anyone gluten free or paleo?

Wondering how you're eating. I've been paleo for over 5 years now and never thought it was difficult until I hit week 6 (now on week 15). I've been eating alot more gluten free bread and fruit which I really hate doing so looking for other ideas.

Re: anyone gluten free or paleo?

  • I'm gluten free - my whole family's been gluten free (for celiac disease) for ~ 14 years now. I don't know that I can be terribly helpful though. My husband's low carb GF, but I'm moderate to high carb.

What kind of ideas are you looking for?

  • I try to be mostly paleo, especially at home.  But, through this whole first trimester, I can't tell you how many sandwiches I've consumed.  The guy at my favorite lunch place didn't even ask me my name last time he took my soup & sandwich order.  My daily salad bar option has sounded so gross lately and a tomato basil ravioli soup w/ half a veggie sandwich has been my saving grace repeatedly.

I'm hoping to get back to cleaner eating now that I'm feeling a little better (more energy, less nausea).  Also, September through November is the time when I usually struggle with Vertigo.  That's the main reason I switched to eating paleo in the first place; cutting everything out really helped clear up my symptoms.

I am already accepting that I'm going to have to be a bit more lenient on the carbs and dairy though.  I'm planning on beefing up some meals with sweet potatoes and grains/legumes (corn and chickpeas kind of stuff).  Also, I've added cottage cheese and yogurt as snacks because I was concerned about calcium.

But, I know that getting the gluten out of my diet is going to be the key for going into the fall.  When I re-introduced each thing after my first Whole 30, that is what really caused me some issues.  Now that I'm trying to avoid my allergy medicine and doubt that my anti-vertigo prescription is ok, that's my biggest goal.

Are you gluten free by choice or is it due to an allergy/reaction?

  • I have PCOS and hypothyroidism and do much better both gluten and dairy free. I've done multiple whole 30s and work closely with a naturopathic doctor specializing in hormones. Pre-pregnancy I used to occasionally eat dairy but I'm found I'm so stuffy since becoming pregnant I've had to completely eliminate dairy. I haven't and do not plan on eating gluten but would like to get back to more basic paleo of protein and veggies at each meal.
  • One of my favorite sources for ideas is Mel Joulwan and her Well Fed books.  Her 'hot plates' method of cooking changed my life in general.  Additionally, she posts 5 dinner recipes each week on her blog.  A lot of them are simple and rely on a lot of standard paleo pantry items and seasonal produce.  https://meljoulwan.com/

I also do a ton of hashes.  We get a CSA farm delivery each week; so, that dictates the veggie portion.  If we get zucchini and corn, that's what I make all week.  Then I just buy a lot of random proteins from the store, whatever's on sale or looks good, and pair that however it makes sense.

Finally, I've recently fell back in love with chia pudding.  Having one serving a day seems to help with my fun, new digestive issues.

  • My typical lunch/dinner: onion, green pepper & squash w/ Aidell's andouille sausage.  No recipe, just trying to clean out the fridge before our next crate of veggies arrives.

  • @MLRocha great ideas! I've hated cooking the last few weeks but I finally think I'm coming out of it. I have both Well Fed cookbooks and love Melissa's recipes. We also belong to a CSA however my husband has been eating most of it :( I bough a bunch of ingredients for salads (i like raw veggies more than cooked since pregnant) this week and just prepped some of against all grain's chicken tenders so fingers crossed this week is more normal for me.

I tried chia pudding earlier in my pregnancy for breakfast. Thanks for the reminder! Unfortunately I still hate eggs so breakfasts are really challenging.
  • I am and I'm really struggling.  I'm having so many food aversions that it's hard for me to eat anything most days.  I've relied a lot on smoothies and juicing.  Eggs are hit and miss.  I have had more gluten free bread in the first tri than I have in the last 3 years and it makes me feel like crap.  Thankfully this baby craves salad, it's the meat I have the most trouble with.

  • @thehappyphotog I can totally relate. I hate relying on guten free junk food and feel like crap when I eat it. Luckily I've been feeling a little better the last few days and I'm determined to try and have more veggies and protein this week. Meat is also my biggest issue. Red meat is off the list but I seem to be ok with chicken and most fish. I've been eating tons of salmon.
