First Seven

I'm gonna go a little topic rogue here! Thought this might be a fun way for us to get to know each other in a different light, as women with some history before we become mamas (or add to our broods).  This has been going around on FB and it has made me laugh. It seems these days I need these little distractions because ummmm have y'all taken a look at your to-do lists lately? Color me overwhelmed.

First Seven Jobs. Here are mine:

1. Overpriced jeans pusher
2. Teenage fashion guru failure
3. Office supply calculator
4. Copy machine
5. Piss-on
6. Glorified paper pusher
7. Slightly less pissed-on

Whew. Thank goodness for my job now!

...only my current job pays more than #4 - I worked there before they had credit card machines (uh... am I old?) and the place was new to my area so people would tip outrageous amounts. I would routinely take home $25-30/hour in cash on top of getting a paycheck...

ETA - I made minimum wage for 5 of these... which was $5.15/hour for my location back in my day (shit. I'm old).

    5. Food prep for a country club (worst job ever!)

    6. Ropes course coordinator at a summer adventure camp (best job ever!)

  • I have had a lot of jobs to help put me through college. And I kept switching because I loathed most of them with a fiery passion:

    1. Limited Too Retail Associate
    2. Kaufmann's Retail Associate/Stock Person
    3. Circuit City Stock Person
    4. Dunkin' Donuts Baker and Cashier
    5. McDonald's Cashier
    6. Kinney Pharmacy Clerk
    7. Licensed Veterinary Technician

They were all horrid except being a pharmacy clerk at Kinney and being a LVT, which is what I ended up going back to school for (I got a bachelor's degree in 2008 in music and psychology, which I have never regretted, but--surprise, surprise--did not get me a job :P). In the interim (between degrees), I worked at Dunkin' Donuts. While attending school again, I worked at McDonald's and Kinney Pharmacy to help pay my bills. I graduated with my A.A.S. in Veterinary Science Technology in 2012 and have not looked back! Doesn't pay well but it's the only job I have ever been happy doing, so that means a lot to me! :)

Working during college sucked ass because I was so busy with collegiate sports and taking 7 classes at a time. The worst was at OUAC. The owner didn't care about anyone but herself. Story:

I had to work one summer afternoon, and the manager for that shift called me unexpectedly in the morning. She was whispering and said she fell and couldn't get up. I raced over to her apartment, and her 2 children were screaming and crying. She was on the floor in the bathroom, and half of her body was a strange color and very, very cold. I called an ambulance because I thought she had a stroke--then called the owner to say what happened and that I'm going to stay with the manager at the hospital, as she had no family in the state. Ambulance comes and gets her, and the hospital checks her out. Fortunately it wasn't a stroke, but a severely spasmed back and pinched nerves. I take her to get her prescriptions and then get home around 1am.

The next day when I went into work, the owner pulled me into her office and said how DARE I stay with the manager in the hospital, I put her in a position where she had to come in herself, her business comes first, etc etc. I said that I felt I did the right thing because neither of us were sure what happened...then the bomb came. She said she talked with the manager, and that the manager said I "refused to go into work" even though she repeatedly "urged me to go in, that she was fine." I was incredibly, deeply hurt and angry--I wanted to do the right thing and she threw me under the bus. I quit on the spot, and said that her shitty business will NEVER be more important than a person's life.

To this day I refuse to go into a Once Upon a Child.

leksiL, yes! I truly loved being a music major. Studying music during my childhood and then throughout college shaped who I am and gave me more than I can describe! I am fortunate like your friend to have been able to return for my vet tech degree as well! :) I will definitely make sure my little one has the opportunity to study an instrument/visual arts/literature/whatever too :) It's so important.

Up until the year I started teaching, I have always had at LEAST one waitressing job-and until I became a teacher I always made more at my part time waitressing job than I did as a full time  whatever. When I was the Stapler Target I worked three days a week at a craft beer bar, one of those days being Monday, and I made more than my 5 day a week full time job. Crazy.

    This was fun!

Worst of all was Petco. I was basically forced to quit because of the missed miscarriage I had, they said the 2 days I spent in the ER were unexcused even though I had a doctor's note for both days and I had called in way before my shift for both days. So basically those 2 days were unexcused and if I missed a third day I would be fired. For not being able to come in because I was in so much pain from the Cytotec that my OB gave me narcotics to knock me out. Looking back that was probably some form of pregnancy discrimination that I could have fought, but I honestly didn't know any better. I just left and then started working at the bank a couple of weeks later after I had physically healed up. The bank was a good job but not my favorite, I had a lot of friends at Walmart and would probably go back to work there while I'm still in school. I'm going to school to be a teacher, that's the job I'm most excited about!

  • @swhiddon33 I learned a hard lesson that day--you can try to do the right thing and be there for someone, but it doesn't mean they will do the same for you. The manager moved away (I confronted her then never talked to her again), but I'm unfortunately still in the same place the owner is, so I never go into any of her shops that I typically enjoy, including Clothes Mentor and Plato's Closet. Anything I know she is associated with, I will not donate money to or buy from. Probably doesn't make a huge impact, but I refuse to support someone like that in any shape or form.

@silverfrost I forgot limited too was thing til now
I know, right? Actually,Kaufmann's and Circuit City are gone now too. Well, Kaufmann's turned into Macy's, I suppose. It's strange!

@ashleaf2018 What an awful thing for a corporation to do to their employee. Regardless of the reason you were out, it's not like you were sitting at home twiddling your thumbs. You were out for a medical procedure. Ugh. So frustrating. At least you got out of that shithole.

@dmontgo Can't believe the owner AND the manager treated you that way. You were helping somebody. Guess what? When employees can't make it into work, guess who has to take over? Upper management. The owner didn't like that, she shouldn't have taken that position owning a business. It drives me crazy when bosses complain about having to fill in when people are out for legitimate reasons. Like... then don't take that job, fool!

Well, I definitely haven't worked at 7 jobs yet. ;)

    1. Heritage Cafeteria for 14 years. Food server. Started at 16.

Then I moved to a new city after finishing school. My husband was already living there for work so I needed to take whatever  jobs I could get.  I worked two jobs at once.

    2. Microcenter as a Cashier
    3. Petco as the small animal manager

Moved back to the city I had moved from six months previously because my husband got a better job offer and we both wanted to be closer to family.  I was able to get my first "real" job. At least it is in my field. ;)

    4.  PC support for a call center. I've been here for a year next week.

    That's it! :)
