Baby activities

now that our little ones are getting to an age where they can do more then lay on their Playmats, what do you do to keep them occupied? Other than typical stuff like going for walks, playing on their mats, reading books. What kind of sensory games do you play? Or home made games? Or anything else creative that your little one finds entertaining

Mine loves going in the pool and hanging in his jumperoo.  We go to the local farmers market every weekend so he can take in all the sights and sounds.  He also like crumpling paper up and playing peekaboo.

We just got over colds here and DD has learned how to fake sneeze so people will say "bless you". She laughs hysterically and then "sneezes" again. That is her favorite activity right now. Other than that a lot of rolling, bouncing, kicking, peekaboo, stories, songs and toys.
That is hilarious that she fake sneezes and then laughs about it!
  • Curious about this too. I feel like I'm so boring doing the same thing over and over. I just bought her a baby pool. I know the summer is almost over, but hey at least it's not the usual lol

Lol, my babe figured out the fake cough from his cold! Does it alllll the time and whenever we look and say, oh goodness you ok? He starts giggling! So fun how they are already making jokes!
  • We've done story time at our local library and my little guy loves it! He gets in his exersaucer and walker a lot. He's recently started liking swinging in baby swings at parks. I also bought a bubble machine from Amazon and he loves trying to pop the bubbles as they go by. I'm interested to see what other people are doing also because we do the same thing everyday and I think he's getting bored with me!
  • Thats just it, we do the same things, play on the floor, exercauser, jolly jumper, read a book, we recently also got a kiddie pool. I was trying to look on pinterest for creative fun crafty ideas but not much for babies under a year. Or neat sensory games. Now that she's up longer between naps it's getting too repetitive
  • My little has learned to fake cough as well and thinks its hilarious when you cough back at him!! He also loves to follow our cats around. That keeps him pretty occupied!

  • Same as above for me... lots of walks (stroller and carrier, he likes to feel leaves and things), library story time, mom and baby groups, baby signing class, books, LOTS of singing (he'll have me singing Old MacDonald for a good couple hours, I now sing he had a zoo instead of a farm to amuse myself), time on the play mat, exersaucer... I often now give him ice cubes in his mesh feeder which cools him down and keeps him occupied for ages. He likes to hang out in the carrier or wrap while I do housework too so I just talk to him or sing while I do.

I've been trying to do sensory activities with him every now and then, such as painting (inside a zip loc) and sensory zip loc bags, but he really just wants to eat the plastic still. Yesterday he was extra clingy so I ended up putting him in the wrap and taking him around the kitchen smelling different foods and spices and whatnot!

Our LO is obsessed with the cats! He stares at them whenever he sees them (he's not mobile yet). I'm thinking he'd love a small zoo or a farm or petting zoo right now.

Not necessarily creative..but I split his toys into 3 buckets. I pull a different one out each day...seem to help some boredom at home. Also, since he is all about food I give him little snacks throughout the day. He really enjoys picking things up himself. He also loves sitting in boxes. Sometimes I pull him around in a box or laundry basket..
  • I started coloring with him, he's to little but he still has fun. We build block towers and wreck them. He loves following the dogs around the house. When I make dinner I put him next to me in his high chair and have him taste foods he can and smell foods with strong scents as I go. We have a pool close to our house with a kid pool so we go to that at least once a week. We bought flash cards, once again he's to little but he likes to look though the pictures and hold the cards. I just try to mix things but I feel boring to.
  • I wish we could colour. But she would eat the crayons.
  • We have a fake cougher, too!
Our girl is Miss Independent, so even though she's not crawling, she spends a good portion of time scooting herself around on the hardwood floors. She can travel! We wouldn't survive without our Exersaucer, and we also have an infant seat with activities as well. I bought a little bead toy (where the beads travel on rods), and she'll sit and play with that, too.
Since we're doing baby-led weaning, we know that she loves playing with things on her high-chair tray, so we just set her up sometimes with something edible so she can play. For this, she almost never even tries to eat it, but we give her edible things, just in case hands go into her mouth. So far, we've done tapioca pudding, scrambled eggs, and egg noodles.
Finally, I have noticed that she loves it when I have drawstrings on my clothes, as well as buttons and snaps. I'm planning on making a mat that will possibly strap onto her high chair tray with strings, zippers, nylon webbing (this kid is obsessed with straps,) velcro, etc. Hoping it will keep her busy when mama has to load the dishwasher or make a meal!

A waitress brought him a kid menu and crayons when we were out to eat so we tried and he loved it. I had to stop him from eating them at first now he doesn't even try. He hits the crayons on the paper and laughs when they color.  This is his latest art work =)
  • We go outside and look at all the flowers, trees etc and call out what each thing is. I'm trying to get LO to say consonants but she hasn't yet. There's also a baby swing in our development we visit once per day. She's really getting bored easy so I have to mix it up alot. She loves being outside. I also take her upstairs where there is carpet and she loves rolling around on it opposed to the tile/hardwood downstairs. I also turn on the sink for a few mins and let her grab the water and kick etc. I need to get a bathing suit so we can visit the pool more often cause she loves water.
  • Musical instruments are fun! Maracas, bells, drums, etc. We shake them to the beat of songs. And she puts them in her mouth. :) Ribbons and scarves are fun to wave around to music too.
  • I try to get him into the pool at least once a week. We do walks almost every night once it cools down a little bit.  During the day, he'll use his Nemo jumper and play in his pack and play downstairs. Upstairs, I have another jumper/activity center that I got from my shower, and he does like that.  It's in his room. Once he gets sick of that, I lay him on the foam tiles I have made into a larger mat and put a bunch of toys out.  We are really trying to get him crawling, so I will pull the toys to the edge of the mat and see if he'll go towards any of them.  Bubbles are an interest of his now too.

  • I don't do anything fancy...like ever, haha! But what I do with her is let her experience things with as many of her senses as possible. We sit in the yard and she pulls up grass, feels it, smells it and even tastes it (a little) no eating it though! We touch and smell leaves, flowers, vegetables, spices...and we have lots of fun with water in the pool and bath. Bubbles are the new fun thing. She loves seeing them and popping them!
She loves books that are sensory, touch and feel books.
We also listen to classical music on iTunes a lot and other music and we dance around the house.
I put her in the Tula and we go places and I point out everything and tell her what it is...and then momma gets an ice cream cone because well you know...I deserve it and stuff  :)
  • I haven't done it yet, but making a sensory board sounds kind of fun!  You could even do a much simpler version for now, since our LO's are still pretty young, just with different textured/colored fabric, papers, etc.

  • @maureenmce I love the sensory board idea! I'm definitely going to make one, my little would love it!
