Am I Crazy? - Camping

So I had planned a camping trip for family/friends in February before I got my BFP the following month. We are going tent camping for Labor Day Weekend; this puts me at 28 weeks (EEK). Have you/Are you planning on camping this far along? If so any tips or recommendations for comfort/safety would be helpful. Not sure what I expect to hear back but will give this a try.

Right now I feel fine and up for it but who knows in a few more weeks....

Re: Am I Crazy? - Camping

  • The only thing that's keeping me from camping right now, at 24 weeks, is money.  The only advice I have is AIR MATTRESS.  Have fun while you have the freedom to do so!

  • Loading the player...
  • Give it a shot! If you feel good, why not? You can always change your mind.
The only advice I would give is to stay hydrated and make sure the bed is comfy... I'm having trouble getting out of bed in the morning, can't imagine doing it on a hard surface.
  • I can't imagine anything more miserable, honestly but I would have said the same thing pregnant or not... I am not a camper. But I do agree with PP, if you like that kind of thing and feel good then go for it!
  • Only reason I haven't pushed to go is peeing at night (and all the time in general).  Otherwise I say go for it!

  • My Obgyn said its fine but bring plenty of fluids and electrolyte drinks because dehydration can cause early labor.

persobally I would bring a air mattress or comfy cot to sleep on abd plenty of pillows

I camped a few weeks ago at around 22 weeks and was fine with a good sleeping pad, extra blanket, and real pillow. I would do it again further along (though we probably won't have time to), but I second @UTAmbs11 with making sure you aren't far from a bathroom (or have a plan/buddy for getting to one farther away).

Hydration/food is also key. I found it was easy to forget to drink/eat enough when I was hiking, etc and my body let me know it. So have plenty of quick snacks and large water bottles/bladders and electrolyte tabs for the water if you really crash. I like Nuun brand for those.
  • I'm 27 weeks tomorrow and I just returned home from a mom/kid Campout today.

It was great! I even had an extra kid because her sister got sick and she didn't want to miss the fun. I actually forgot I was pregnant many times, but only because I was busy and having fun!

An air mattress is definitely key (be sure to air it up again right before bed!) as is lots of yummy drink and snack options because there is something that feels so wrong about camping without a beer, so your favorite treats are a lousy second.

I also had a package of baby wipes and a designated pee area for middle of the nights trips to the bathroom. I'd probably have trekked it to the actual bathrooms, but I didn't want to leave my kids alone in the tent at night where I couldn't hear them.

I also borrowed the sound machine we have for baby and used it and it was awesome! My daughter didn't wake up until 7:45 today, which is a huge success when the rest of the campsite (freaking loud birds included!) wakes up at 6:30.

  • I went few weeks ago and had a great time. Go for it! The air mattress made all the difference.
  • I went camping and hunting when pregnant with DD. I was 32 weeks. We brought a thin mattress (like from a camper bunk) for me to sleep on. Other Han that, I didn't have any issues and had a blast.

  • Thank you all. @MrsBigTime I have to look at the site again and see how far the restrooms are... If not I'll figure out a system because I wake up about 2x at night. @shevaCC The air mattress will probably be a must I've only just used a thin sleeping pad in the past but not this time. I will be taking my pillows regardless, I don't see how I can get through the night without them... Ahh I didn't even think about not drinking lol... So I will load up on the snacks and my delicious watermelon drink

  • We just got home from camping a week ago, I was 23 weeks with twins and measured 34 weeks the day before we left. It really wasn't bad at all. We slept on an air mattress and I didn't wake up once to pee. I have no idea how. But my plan was just to squat outside the tent if I had to because we were so far from the bathrooms.
    I say do it!

  • I've gone twice now, after not doing it for years. No big deal. Sleeping on my side on a cot is a bit uncomfortable, other than that I had no complaints. I had to get up once a night to pee, but that's normal for me pre-pregnancy. I did have a bout of returned MS one morning so bringing some emergency soda/whatever your remedy is isn't a bad idea. I still take Unisom nightly and probably would've had difficulty sleeping without it, but it knocks me out pretty good, camping or no. Lots of snacks and water, like others said.
