Olympics Chatter. Week of 8/5

Its here y'all!!
Hop I don't get pounced on but I thought it deserved its own thread since it'll be going on for 2 weeks.
What are thinking about the opening ceremonies? What events are you looking forward to this week?

DD is having major sleep issues right now and I missed the American team coming in. Gah!!! And since they are in a wonky order I don't know how far back to rewind.

Re: Olympics Chatter. Week of 8/5

  • We had our traditional opening ceremony party. DH and I have been doing it since we have been together. I decorate the house with USA/Olympic location (Brazil) colors. And I cook a meal from wherever the Olympics are. Tonight I made an amazing coconut chicken rice meal. It was amazing and Brazilian lemonade. Seriously, look it up. It is amazing. We watch the ceremony and eat and celebrate. We had some family over this time and it was so much fun. DD was really enjoying the creative/pretty part of the ceremony.

  • I love the Olympics! I'm looking forward to gymnastics, swimming, and diving. Can't wait to see Simone Biles tear it up.

@Mama5181 the US came in during the Es. (Estados Unidos (or similar) in Portuguese.) Thank goodness because I couldn't stay awake for the whole alphabet.

@mrsstuessy that sounds so fun and delicious!

  • I'm SO excited for gymnastics. I hope Gabby has a strong performance. Trials were almost hard to watch at times.

  • We love the Olympics here!  My 8-year-old daughter does gymnastics so we are looking forward to that.  We watched the Nationals and Olympic Trials.  She loves Simone and I love Laurie Hernandez (although, I think we have a great team overall!).  We watch as many events as we can.  Still need to finish watching the opening ceremony but I recorded it!

  • Super excited. Watched a little tennis, swimming, and cycling yesterday, and caught Kerri Walsh's first match late last night. Looking forward to gymnastics and Katie Ludecky tonight.

  • Combining this and symptom thread: Kerri Walsh was 5 weeks pregnant at the London Olympics in 2012. I can barely get off my couch for the exhaustion and nausea, I cannot imagine absolutely killing it in beach volleyball.

  • @catem07 YES. I heard this yesterday and could not believe it. There is no way I could even handle jumping and diving all over the place yet, never mind playing at that level! Even if she didn't know she was pregnant yet...

I agree! It really felt for her during the trials. The commentators were too hard on her, IMO.
  • @akslevin were you watching last night?? IDK where the hell they were finding all of those deductions but Mustafina got a better score for a vault that wasn't any better than some of the others...

I'm sorry I'm a lurker from S15 totally thought I would be joining you guys but despite being late which I never am I got my period. Anyway I hope you don't mind me joining in on olympic talk I love the summer olympics. I didn't get to see much of the gymnastics but the ledecky swim and the phelps mens team swim was so exciting I had trouble falling asleep. My heart was racing from excitement. Oh and the mens fencing where we came in second was very neat to watch and learn i know nothing about fencing lol
  • Please tell me someone else saw the horrific vault incident where the male gymnast broke his leg!! I can't get it out of my head.

  • @Mama5181, YES. I clicked past like three trigger warnings and then almost horked when I watched. I thought I had a strong stomach. Hope he's ok!

  • @Mama5181, I didn't see it when it was live, but saw it on Facebook later. How horrifying!!!! That poor guy!! DH just kept saying "his whole life is ruined from that, his whole career, everything he worked for"
  • Anyone watching the live stream gymnastics team final?

  • Firstly, a big F U to facebook for throwing up all sorts of spoilers before the gymnastics was aired on TV. The swim races gave me anxiety but Phelps beating Le Clos and King beating Efimova made my life.

How about that green murky diving pool...

  • I like to watch it all, but like the swimming the most. But I have to keep my emotions in check. Holy moly either I'm crying or about to have a heart attack. So happy Michael Phelps got his gold back yesterday! :)

  • @predempsey -- Yes! I was watching. The scoring is always so random! It can be really frustrating to watch. And, can the commentators be any more annoying?! The say the same things about each gymnast every.single.time. Yes, we know Simone Biles is the best there ever was or ever will be. For the love.

And I'm with you about FB, too. I had been following Team USA on FB, but I unfollowed yesterday. I'm in Alaska, so we don't see Primetime Olympics until 4 hrs after it airs on the east coast. Lame.

  • @PreDempsey @akslevin this is a really good article about gymnastics coverage on TV

  • @akslevin the commentary is obnoxious, which is surprising. Nastia Liukin used to be on the Olympic team not that long ago so she's not new and knows wtf is up.

@catem07 that was a good article, and I agree, unless you're *into it* into it you have no clue. I had a coworker that was in deep during London and opened my eyes to how crazy the whole year leading up to the Olympics is. I think they could get A LOT of viewership from just what goes on for any sport leading up to the games. Like I want to know what goes into getting a gold medal horse across the world in a plane.

  • @catem07 -- I really enjoyed that article. Thanks for posting it.

@predempsey -- I know, right? She seems to provide *some* meaningful insights, but the repetitive comments got to me.

I seem to have missed the vault and uneven bars final. Hope I catch the beam final tonight!
