One nap?

For about a week now LO has been consistently taking a 2 and 1/2 to 3 hour nap. He usually gets up around 7:30 then takes his long nap around 10:30 or 11. Problem is he no longer wants to take a second nap. He goes down very easy for bedtime, his first nap, and the one time he still wakes up in the middle of the night. But that second nap has become a nightmare. I fought it for almost 2 hours yesterday before I finally gave up. He will look tired but be completely content and happy, playing and acting normal until bedtime. I'm a little concerned that it's stopping him from getting enough sleep since that can at times put him awake from 7 hours before bed. I've been trying to fight it and get him to take that second nap but it's getting to where it's just a lost cause.

anyone else dropped the second nap yet? Any advice? My son is on the bigger side- at his 9 month appointment he was 25lbs, I imagine he's probably around 28lbs by now. Does size matter when it comes to this stuff?

Re: One nap?

  • I think its more developmental than size related.  Usually the second nap is dropped around 15 months or so but there are definitely days when I opt for our one nap schedule instead of our typical 2 naps.  I usually cap DS2's nap to ensure that he has time to be tired enough for two because I prefer that he is not awake for such an extended period of time before bed.

However, today he slept in until 8:15! I decided to keep him up and hope for a 1-3 or 3:30 nap instead.  Most days I put him down around 10:30 or 11 and have to wake him up around 12pm.  That helps him be sleepy enough for another nap 3:30-4:30 (I frequently have to wake him from this one too).  I love an 8-8:30 bedtime and this schedule works best for that.

Though 2 naps is more common at this age, I wouldn't worry too much if LO seems happy and is getting around 12-14 hours of sleep per day.

  • Our naps have been on and off lately.  We were on a pretty set schedule of two naps a day, one from about 9/9:30- 10:30/11:00, and then the second from about 2/2:30-3:30/4:00.  Bedtime is typically between 7-7:10ish.  On GREAT days he was taking two 1.5 hour naps. But, that kind of changed recently and if I get one 1.5 hour nap, then the other was typically shorter about an hour, maybe a little longer.

Just the last few days his naps were WAY off.  He was taking FOREVER to fall asleep...like an hour, and then sleeping weird amounts of time, etc.  Total nap refusal and everything was happening.  I didn't know what was happening, if he's trying to transition, or just messed up because of teething, leaps, etc.  So I just stuck to it and kept putting him down.  Some naps were super short, some were normal, some were a fight.  I REALLY don't want to give up the two naps yet at 10.5 months.

Today he seems to be a little back on track again, we'll see!  I'm hoping he was just going through a funk and it's all figured out again.  I'm really hoping to keep two naps as long as I can!  This morning I did cap his morning nap.  He typically wakes for the day around 6:30, and then I put him down for that first nap at 8ish.  Today I woke him just before 1.5 hours so he wouldn't get too much sleep in that morning nap, and then not take a good nap in the afternoon.  Who knows if it will work.  Can let you know soon...he's currently sleeping for nap two.  HOPE it works!
  • My daughter who usually goes down for naps easily was fighting them for a few days so I thought she we ready to go from her normal 2 naps down to just one more in the middle of the day. I tried it for about a week and she was doing fine but we are back to the 2 naps. I think she just was having an off week. Maybe it's just a phase!
  • I would love it if LO took one long nap. LO usually takes 2 short naps a day one a 11 and the other around 4. They only last 30 minutes though so I don't have much time to do anything.
  • Thanks guys! I'm pretty much indifferent to it either way as it doesn't really affect how I do things or being able to get stuff done- I just want to make sure I'm doing whatever is best for him. I know 15 months is usually the earliest they drop to 1 nap so I don't want to do that too soon if he's not actually ready or if it will cause him issues. I'm gonna continue at least trying to get him down for a second nap for a while.

  • Can you push back the time he goes down for his 2nd nap?  DD was doing this, but she's not ready to drop her morning nap yet. So I've been pushing back the time I put her down at, but still getting her up at the same time so she is ready for her longer afternoon nap.
  • Mine has never been on a huge schedule, and sometimes doesn't nap at all. Other days, it's a 20-40 minute one midmorning, depending on when he wakes, and/or a couple of hours in the afternoon.
  • My LO is down to one nap a day. She was consistently fighting her second nap, and our neighbor who will be watching her only has one nap time (1-3pm). We just slowly put her down later and later. The latest she'll go down now is about 12/12:30. She'll usually nap an hour, sometimes two. She's not fussy at nighttime anymore with one nap, so we feel better about it. If she were we'd still be doing 2 naps. She's STTN still with one nap.
  • My dude is down to one nap a day. It's usually 2-3 hours.
  • Little man still naps about 3 times a day. He occasionally drops the third one. He sleeps 11 hours a night usually and seems to want the naps. I keep wondering if that is okay but when I called yesterday the nurse said if he wants them or needs them let him take it. He will determine if he needs it. So in other words if they don't need it they will drop it. Her only question to me was what time he went down at night and did he sleep through the night. He goes down at 7:39-8:00 and sleeps til 6:30-7:00 so he needs them. Some days he only takes two but I let him decide.
