we ended up with black poop (indicating digested blood somewhere in the GI tract) and are awaiting a bunch of test results from our doc.

So, we are back on formula only for a long while, as we figure out what's going on. Early foods are not for us, apparently.

  • We've tried a few. He likes melons... Cried with bananas. Applesauce wasn't fun either. Bread was ok. Bell pepper was fun to gnaw on. He's just tasting stuff right now so he's only getting a teaspoon or so a day. We're following the "just fun until one" mantra.
  • Oh he also liked sauerkraut, forgot about that lol
  • Everyone and their mom is pushing me to give T solids/cereal because he still wake up multiple times per night. I remind them that cereal and solids don't help with sleeping, but the "advice" keeps coming. He is EBF at home and is up to 4-5 ounce bottles of breast milk every 3 hours at daycare. He's always been a hungry dude. We have our 4 month check up on Wednesday so we will see what the dr says. We started DD on stewed and mashed pears when she was 4 months. They are really easy to digest. I definitely don't feel as rushed to introduce solids with this baby as I did with DD.
  • LO isn't satisfied with just formula anymore. He's getting like 7 or 8oz at every feeding and it's just not enough for him. So we've started giving him one meal that's a solid. And then usually with a half a bottle of formula to finish him up. It seems to be going ok. But then again we just started this yesterday.
  • What we had to do was give him the half a bottle first and then the food after he finished the bottle. Today he finished the food and then got the bottle and was a happy camper afterwards.
  • My baby just makes a horrible face and acts like he's gagging every time we feed him. I'm mashing bananas so I know he's not actually choking.
  • @Cwyatt2571 you may need to try a different food. Like mashed sweet potatoes. Or you may just need to wait. We in all fairness had been giving LO tastes of foods for about two or three weeks. Depending on what we were eating and if it had a sauce to it.
  • It could just be a texture thing to. LO hates the texture of mashed potatoes but loves the taste of
  • We started "solids" yesterday after getting the go ahead from the pediatrician. We have just done Gerber oatmeal mixed with breastmilk so far, and DS loves it! There are some funny faces, but he always wants more and will lean toward the spoon and open his mouth. He's doing a good job of pushing it to the back of his mouth and swallowing, as well. We are just doing a tablespoon or so at a time, twice a day (about an hour after breakfast and lunchtime bottles).

We plan to start on avocado sometime next week.

He'd been very interested in our food and watching us eat for several weeks now, so I think he's delighted that he finally gets to join in!
  • OP, did he try it and spit it out or not want the spoon in his mouth? He may still have a tongue reflex and not be ready. Waiting a week and trying again would be an option. You can certainly try a different food. All of my kids loved sweet potatoes, like pps have suggested. My kids also liked their purees thick, not runny. That might be an issue for him if you mixed it with bm.

haha, really? I wouldn't imagine a baby would like kraut. Now I want to try and give it to DD!

Thank you for saying this! Lola is still getting up multiple times per night as well. If I hear one more time, "to just give her cereal or start solids" I honestly might scream! Lol nice to know I'm not alone is this.

You're definitely not alone. DD wakes to eat twice during the night, but will also wake randomly between feedings sometimes 2-4 times. She's just being a baby as far as I'm concerned

I've been told this so many times too. My son still gets up sometimes 6 times a night. So I did start giving him solids at about 3.5 months and it made him so gassy that it made sleep even worse. So I stopped. Seriously it's better to just wait.

This is why my pediatrician told me to start him on solids!!!! I feel like he's still a little young. He wakes up twice a night also. Think I'll go ahead and weight a couple months. So glad I posted this!

We're doing the same thing as @JayeSkylar...LO gets about 4 oz of formula then some food and then sometimes he'll finish the rest of the bottle (another 2 - 4 oz). He's a big time eater for sure.

So far, we've only tried mashed bananas 3 times. The first time (last Thursday), he screamed his head off; ate one spoonful. The second time, he lunged at the spoon and chowed down. The third try (Sunday), DH fed him and I think he was feeding him too fast because LO started pushing the spoon away/no longer interested. It's been hit and miss, I guess.

No allergic reactions thus far, so he's cleared to eat bananas. We will be experimenting with pears over the weekend.

Also, LO is an awesome sleeper (8-8:30 pm until 6am) with no MOTN feeds.

ETA: LO is 19 weeks tomorrow.

I'm glad others are still burning the midnight feeding oil. I work full time but it doesn't really bother me to motn feed. If it ain't broke...

eta- maybe I'd feel different if T's weight gain wasn't so great, but if he's healthy and growing, why change.
  • There apparently is no conclusive evidence that says starting solid will help babies sleep better... Unfortunately....
So for you ladies who have tried solids and "baby hated it"... Just remember they have absolutely no idea it's even food! Or that food is what takes away hunger. I would highly recommend all mom's check out "Baby led weaning" from the library if you haven't already
  • I feel my son is not ready yet. He will just stare when we eat, thats it. Nothing dramatic. And @korpatch, you are right. Solids does not determine full night sleeps. My son will mostly sleep five hours at a stretch and then the sleep starts to diminish till morning. But sometimes he will wake around four to five times, and sometimes just once. And he is ebf. My doctor told me not to give anything till six months and he was quite stern. I may give him a lil water after he is 22 weeks. He is 19 right now. They just wake up randomly due to unknown reasons. Just do what you all think is best for the baby. Follow your own intution. As many opinions as many people.
  • We had our four month yesterday and my doctor say "you don't plan to start any solids till after six months, right?" We had never talked about it before. It's just the way she likes to word things so it makes the parents think everything is their idea, not hers.
  • At our 4 month checkup the other day our Dr said she did not recommend starting solids until 6 months. Of course, she let us choose what we wanted to do, but told us about some of the studies done about infant cereal.  A lot of them contain arsenic. The levels aren't toxic, but she said any arsenic in a baby's diet is too much.
She suggested when we revisit the "solid food talk" (at 6 months) we start with soft/mashed fruits, vegetables, avocado, etc, right off the bat instead of starting with cereal.
To each his own....this is just what we were told.

  • I know we started with a few things, but I'm going to go ahead and wait for a little while longer. He's only going to be little for so long ya know?
